Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
George Dekle

Professor Laura King
January 21, 2014 This is a tale of the archetypical(1) Heroine(2) which has been passed down through the Collective Consciousness(3). Born as a lowly slave her journey is one to surpass her meager beginnings. She is faced with a world in which she finds her worldly superiors mentally inferior to herself. By taking the initiative and doing things without first informing her master she is able to outwit everyone. In doing so she kills forty murderers. Eventually, her status is raised to that of a citizen and she is celebrated beyond normal humans (Janaro & Altshuler, 2012). Cassim and Ali Baba are two brothers. Cassim married a woman and received a large dowery and lived in wealth. Ali Baba was a poor woodcutter as he had to provide for his wife himself. Ali found a cave that thieves were storing gold in. Curiosity(4) got the best of him and he went inside. He was careful to only steal a small bag so that it would go unnoticed. Cassim found out and took a donkey trying to steal as much as possible. Because he was greedy(5) he was caught and murdered by the thieves. The body chopped up and hung as a warning. Ali being of a good nature made sure his brother got a decent burial(6). Morgiana was a slave girl who had belonged to Cassim. Ali knew her to be smart and asked for her help in keeping the details of her masters’ death a secret. She successfully faked her masters death through cunning(7) so that no one would be suspicious that he had been murdered. Meanwhile Ali took his brothers wife as an additional wife under Islamic law(8). The thieves noticed the body was missing and through cunning discovered who Ali was. The captain asked for a volunteer to discover who else knew about the secret cave. One of the 40(9) thieves volunteered and discovered who Ali was by bribing someone with a single piece of gold. He marked the house with a piece of chalk. Morgiana realized what was happening and marked every house with the same mark. That night the thieves come to murder Ali and his household but can not find it. The captain rewards the thief for his failure by beheading him. The next night a second thief is sent out who fails in similar fashion. The captain also puts this thieve to death. Finally the captain reasons that if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. He goes to find the house so he can remember what it looks like. He tricks Ali into thinking he is an oil merchant. Ali takes in 35 jars containing containing(10) the remaining thieves into his house. They are supposed to break the clay pots with their knives at night and kill the family. When she discovered the thieves inside of the jars she did not panic like the average woman and scream which would have resulted in her death. Morgiana again outwits them by pouring boiling oil into the pots and killing the thieves. In the morning discovering that the slave had saved his family from certain doom Ali vows to grant her freedom. The captain goes back to his cave full of gold and instead of cutting his losses gets emotional and refuses to accept his fate refuses to accept his fate(11). He vows to take revenge(12). The captain disguises himself again and gets himself invited to a banquet by Ali. Morgiana does some Arabian dancing at the dinner and plunges a dagger into the captain’s heart. Upon learning she has saved him yet again Ali grants Morgiana her freedom because of her prudence(13) and marries his son to her. The wedding was celebrated with glorious splendor. Ali being smart enough to count to forty realizes two of the thieves are not accounted for. He does not know that the captain struck them down in anger. He waits a few years before venturing to the cave and taking the rest of the gold. His family and descendents live in splendor (Al-Shaykh 2011). In conclusion the main moral of this story is to appreciate what you have. Also it is a warning against being greedy and not to take advantage of what is already possessed. Although this is Arabian mythology it contains some common morals from Greek mythology. Curiosity can be dangerous (Pandora). Never accept presents from the enemy (Trojan Horse). Accept your fate (Orpheus). Use prudence and shun impulse (Theseus). I selected this tale over the other one thousand in the book because it is loaded with morals. It is my favorite story from One Thousand and One Nights. The value of story telling is that it impacts self conception and helps us relate to social experiences. This story is effective for teaching loyalty and not being greedy. The reason that stories can be more effective than rules is simple. Rules do not contain a parable explaining how they are applicable. Stories help us see how the values can be applied in our own lives.

...Virtual Lab Demonstrating the Scientific Method SCIE207-1302B-06 Biology Lab American Intercontinental University Purpose: To determine how added nitrogen affects the growth in arable and non-arable soils. Introduction: Nitrogen is known by others to be the main component that is most likely to limit growth in several ordinary terrestrial and marine ecosystems (Vitousek & Howarth, 1991). Arable soil is the perfect kind of soil used in agriculture that allows a variety of crops to grow (M.U.S.E., 2010). Hypothesis: It is determined that plants only grow on arable land when receiving an adequate amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Methods: To get my lab results I started with the introduction video titled Using the Scientific Method. At the end of the video a table appeared which represented the amount of mineral nitrogen fertilization. To gather data for the Arable soil, and the Nonarable Sandy Loam soil this following process was taken, in step 1 I clicked on the amount of mineral nitrogen which started with 0, and then I clicked the Arable Soil button which gave me the amount of yield of maize. I clicked the Nonarable Sandy Loam Soil button to get the amount of yield of maize. I repeated this step 1 process from the chart that is measure in multiplies of 20, up to 180. After gathering this information I filled in the lab report with the number of yield of maize for each amount of mineral nitrogen for the Arable and Nonarable soil. Results: This...

This also explains the role of BTL strategies carried out so far and a few consumer insights about the market so as to forecast its position. Page | 1 RESEARCH PAPER Abstract Royal Challenge Whisky brand was launched in 1886 by Shaw Wallace & company. The brand had a healthy growth of about 10 percent till 2005 when the company was bought by the country’s largest spirit maker United Spirits Limited. RC had sales above one million cases in the year 2003-04 with a market share of 56 percent in the premium segment whisky which had grown to 65 percent at the end of December 2003 in competition with UB Spirits Division’s Signature Whisky and Seagram’s Blenders Pride. Over the year, UB kept working on the brand to bring up the same position by various marketing activities like linking the brand with IPL cricket Team (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and an associate sponsor of India's first Formula 1 team Force India etc. In 2014, Diageo bought majority stake in USL and came up with pricing strategy to decrease the prices in order to retain the market share, while other companies such as Pernod Ricard...

Anti Federalism Dbq

...solutions to the fears of the anti federalists was clearly laid in the Federalist papers. Specifically, we see Federalist Paper author James Madison combat the Anti Federalists fears in Federalist Papers 14, 10, and 51. In Federalist 14, Madison argues against the idea that the United States is too large to function as an effective republic. Anti-Federalists believe that the people are the power in a republic, and the people must properly be represented by people who share their values and beliefs. Madison argues for this, but adds his own theory on the issue: “in a republic, they assemble and administer it by their representatives and agents. A republic may be extended over a large region”(Madison, 95). By this statement, Madison keeps the benefits of a Montiquesian theory, but believes that the representatives elected by the people as can still give people the power to rule over government, even with the addition of a strong national government. Similarly, Madison believed that Representatives from each state, joined together on a national scale, could properly represent all Americans interests. Madison also goes on to encourage Americans to dream big, even though a successful large republic is a “novelty”(Madison, 99), and has yet to be perfected. Next in Federalist 10, Madison tends to the remedy regarding factions. In order to correct “factious spirits that have tainted our public administrations”(Madison, 72), the government must control the effects of factions. He argues...

...Players employ many different offensive strategies with different goals. Most basic strategies are an attempt to create open lanes on the field for the exchange of the disc between the thrower and the receiver. Organized teams assign positions to the players based on their specific strengths. Designated throwers are called handlers and designated receivers are called cutters. The amount of autonomy or overlap between these positions depends on the make-up of the team. Vertical stack[edit] One of the most common offensive strategies is the vertical stack. In this strategy, a number of offensive players line up between the disc and the end zone they are attacking. From this position, players in the stack make cuts (sudden sprints) into the space available, attempting to get open and receive the disc. The stack generally lines up in the middle of the field, thereby opening up two lanes along the sidelines for cuts, although a captain may occasionally call for the stack to line up closer to one sideline, leaving open just one larger cutting lane on the other side. Variations of the vertical stack include the Side Stack, where the stack is moved to a sideline and one player is isolated in the open space, and the Split Stack, where players are split between two stacks, one on either sideline. In vertical stack offenses, one player usually plays the role of 'dump', offering a reset option which sets up behind the player with the disc. Horizontal stack[edit] Another popular offensive...

Federalist 10 Essay

...During the ratification process of the United States Constitution, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay published a series of anonymous articles in the New York Times. Published under the name Publius, "The Federalist Papers," as they were called, advocated for the ratification of the new Constitution by New York State. Each of the papers, therefore, outlines the benefits of one united nation, as well as the interests of, and supported by, the proposed government. Written by Madison, Federalist Paper No. 10, generally considered one of the most important articles, concerns itself with the problems of and plausible solutions for the formation of factions. Through multiple assertions concerning the dangers of factions and the benefits of a republic, Madison formed one of the major arguments in favor of the United States Constitution.
