SUMMARY
A summary is a shortened version of the original. The main purpose of such a simplification is to highlight the major points from the original (much longer) subject, e.g. a text, a film or an event. The target is to help the audience get the gist in a short period of time. A written summary starts with a lead, including title, author, text type and the main idea of the text. It has a clearly arranged structure and is written in a logical, chronological and traceable manner. In contrast to a résumé or a review, a summary contains neither interpretation nor rating. Only the opinion of the original writer is reflected – paraphrased with new words without quotations from the text.

How to write a summary • Read the text • Formulate the main statement • Reread the text and underline important ideas and arguments according to the main statement • Introduce the author and title of the work in the opening sentence • Mention the important facts in chronological order
Check that your summary reflects the original conclusion

| + | - |
|* consistency |* too many details |
|* laconic brevity |* precise quotations from the text |
|* accuracy |* reflection of personal ideas |
|0. Introductory phrase |The article I am going to summarize |
| |I’d like to summarize

Nevertheless, he smashes repeatedly passing the gun right through the specter. With each bashing strike, Matt is letting out a painful plea. “Are you crazy?” Matt screams. “You’re hitting me,” Burroughs surprised by the screams immediately stops when a deep voice erupts demanding them to “Go,” With that command, the troublesome hand vanishes beneath the Earth! Pulling from the hole, rubbing his leg from the apparition’s grip, astonished by what is taking place. “I made physical contact with an apparition, a specter from the other side.” He says fascinated by the incident, “This is unbelievable.” He yells wondering how they are we supposed to fight the Devil with tricks like that. Really, it is not even October.” Burroughs adds enlightening the strange albino. “Every day is Halloween.” Matt’s replies, “Every day the devil gets his due and they have a name for it, All Saints Day; All Hallows Eve, or All Souls Day, a Festival to honor the Samhain, the Lord of Death. How To Write A Summary Of Tyson Chicken Factory By Francisco

...Jorge could have been down in his back, and a higher pay. And again, the reader may still wonder why he wrote the article. He was in a new, unfamiliar, surrounding with strangers for coworkers. He seemed to write the article as a journal entry about his new, completely different job several states away from the textile factory he was previously used to working in. Like Jorge, people may leave their jobs with good positions like working in a field to harvest fruits and vegetables, was the lugging heavy boxes of the produce, or in his case, bending over a sewing-like machine almost al day at work. Although it was a chicken factory that probably stunk, it might have had better benefits, or made him able to travel and move somewhere...

How To Write A Short Summary Of David Hydon Settlement At Jamestown

...The spring of 1623 found the ship Jonathon and it’s very few passengers landing 50 miles north of the present day Boston. This handful of men, under the leadership of David Thompson, had come to the New World to earn money for a group of men in England known as the Plymouth Council. They were to evaporate sea water to obtain salt to preserve the fish they caught, they were also to cut timber. These products were to be shipped to England and sold. If the endeavor prospered the settlement would continue if not then it would certainly be abandoned. These men settled near the mouth of a river they called ‘Piscataqua’, a Native American name, and they named their settlement ‘Pannaway’. They quickly built rudimentary huts covered with bark, turf, and clay, so that they could begin their employment sooner. Soon the Hilton brothers, London Fish merchants, were sent by Captain John Mason of the Plymouth Council with grants of all the land in the Piscataqua Region. Mason called these grants ‘New Hampshire’ because he was from the county of Hampshire in England. The Hiltons pushed about eight miles up the Piscataqua River and founded Dover. Mason sent skilled Danes and 22 women so that the settlement would begin to flourish. In 1631 the Hiltons founded a second settlement approximately three miles north of Pannaway. The meadows along the river were lush strawberries, which prompted them to name it ‘Strawberry Bank’. Dover and Strawberry Bank grew slowly. Everything was provided...

Why Write an Executive Summary

...How to Write an Executive Summary: Why Write It? Investors, lenders, executives, managers and CEOs are busy. Always. That means that the executive summary is an essential gateway for your business plan to get read. Think about it this way: if you had an endless list of things to do, and someone handed you an 80-page document and said "read this! you'd probably first want to know why. "The most important reason to include an executive summary is that in many cases, it is the only thing the reader will read," says Pablo Bonjour, founder & CEO of Katy, Texas-based SMG Business Plans, a company that offers entrepreneurs assistance in writing business plans. According to Bonjour, investors will read the executive summary to decide if they will even bother reading the rest of the business plan. It's rare for an investor or lender to read an entire business plan, at least in the initial stages of analysis and consideration for funding, so having a strong executive summary is key. When you're writing your business plan, your goal is to get your foot in the door and face-time with the investor. "Assuming that your business is a good fit for the investor, a strong executive summary will get you invited in for a meeting," Hirai says. "A poor executive summary will leave you standing in the cold." Burroway Chapter Summaries

...Burroway’s ideas on Summary and Scene are certainly helpful, but as I was reading the chapter, I was hoping that it would bring up Exposition and explain how it differs from Summary. I wanted to know the difference between the two because I’m worried that I might accidentally write Exposition when I’m trying to write Summary. While I couldn’t find an exact answer in the text, I did find one by making a few inferences. I think Exposition is a specific type of Summery, particularly when the story is simply telling the information, regardless of whether it’s from a long period of time or a short one. In other words, it is what Burroway calls “a general, perfunctory summary” (195). Therefore, if I want to write a good summary, I should make...

English

...Summary In order to write a good summary of a text you have to keep the following 8 points in mind: 1 You are supposed to write a coherent text including only the main points or events and showing that you have grasped the essence of the text. Your summary should not include examples, details, lists, direct speech or elaborate descriptions. You should cover only the questions of who, where, when and what, whereas questions of how and why belong to analysis and interpretation (the essay). 2 Use the most economical wording possible, and remember that the most important requirements of the genre are brevity, precision and concentration. Do not exeed the word limit - you will be punished for doing so! But neither should you write too short a summary as this will put you in danger of leaving out essential points. 3 Your reader is not familiar with the text. Therefore you need to be explicit and introduce characters, situations, subjects, backgrounds etc. No in medias res openings: you have to write an introductory passage (as well as a closing one). Always remember: your summary has to make sense on its own. 4 A summary must be loyal to the text and as objective as possible. You are not allowed to state your own points or personal views here. Only your own ordering of the material - chronology is no necessity! - and your statement of what the text is about are allowed. Analysis and interpreta-tion should be given only in the essay. 5 Use your own language. Take care...
