From the beginning of the story, the reader is exposed to the abnormal behaviours of Luc and Hannah’s son, Hugo Levestque. Hugo continuously shows multiple behaviours that tend to put him into menacing situautions, allowing him to build up walls in order to isolate himself. Throughout the novel, Hugo tends to spend his time alone in his room as he prefers to be away from the rest of his family. When the narrarotor touches upon Hugo’s thoughts and actions, they say, “He closed his bedroom door, and stood there breathing hard. He hated his fucking father and depressed rag doll of a mother,” (Page 223). The fist into its nose. The face looked at him, surprised. He swung again, this time at the mouth, with another satisfying impact. This quote alludes that the self-harm that Hugo is inflicting on himself is a way of managing with all of the stress around him. Hugo’s actions, “... serve as a coping strategy. It gives temporary relief…” (ULifeline) and allows for him to release his inner emotion of anger as he is unable to share how he feels with those around him. Before Hugo decided to turn to self-harm, Hannah made her family visit a phcologist (spelling mistake) in order to help improve commincation (spelling mistake). When the the pcycologist (spelling mistake), talked about violence throughout the family. Hugo’s dad instantly denies the idea. “Luc cleared his throat. “There has been no violence in our family.” He paused, “None to speak of.” At this moment, Hugo chose that moment to look up
