...1. The medical treatment of chronic disease accounts for the majority of health care spending in the U.S. Identify and discuss three ways we could potentially reduce spending on chronic diseases while improving health status. Chronic diseases account for 75% of the nation’s health care spending. Chronic conditions are expected to last a year or more, bestow limits upon the patient’s, and may require ongoing care. They are significant and presently a growing challenge in the U.S. health care system. People with chronic conditions have significantly higher health care costs. It is expected that by 2020, U.S. will spend $685 billion annually on chronic diseases medical costs. By 2015 nursing homes and home health care costs will double to $320 million. There are five conditions accounted for one half of the increases of health care spending. They include: heart disease, pulmonary disease, mental disease, cancer, and hypertension. Alzheimer’s and Diabetes will soon past these as the most common chronic diseases. Health literacy is a way we could potentially reduce spending on chronic disease while improving health status. Health literacy is defined in the National Library of Medicine as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services necessary to make appropriate health decisions”. Examples of understanding basic health information would be the ability to understand instructions on prescription drug bottles...

...food, treatment if they are sick, and outside time. Many people buy animals because they are cute and then abandon, or dispose, of them because they are too much work or money. Also when purchasing a pet, many fail to consider if the animal’s personality matches with their lifestyle. Sometimes buyers have “unrealistic expectations about an animal's needs and how that animal would fit into day to day life” (One At A Time). Animals are not disposable, so if a buyer is not up to the challenge of taking care of a pet, they do not need to purchase one. One of the largest problems and causes of animal homelessness is pet owners failing to spay or neuter their pets. “In the United States, 2,000 to 3,000 puppies and kittens are born every hour” (HSCI - General Tip). By spaying and neutering, people can “prevent the problem before it begins” (10 Ways To Decrease). Because of the large population of homeless animals, and their ability to reproduce so rapidly, spaying and neutering helps slow the growth rate of animal homelessness. Many people believe spaying and neutering animals is dangerous to their health, but if the treatment is done at a certain age it is considered safe to spay or neuter your pet. If people don’t begin to prevent unwanted animal births, the animal homelessness population will continue to soar, leaving many animals lives at risk. Though animal homelessness can seem hopeless, there are solutions. The continuation of puppy mills and breeders in the U.S. causes...

...Patrick Sullivan HSCI 331 Journal Critique The Potential for Glycemic Control Monitoring and Screening for diabetes at Dental Visits Using Oral Blood: By: Shiela M. Strauss, Mary T. Rosedale, Michael A. Pesce, David M. Rindskopf, Navjot Kaur, Caroline M. Juterbock, Mark S. Wolff, Dolores Malaspina, and Ann Danoff Vol. 105, No. 4, pp. 796-801. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2014.302357 Diabetes has become a major problem in the United States. More and more Americans are affected each day because simple healthy lifestyle routines are not met. There are many undiagnosed Americans who do not know that they have or are susceptible to diabetes due to family history of the disease or their very own dietary disorientation. Glycemic control, a way to monitor blood sugar through diet and blood source, has proven to help people with diabetes and those who are pre-diabetic. The major public health issue which this research concerns is how to get early diagnosis and treatment through a more primary intervention for those who already have or are susceptible to diabetes. The study is important because Type 2 diabetes and other forms of the disease are preventable. Patients can only be helped if they are diagnosed, understand susceptibility, and are aware of the health problem. There is a known fact that most patients visit their dental provider more often than a primary care provider (PCP), some reasons being that dental visits are inexpensive and less invasive. The objective...

...EXCESSIVE DRINKING: A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE Health and wellbeing of an individual in a community are determined by various factors such as psychological, social and biological (Coreil, 2009). An individual’s state of health is dependent on lifestyle choices and behaviour patterns, this has necessitated the need for various Government health promotion initiatives aimed at empowering individuals to embrace a healthy lifestyle, (The World Health Organisation,1986). In a bid to effectively implement the various health promotion initiative, nurses have been acknowledged to be in key position to drive this awareness. This assignment will discuss the value of health promotion with regards to the treatment of alcohol dependence as a result of depression within the framework of a bio-psychosocial model (BPS), Government policy on reducing harmful drinking, cognitive behaviour therapy and the role of the student nurses in public health promotion and dissemination of healthy lifestyle information. This assignment will be based on my practice placement experience on the trauma and orthopaedic ward. The name of patient and locality has been omitted in accordance with the confidentiality guideline of the Nursing and Midwifery Council code of conduct (2008). Tomline was admitted into the trauma and orthopaedic ward as a result of injury sustained in a car accident after excessive consumption of alcohol. ...41 Asia-Pacific Business Review Vol. VI, No. 2, April - June 2010 pp. 41-49, ISSN: 0973-2470 Capital Structure and Product Market Determinants: Empirical Evidence from the Indian Automobile Industry Himanshu Joshi This paper provides insights into the way in which the capital structure is determined by product market determinants, research and development activity and profitability. This paper is an attempt to test relevance of empirical evidences found in matured markets to the Indian market condition. Automobile industry is taken up for the study because of its oligopoly nature and easy availability of product prices. Some of the results are very different from the similar studies conducted in the advanced economies. It is found that the firms in the same industry can have different capital structures and there is a negative correlation between the profitability and capital structure of the companies. Interestingly, no correlation is found between R&D expenses and capital structure of the company. It was also concluded that no extra market power is attained because of high leverage. Keywords: Capital Structure, Product Market, Market Structure, Profitability, Market Power, Capital Expenditure Introduction Capital structure refers to the way a corporation finances its assets through some combination of equity, debt, or hybrid securities. A firm’s capital structure is thus, the composition or ‘structure’ of its liabilities. The modern theory of capital structure began...

It is also an extremely competitive arena. Some of the patterns to emerge from this market over the last few years are listed below. 1. Sales Figures1 Historical and Current The last strong rise in sales was in 1998 (14.3m), continuing into 1999, however, in 2000 sales fell by 2.2% (14.7m) and stayed at this level in 2001. In 2002 sales fell by 3%, 2003 saw an increase of nearly 5% but this was a result of an expanding marketplace, in reality there was another fall of 1% when comparing sales in the same EU member countries. 2004 saw a genuine 2% increase in registrations, remained stable in 2005, showed a substantial 4% rise in 2006 but then the percentage increase dropped to 1% in 2007. In 2008 European car sales figures were easily the worst for over a decade: 14.6m in extended Europe, 13.6m in the core economies, a drop of 8.2% and 8.1% respectively over 2007 figures. Gloomy forecasts for 2009 proved to be well founded with the whole market falling by a further 0.7% to 14.5m, however, the market excluding the new EU countries did show a 0.7% improvement to 13.7m...
