Introduction Hard Rock Cafe Bengaluru is a part of worldwide franchise that spans from America till Australia with 168 venues with some being just cafes then the rest having a combination of hotel, casino and restaurant. The first hard rock was opened in 1971 which was in London and then spanned the rest of the world after the year 1982 and jumped to different continents. The branch in Bengaluru is a restaurant / bar, which is based on a corporate theme which is a rock vintage appeal. The restaurant /bar are located on MG road in the book society building. The book society is one of the oldest buildings in Bengaluru. Hard rock cafe opened on estimated 29th December 2007. With its rock n roll theme the restaurant chose a building that would represent its ideals as a franchise and bring the look. Their main element of the restaurant / bar would be its memorabilia of rock legends displayed all over the area. As quoted by the hard rock website “Today, Hard Rock International, with Hard Rock Cafe at its core, is an entertainment and leisure company that continues to successfully expand the Hard Rock Brand through myriad music-related ventures, breath-taking properties, collectible fashions, and a great rock 'n' roll attitude.” The architect of Hard rock cafe Bengaluru are Khosala associates and the interior designer is Final Joshi, with their fine combination they created such an iconic restaurant of Bengaluru. Due to new technology hard rock cafe is one of the few restaurants in Bengaluru that have television screens on each table cover in the restaurant, displaying the video of the songs playing in the background making the customer feel a part of the ambience and keeping them entertained while their order is being prepared. In this report the focus shall be on the restaurant side of hard rock cafe, reviewing the aspects of objectives, principles, elements lighting, colour and feedback about the overall setup, design and concept. Elements: 1) Line: There are many types of lines and the way they are used can vary, whether it aids the room in giving it structure and aesthetic appeal and functionality also counts. Due to the obvious structure of the building both vertical and horizontal lines are used. Between each hall or section of the restaurant there are arches on the top indicating vertically how the structure and also involves the use of curved lines ( as shown on the right). The entrances are narrow with the usage of vertical lines and less spacing between them indicating height again. The use of diagonal lines are shown by the wallpaper used on the opposite wall the designs are diamond shaped and placed in straight vertical manner but in a diamond shaped design the broader look would be more of diagonal design because of the tip edge, as shown by the picture on the right. This design also helps in making the room look broader than taller in a restaurant that helps a lot because the guest will also feel that there is room for everyone and contributes to the deception of width being present although it is there, the design aid in making more prominent. The brick walls have forms of lines (both vertical and horizontal) forming a rectangular shape and in a larger sense a base and a structure. 2) Form: As for form the picture frames show a 2D effect but the illuminated signage because it is a form of a cuboids form it is considered as 3D view with a 360 degree view. As for the entrances the tall arch ways give a 2D effect as you can make the double side and cannot see the other side at one glance. In the case of the glass box frames showing rock star memorabilia such as guitars, jackets, caps are put up also give 2D. In a broader aspect are a product of a form as a chair , table they all 3D form as they serve a function the way the pictures and the Illuminated signage is highlighting the picture or item on display and the glass helps in providing the 2D or 3D effect. 3) Texture: The restaurant plays with a lot of textures, from the walls to the furniture; there is a whole exciting choice which help in making the rock vintage theme of the restaurant come alive. From the walls they mainly use the brick look which the original structure bit of the building which in tactile sense looks rough giving an rough, edgy, hard look to the restaurant again sticking to the theme and on the other hand of the wall it is just smooth cemented the same grey colour of the bricks making look smooth even out and plays around with the theme. To the give the restaurant the vintage aspect is the wall paper the burlesque design of the flower or curls designs but in a bold but not very striking red because the emphasis is on the Illuminated advertising signage with acrylic finish but while being seated in the restaurant your attention does go towards theanaglyptic wall paper , in a tactile sense it looks soft and actually it is just that there are 2 fibres used one is plain cloth kind of a background and the design is in velvet feel giving an emboss look to the design and making it stand out. For the furniture the use wooden furniture as table tops and chairs, but sofa are made out of Rexene. The flooring is smooth but not as smooth as silk as it a smooth cemented floor and it is easy to maintain. 4) Colour: Due to the power of sunlight the human eye is able to see colour, so colour and lighting do go hand in hand especially to differentiate shades, tones , tints and hues etc. In the case of the hard rock cafes restaurant they play with many neutral colours along with contrasting bright colours just to stand out such as reds, pinks, oranges to strike the customers eye. The muted theme of colours is used to give an old vintage medieval look to the restaurant. 5) Pattern : In the restaurant case would apply to the wall paper used as previously mentioned in texture it has design aspect that follows a pattern as it is abstract but geometrical at the same time, besides the wall paper every other aspect that could have pattern it is plain. The upholstery is plain and so is the wooden furniture. 6) Lighting : A very important in any establishment not does it help in visibility for the eye it also aids in highlighting colours and visibly seeing them, by light you can determine hue , shades, tints and neutral colours . This helps in restaurant it important factor of a restaurant because it is basically categorised as a artificial lights and natural, in the case of hard rock cafe they play with both as they have large windows that allow natural light to seep in, at the same time there is an opened area that allows light and ventilation as there is smoking area at the back of the bar. In the case of the restaurant the large windows contribute to all the natural lighting during the afternoon till early evening (as their timing is from 12am – 11pm) and they do use neon coloured lightning for some of their posters or their main highlights. In the case of the night they use drop down lighting to highlight their displayed merchandise. The use neon coloured lights to highlight the emphasis of the restaurant and make the customers attention get drawn towards it. Generally the use of warm lighting more makes a welcoming feeling for the guest, which is used in hard rock cafe restaurant. 7) Space: An extremely important aspect of interior designing as it determines how the space is defined and has been utilised. The restaurant has equal space as to the lounge bar area, the usage of space has been optimised by using booth sofas which serves as seating and takes up less space for a comfortable seat. There is combination of wooden seat which are 15 covers in total and side stations as cabinets where touch screen monitors are place for billing these are place in between the wall partitioning, up against the wall keeping area for the people present. The area has been sectioned as the each table cover at the corners has their own space to move and table covers near the windows have a view of the main road. Neat lines or areas of gangways are made so there is space for the guest to pull out his seat without touching the other customers chair and area for mobility.
Principles of design: 1) Proportion: Referred to the law the relationship, the relationship of size, shape, colour, light texture with the relation of space. In the case of the restaurant; the light, colours played along with each other very well and blended as one. As each individual point will be discussed in details further on in this report. 2) The balance is Formal / symmetrical balance and it is radial balance as you enter the centre of focus would go towards the large scale Illuminated advertising signage with acrylic finish showing a 3D view of various artists ( as shown in figure 1). Then the table covers are arranged around the posters where they get to view one side of the Illuminated advertising signage with acrylic finish. 3) The emphasis is on the Illuminated advertising signage with acrylic finish as it is placed at the center of the room and has a bright coloured lighting that comes out from the bottom of the Illuminated advertising signage with acrylic finish and the bright pink and beige – white background of the pictures contrasts the rooms set colour theme. As for scale besides the center of focus (illuminated signage) the rest of furniture is at the same height and spaced evenly. The use of uneven shapes and contrasting colours has aided in making the Illuminated advertising signage with acrylic finish the center of emphasis of the restaurant and the anaglyptic wallpaper as well. 4) Scale: An important factor to proportion, to ability to have proportion to be able to arrange items should have the skill to identify scale it gives evenness to the design, it helps in space management, it determines how items should be placed as well as furniture and it will use up the space and show the area is evenly proportioned. In the case of hard rock; due to the radial balance the Illuminated advertising signage with acrylic finish acts as centre to the scale like a pyramid and the rest of furniture around it is of the same size and height order showing that the room has a good relationship between the elements and the structure. In case of the displays on the wall they also compliment the scale of the structure as they are placed in an order as small to big pictures or other way around giving an balance a pleasing scale to the area. As for the wall partitioning the arches spacing is equal and therefore an equal scale giving an equal proportion to the room. 5) Rhythm: it refers to underlying unity of variety; to have a successful rhythm this unity should be achieved. In the case there is a repetition of shapes as the furniture around the Illuminated signage are of the same shape so therefore there is progression of rhythm and in the case of the pictures and memorabilia displayed are placed in a small to big size frames or the other way around but this indicates a progression in sizes and this maintains the rhythm in the restaurant. In the case of the walls the lines are moving towards one direction (vertically) and that is why there is a continuous line movement showing a good rhythm in the restaurant. 6) Harmony: A fundamental requirement in interior design as its shows that the establishment blends all the factors collide and become one, creating a theme an ambience that is best suited. It takes in factors such as line and shape, size, colour, texture, ideas and colours. In the case of harmony of line of shape because there us a base structure and they have used that as their design there is an presence of repetitive lines both vertical and horizontal, in the brick design there are contrasting lines that outline the shape and lines that contrasts one another . In the case of transitional lines are always because they modify the design making it more agreeable and keeping a balance of scale, proportion and harmony. IN the case of harmony of size the usage of big objects has always been balanced with a smaller object or an object of an equal size which is clearly shown in the case of the picture frames and other rock memorabilia. Colours are in harmony because of the neutral colours used and the use of contrast colours are balanced out because there is a repetition of these contrasting colours at the rest of the cafe. Harmony of ideas taking the whole scheme of things in mind and the theme of the restaurant the ideas do not clash due to the fact its main purpose is music and everything iconic items to TV screens showing videos of songs play into the whole idea of the restaurant. As for the furniture the sizes are even and the colours play into the theme of the cafe there a proper harmony resulting in a very well designed (interior) restaurant.
Colour and colour schemes Night Time
As colour is completely dependent on the reflection of light on the surface, in this scenario colour is one factor that has been dissected in this restaurant. Due to the fact there isn’t a specific colour scheme or one specific colour used. The factors below are deciding factors on what colours are seen at the restaurant: * Time of day * Textures * Lighting Day Time
Due to these factors the colours in the restaurant change by a tone or shade, asan interior designer would design a space based on the natural lighting, and during the day the direct sun light is reflected through the windows. Due to the usage of many colours, a specific colour scheme tag would not be appropriate to use for this restaurant. As the walls are split into three main textures that is the stone wall playing to the character of the building which is grey and the background is black, the embossed wall paper which plays with two colours giving it an embossed look and due to the sun light the intensity of the red hue is brighter, the natural light plays the same effect on the smooth cemented wall as the intensity is brighter due to sun light and in the evening it turns duller due to artificial light not being directly pointed at the surface. In the evening the illuminated signage projects several colours from hues of orange, pink, beige it plays with colour scheme of the restaurant, the rest of the artificial lighting is not directly facing structural parts of the room; in the sense that they are more focused on the memorabilia and the only exception being the spotlight facing the ceiling emphasising the height of the room giving the restaurant a warm and cosy feeling basically the indirect lighting is not straining on the eyes and the colours blend with one another except for the signage as it is the focal point.
Lighting An important factor to my hotel as it influenced other factors in this report; lighting is divided into two main categories: * Natural lighting * Artificial lighting In the case natural lighting, the bright radiant energy of the sun is reflected through the windows giving the room a brighter appeal and highlighting colours of the room. The usage of blinds on the window tones down the brightness of the day light especially during lunch time as that would leave a strain on the customer’s eye. Artificial light is a major factor in the restaurant as they play with the overall scheme of the restaurant. They use incandescent lights due to the intense power it gives off and also the fact that the area has a combination use of direct and indirect lighting that is reflected of the ceiling to light up the rest of the room they are a few spot lights that face directly towards the floor, this helps in less strain over the table cover. The different fixtures they use to highlight the place are: * Focus on tracks: is mainly used to highlight the posters and musical instruments displayed on the wall also a few of them are reflected of the ceiling surface to give indirect lighting and to emphasize on height. * Individual Halogen lights: majorly used on larger memorabilia or reflected of the walls or ceiling both of these light fixtures. In the case for the illuminated signage with an acrylic finish, is the centre of focus it is the only source of diffused lighting in the room and due to the choice of vibrant colours it stands out along with the pictures of iconic singers. It goes along with the theme of music in the restaurant but due to the colours it contradicts the idea the restaurant could have a theme. As the colours that keep changing gives the room a different shades or tones when these lights are reflected off the surface. Hard rock Cafe not only a restaurant the colours given off by the signage gives a lounge ambience making a trendy appeal to suit the customer profile, as they would be targeting a young working crowd the elements of old and new are also shown by the lighting by the traditional spot light with the vibrant colours from the signage completing the blend.
Wall and floor covering The walls and the floor of a structure are crucial, the way it’s covered it determines the appearance of the restaurant. In the case of hard rock cafe the floor was smooth cemented floor, it plays in character with structure of the building being an old building and to the vintage rock theme of the place. The floor in the tactile sense looks rough but its smooth because it is easier to walk so therefore its smoothened concrete, the fact that the floor is non – resilient making more durable and dies not damage easily by moisture or grease and also resistant to heat , cracking , scratching, indentations Keeping the floor plain it keeps the focus on the walls and the smooth cemented floor is easier to maintain since there is a constant flow of people moving plus the spillage of food items and beverage items makes it easier to handle. The wall covering can define a look of the room, from the size till the colour. As hard rock plays with textures specifically on the walls as a part of the character of the structure of the building the stone covered walls at the entrance of the restaurant and the portioning of the area are part of the buildings original structure before it got renovated. As the stone covered wall is a part of the structure it is easy to maintain. As for the Smooth cemented wall plays along with floor giving the room a consistency with the theme of the room, again it is easy to maintain as it is resistant to many external factors such as heat or insects etc.. As for the damask wallpaper that plays with colour of the hard rock logo and also gives into the rock n roll theme. Due to the fact the wallpaper has cloth fibres it harder to maintain as it is open catch dust first and stain are more likely to damaging maintenance is crucial.
Furniture and Furniture arrangement The furniture used is wooden chairs and wooden counter top table with a metal base supporting it, along withRexene covered sofa. The wood used is teak, which was used on both the counter and the chair, the size of the table was 90 by 90 cm as for the sofa it was 125 by 85cm. The case of the sofa it’s playing along with signage making a functional accessory and helps in maximum usage of space as the sofas are attached to the base of the signage. the restaurant has not used a lot of types of furnishing and furniture stuck the primal basics to keep the attention on the walls rather than the furniture as the element of the restaurant is what they have to display and also following international design as it is an international franchise and representing its brand name in India at Bangalore. Furniture arrangement in hard rock cafe restaurant follows a radial balance as the lighted signage plays as the centre of focus as previously explained so therefore the table covers are of even height an spread out in an even order, as there should be space for movement, which they have done for both staff and customers. Beside the table cover there is a cabinet for staff to keep a computer for billing on the intervals of the arched walls; as mentioned by the layout. These were made out of rosewood and had two doors with a table space for the screen. As for soft furnishing present at the hard rock cafe there are roller blinds as they want customers to enjoy the view of the main road but at the same if asked for they get complete privacy if required. These blinds are made out of thin sheet of steel and it has two handles one is to rotate the blinds from allowing full light to pass through or shut it out and the other is to pull up the blinds giving full view of the window.
Windows and Window treatment In the case of this restaurant as it is an old structure and the owners of this building wanted to retain the authenticity of the old structure the windows are large and give an antique look to the restaurant, they are split into 2 parts one is the gable and the bottom is a full length window this allow in more natural light and emphasises on the height of the place. The windows main functionality is for the view and the passing of natural light throughout the area as it cannot open to provide ventilation. It does provide a view of one of the busiest streets of Bangalore that is MG road; therefore the windows in hard rock cafe restaurant are called fixed windows. The windows are the same length as the main entrance door, which give a larger view and more light into the room. The soft furnishing used are venetian blinds which helps customers to avoid the afternoon glare. Accessories As in every restaurant accessories are categorised on the basis of functional and decorative, in the case of this restaurant the accessories are vital they part as it plays into the theme of the restaurant and they are mainly decorative. Functional accessory: the only exception is the illuminated signage as it has sofa connected to the base of the structure where customers can sit and it takes up less space in the restaurant reducing the amount of chairs that could have been used. Decorative accessories: many types’ displays are present in this restaurant mainly genuinely autographed items or items owned by celebrity bands or singers, band posters, musical instruments, clothing items etc. All these items are used for a decorative purpose and play the part of the theme. They have highlighted the memorabilia by the spot lights which are a source of indirect lighting in the restaurant indicating how important these displays are, as they play as an element of the restaurant, making the walls the area of focus as they are valuable artefacts for fans that come just to see them. Suggestions and recommendations Although they did do their best in space utilisation, in my opinion the table covers are too close to one another at least in the main area where the signage is present especially while entering the area as one person could bump into another while pulling out their chair while leaving because the other partitioned area there more space to move around and also there less privacy between tables. Basically, for the flow of the staff its quiet congested although the route to the kitchen is quiet straight forward during a rush hour it’s a bit of a pickle to move around. I think to play with the theme of the restaurant being vintage and antique putting curtains would have brought in more of an appeal. Even carpeted floors would have been more conventional for a restaurant like hard rock cafe and contributed to the theme plus protecting the cemented floor or prolong its life line from crake or dents etc, nevertheless I can understand the reason behind the cemented flooring on the basis of maintenance. The usage of chair stoppers would help in making less noise while pulling or pushing in the chair while sitting as the noise can be quiet disturbing to the other customers. Giving chairs with cushions would help customers who don’t get the sofa seats have a more comfortable experience while eating. The lighting could have been more brighter as it felt to dull and most of the lighting was indirect giving the area a very dull appeal, instead of indirect lighting usage of brighter and direct lighting on the table covers. Although the memorabilia was noticed effectively the red wallpaper was not as it was taken over by too many factors such as the illuminated signage and the TV. Screens.
Conclusion The Hard Rock cafe Bangalore is a part of a franchise company hard rock cafe, honouring their standards and adhering to their style but making this branch with a personal touch, gives the restaurant a feeling that it belongs to the city and it is a very approachable place, it caters to all the music fans in Bangalore and brings people together. There is always something to wonder at and the genuine articles are worth looking out for. The illuminated signage highlights the room extremely well and by placing the righteous icons of music makes everyone relate one of those artists up on those walls. The lighting for highlighting the memorabilia was placed at effective areas and were not cluttering unlike the seating arrangements at least in the main area as you enter on a less crowded day the restaurant has a very neat and efficient layout but the true test that is on a weekend shows that they could less table covers. The restaurant is designed extremely well, considering that the building was an old structure they used it to their advantage and made the best out of it, the structural attributes were cleverly highlighted and the vintage feel brought by the decorations can make a customer feel that rock stars are found here.
