Goals and Objectives

Organizations face the daily challenge of operating proficiently and successfully. Clearly defined goals and objectives must be established in order for an organization to achieve their mission. Most organizations must consider the, sociological, economic, political, professional and technological environmental issues when setting their goals. Generating suitable goals and objectives for an agency requires an intensive deliberation into a variety of concepts. An agencies success is reliant on determining if the objectives have indeed been accomplished. If the objectives are not clear and concise, it is difficult to identify the degree by which the objectives have actually been met. The process of creating clear goals and objectives can be immensely difficult within any organization. The fusion into the organizational approach means that the successful outcome of such processes is essential for organizational success. The success of an objective is heavily linked to the agencies goals. This accompaniment ensures that there is a cohesive and task specific objective that will seamlessly lead to achieving an agency’s goal. The National Institute of Health mission is “to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability” (USA.gov, 2012). It is through this mission statement that helps the organization protecting and improving health for all parties that make their goals manifested at the highest level of scientific integrity in the conduct of science. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is one program that receives funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (Government, 2008). The NIAAA helps and provides research on the impact of how alcohol affects humanities health and well-being. This agency is one of the largest financial supporters of alcohol research in the world. When distinguishing between goals and objectives it is crucial to keep in mind that there is a difference between the two. Within the textbook “a goal is an abstract and general statement of desired outcomes and an objective is a concrete operational statement about a desired observable outcome” ((Chambers & Wedel, 2005 p. 65). One of the many goals of NIAAA is to lead a national effort to reduce alcohol-related problems by conducting and supporting alcohol-related research in a wide range of scientific areas including genetics, neuroscience, epidemiology, prevention, and treatment (Government, 2008). In addition, with other research institutes and federal programs, international, national, and statewide, it is essential that research findings are translated and disseminated accordingly to the public as well as policy makers (USA.gov, 2012). In order to evaluate the specific goals and objective of the National Institute of Health, the text sites several key tools that help magnify the validity of their mission. It is these unique criteria that enable a sound judgment to be formed about an organization ability to create a clear and concise plan.

Research within the NIAAA, coupled with private and government funding aims to remove the stigma associated with alcohol problems and to better understand the health risks and benefits of consuming alcohol, as well as why it can cause addiction. Through programs like this, it is the goal and objective to develop an effective prevention and treatment system that will address all aspects that result from both excessive drinking and underage alcohol usage (Government, 2008). With the establish relationship within the United States, the National Institutes of Health traces its roots to 1887, when a one-room laboratory was created within the Marine Hospital Service (MHS), predecessor agency to the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS), thus making its goals and objectives long-term (Government, Department of Health and Human Services, 2011).

In conclusion, ensuring organizational success is essential within all facets of daily operations. The process of creating clear goals and objectives is critical for any organization to achieve triumph. Due to the increase and severity of recent corporate scandals, shareholders and clients want to invest in organizations well known for their ethical business practices. In addition, organizations that construct a framework of clearly defined goals and objectives such as those from NIH will sure to succeed.
