...Assignment 1: Applications of Epidemiology-Case Study HSA 535 Dr. Mountasser Kadrie Strayer University April, 2014 Introduction Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacteria usually found in warm blooded organisms such as human and animal intestines. Although there are large groups of E.coli, most strains are harmless. Other strains of the bacteria may cause diarrhea, respiratory illnesses and food poisoning. Some strains such as O157:H7 can cause kidney failure or severe anemia. Exposure to E.coli can be in the form of food, water, undercooked meat and even raw vegetables. Symptoms may include: nausea and vomiting, severe stomach cramps and stomach tenderness, diarrhea containing blood. In hospitals and other health care facilities, E. coli is commonly found in meat served in the cafeteria. In a (2014) article of Science Daily, It’s reported that more than 80 percent of raw chicken used in hospitals in food for patients and staff was contaminated with a form of antibiotic resistant bacteria called extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing E. coli. While sufficient preparation eliminated the presence of bacteria, poultry meat delivered to hospital kitchens remains a potential point of entry for these dangerous bacteria into the hospital. The study was published in the April issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. Analyze Good Health Hospital’s Records Good Health Hospital,...

...Infectious Disease Case Study HSA535 01/20/2012 Identify the transmission and symptoms of the flu, treatments that are currently available, and how your organization can help mitigate the spread of this disease. In preparing a report for leadership; I want to inform them on the symptoms and transmission of the flu. Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often fee some or all these symptoms: fever or feeling feverish/chills( please note that not everyone that have the flu will have a fever) Cough Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Muscle or body aches Fatigue(tiredness) Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea( though this is more common in children than adults) Most people who get influenza will recover in a few days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications (such as pneumonia) as a result of the flu, some of which can be life-threatening and result in death. The flu is transmitted: Person to Person People with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Less...

Plan: Contact Department of Environmental Protection to see what type of mold we are dealing with. I need to estimate how many people are involved How many personal house and commercial building. Assess how many people will need medical attention, so I will know how many medical staff to have available. Once I have all those things in place; I can give my opinion and what type of action need to be taken to prevent as many people as I can from health injuries pertaining to mold. Propose three types of molds that could develop from flood damage and the associated health risks with each type of mold. Different types of mold - black mold, toxic mold, allergenic mold - are present all the time around us and in the air we breathe. In low levels, molds and mold spores are generally harmless but if their levels increase they can affect people; especially people with allergies, asthma and respiratory conditions or suppressed immune system. Allergenic mold and mold spores are normally not dangerous to humans in low amounts, but they cause allergic or asthmatic symptoms. Generally, these types of mold can be relatively easy and safely cleaned...

...Assignment 2 Morbidity: Lung Cancer HSA535 Managerial Epidemiology 01/29/2012 Compose an analysis of lung cancer of lung cancer as compared to other leading causes of death in your state. Include the mortality rates and the costs of lung cancer(for the most recent year reported) in your analysis. Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lung. Normal lung tissue is made up of cells that are programmed by genes to create lung tissue in a certain shape and to perform certain functions. Lung cancer develops when the genetic material responsible for production of lung cells is damaged (genetic mutations). Repeated exposure to carcinogens such as tobacco smoke may cause damage in lung cells. While tobacco, is the leading cause of lung cancer, some other carcinogens linked to lung cancer include radon and asbestos. These mutations in the genetic material of the lung cells cause the instructions for those cells to go askew. Consequently, those cells and their offspring reproduce wildly, without regard for the normal shape and function of a lung. That wild reproduction causes the formation of tumors that block air passages in the lung and make it stop functioning as it should. Lung cancer is usually divided into two major types. The first type is small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The second type is non-small cell lung cancer NSCLC. Sometimes a lung cancer may have characteristics of both types. This is called mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma. About...

The medical professionals and all members of staff are always committed to ensuring delivery of quality services to patients. The hospital has had a good reputation of excellent staff, good patient relations and top quality services. In the recent past, several cases of E. coli have been reported at Good Health Hospital. E. coli exists in a variety of types but most varieties a less harmful to human health. Research by medical professionals has shown that E. coli bacteria live in the intestines, for both people and animals. Symptoms of E. coli infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain and vomiting (Bennett, Jarvis & Brachman, 2007). E. coli emanates from taking contaminated food and water. E. coli may lead to death or permanent health problems if appropriate measures are taken on time. Nosocomial diseases can be termed as an infection that a person gets while being attend to in a health institution. ...Assignment 1: Applications of Epidemiology – A Case Study Landon Hazel Dr. Cynthia Davis HSA 535 October 22, 2014 Introduction The Good Health hospital has a minor 6 person nosocomial infection of E. coli. The role of the social science researcher is to investigate dissimilar patterns and causes of the E. coli and its bearing on the patients. The science researcher also understands that litigation issues are also in question because the hospitals are anticipated to safely inhibit the spread of any diseases from patient to patient. In many cases Good Hospital could be held liable for negligence. By contacting the DOH and CDC for data related to nosocomial diseases, the researcher can gain valuable information about different ways to contain the spread. After the data is gathered, the researcher can effectively prepare an evaluation report. This report will include information in detail about nosocomial infections as well as considerations for Good Hospital to handle the problem effectively. Analyze Good Health Hospital’s records and itemize recent nosocomial infections that occurred within the past year. In your report, categorize the different parameters (i.e., person, time, place, ethnicity, and gender) used in the compilation of data into the information summative. In an evaluation of the information that we do recognize about Good Health Hospital is that the outbreak of E. coli was triggered in fact by spoil food from the cafeteria. The E. coli outbreak has...
