...One night I was at work and one of my clients came in the shelter intoxicated, so I asked her to go upstairs to her room and don’t come out until she was sober. A few hours later I heard arguing, yelling and screaming coming from upstairs. I went upstairs to find two of the residents arguing. One of who was intoxicated that I sent upstairs earlier. I asked the ladies to stop over and over again and finally I told them that if they did not stop that I would call the police and have them escorted out of the building. They still did not stop. They went on and on, so I called the police because they were being disruptive. There were also five other residents and their children in the shelter at the time. The factors that I had to consider was that if the two women would have went to jail their children would have went to DCFS. I had no choice because when I asked them to stop, they did not listen. I could not let them put themselves or the other residents in danger. The values that led me to make my decision was that I was always taught to do what is right and that if someone is in danger to get help. The ladies was impacted by my decision because when the police arrived he told them that if they continued, and he had to come back again that he would arrest both of them. The outcome was that the ladies were not arrested, they calmed down and went to their rooms and the rest of the night went smooth....

...An ethical decision that I made in my professional life is to go back to school to get a degree in Human Services. I been in the medical field for ten plus years now. I like my job but I want to do something different. I want another job where I am still helping out my fellow man. When I decided to go back to school I had to figure out if I would be able to go to school and work at the same time. I went to a community college at first to study Human Services but I realized the classes were getting hectic for me to sign up for because I had to find a class that would fit my schedule as far as the time and the dates. When things did not work out I had to decide whether or not to continue going to school at the community college or find another school that will work around my work schedule and my family. My family suggested to me that I find a school on line. I did my research and I chose to continue my education at the University of Phoenix. This is my fourth semester taken classes on line and I love it. This makes me happy because I can work, get my degree, and have time for my family members all at the same time. I want to be a Human Service worker for children or the elderly. I can’t wait until I finish because I will be accomplishing something for myself and my...

...The Human Services Agency has incorporated standard operating procedures (SOP) that abide by the rules set forth by the Law and Ethics board. After studying these procedures I would say I have to agree with the way the Human Services Agency does things. The adherence to rules set forth by a higher body is very important. It ensures that the Agency acts appropriately when dealing with the problems of individuals. The laws that the Agency’s procedures are based on are very explicit. Furthermore it is clear that the laws should not be changed at all. The laws explain in great detail how to deal with conflicts that can occur between worker and coworker or between the Agency and a client. The laws also state that employees of the Agency must all work together in order to help clients as much as possible. Part of working together is making sure that all employees are kept abreast of previous and current Agency issues. Confidentiality agreements between the Agency and clients are strictly upheld. This privacy is upheld as long as the life of the client or any other external individual or group is not in danger. The standard operating procedures of the Agency fit perfectly with our current law system. However as always there are ways to improve. In order for the Human Services Agency to uphold its reliability all employees should follow to the letter standard operating procedures which are set by the Law and Ethics Board. The SOP is based on written laws that must be followed and...

He injured people although they were not serious he did not improve it. He went as far as not to take the advice from Ms. Armstrong. What impact did the director’s actions and attitudes have on the Acre Woods culture? There are a few. ...Associate Level Material Appendix D Acre Woods Retirement Community Case Study Acre Woods is a private retirement community with 275 senior residents. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of its residents through physical and emotional care. Sarah Armstrong, Acre Woods’ resident physical therapist, manages the retirement community’s activity program. Recently, Acre Woods added a pool to its rehabilitation center to facilitate resident exercise and aquatic therapy. The residents’ monthly rent was raised to help finance the pool. After the pool was constructed, Sarah immediately contacted the director of Acre Woods, Mark Adams, with concerns that the pool did not meet some important specifications included in the original design, such as nonslip treads on the stairs and improved wheelchair access to the pool area. Mark advised Sarah that the residents would be happy to have a pool, even if it did not incorporate all the requested special features. When Sarah asked why the new ramp and stair treads were not provided even though they were included in the budget, the director remarked that Sarah’s job was to provide physical therapy, not to worry about the budget. Over the next month, four Acre Woods residents had minor falls using the pool stairs. While the accidents were not serious, other residents began to express fears about using the pool. Sarah contacted Mark again to relate resident complaints and to stress the need for pool accessibility and safety improvements...

...Personal Leadership Plan HSM/230 Personal Leadership Plan Throughout life one will encounter many experiences and there is a lesson in each experience. I have embraced the experiences, learned from them and will use them to show others that there is life after drug abuse and incarceration. I currently volunteer with an organization that provides a safe and sober living environment for women in recovery. My goal is to assist women transitioning back into society after incarceration. The United States has become the world leader in incarcerating its people with over 2.3 billion being locked up and then being released back into society without skills needed to become a productive member of society. While ethics are of great importance in any human service field, the need for an ethical leader is crucial in this area. There will be a number of challenges working with this population. The worker will have a commitment to providing the resources that will assist the women rebuild their lives but there is a moral obligation to the community as well. I am a firm believer that we all have to be held responsible for our actions and there are consequences to the choices one makes, however there has to become a time when it can be said that one has paid for his or her choices and be allowed to move forward. It is my belief that all people must be treated with respect and dignity. The stigma placed on those who have a conviction does not allow that and places many barriers...

...HSM 230 Personal Leadership Plan The area of human services in which I would most like to work is with the homeless. Besides having my own personal experiences with homelessness, I think that it is an ongoing issue in the United States that needs community and governmental assistance. With the economy being in a state of recession, the rate of homelessness is continuing to increase with no sign of slowing down. People are losing their incomes leading them to losing their homes. While some are able to downsize to a smaller place that is more affordable for themselves and their families, there are others that are unable to secure a place to live and have resorted to either living with relatives, in motels or even worse, shelters. As a leader in the field that I have chosen, the moral responsibility that I would need to encompass is helping those that need to be helped to the best of my ability. I would need to help and serve the homeless because it is something that I am truly passionate about, not because there is something in it for me other than the knowing that I assisted in servicing those in my community. I would need to protect my clients right to privacy and refrain from crossing the lines of maintaining a relationship other than professional; even though I do believe that organizations benefit from transformational leadership. I would also need to treat those in need with the upmost dignity and respect. One thing that we must realize is that as a leader of...
