HUM 112 Week 4 Discussion #1 10/28/2014

"Beethoven; Art and Protest in the 1800s" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: * Listen to one (1) composition (i.e., for a symphony) by Beethoven, a transitional figure between classical and romantic music. Identify the composition that you listened to, and determine whether you would characterize the chosen composition as either the Classical or Romantic style of music. Explain the key features that lead you to your conclusion. Briefly, identify one (1) modern musician who you believe was great at one type of music yet pioneered another.

I listened to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in its entirety. I’m not musically inclined and I do not have the ability to read or write music, however after listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 is Romantic more than classical. Although you can find some of both characteristics while listening like the frequent changes in the tempo that is typically found in Romantic music and the texture of Classical music which is essentially homophonic. While listening to the first movement, the gentle sounds of the instruments warming up softly with violins played with a structure rhythm and drums adding to the volume. The next two movements was at a faster pace. There was some emotion present in the way the music went from fast to slow as the volume build from soft to very loud. The final movement seemed more relaxing to listen to.
A modern day composer that I found was Ray Charles Robinson better known as Ray Charles. His music ranged from R&B, gospel, pop and country. Because of his distinct sound, he was considered a musical genius.

Cultural Activity Report

...Week 10 Assignment 3: Cultural Activity Report John Smith  Dr. Justyna Japola-DesVergnes HUM 112 September 6, 2015 For the Week 10, Assignment 3, I chose to attend the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, located in the “Museum District” of Richmond, Virginia. The museum was opened on January 16, 1936, which was during the great depression. I attended the museum with my Fiancé on September 5, 2015 and was the first time attending, for the both of us. It is currently open 365 days a year, and offers free admission other than to any of the special exhibits. Upon researching different museums and events to attend in the area, I decided that this museum would be most appropriate because it has a very extensive American art collection, housing items from the late 17th through the mid-20th century. It is currently hosting the exhibition Spotlight Loan: Eastman Johnson’s Views of Mount Vernon, which I found to be the highlight of my trip. In the text, I noted that there are numerous paintings by Eastman Johnson, an American painter, as well. One that particularly stood out to me was Negro Life in the South, 1959. The painting was of his father’s household slaves in Washington, DC. The slaves were portrayed as content, while playing music, dancing and conversing outside of their quarters. While some saw them as cheerful, abolitionists noted the crumbling architecture of the quarters in comparison to the house beside them, and also their tattered clothing (Sayre, 2015, p.967). In contrast...

Contrast Analysis

...Introduction The focus of the present thesis is the passive voice, perceived from a semantico-syntactic point of view. My primary aim is to explore the use and functions of the passive voice in English, examining the reasons which motivate an author to prefer the passive form to the active one. Secondary interest is devoted to the function and the use of the passive voice in Czech. As research material I have chosen the short stories by the American writer O. Henry and their Czech translations by Stanislav Klíma. The reasons why I have chosen the genre of a short story are that it is noted for the unity of time, place and action. I believe that due to this fact, the results of my research will give higher evidence of the use of the passive voice since the basis for comparison is unified and compact contrary to, for example, a novel. For the same reason of evidence, I explore just the translations of one translator, since everyone has his/her personal style and different way of thinking and understanding of original text. I am interested in the issue of information packaging, especially in the different ways of expressing one and the same reality in the two languages: when both active and passive versions are formally permitted, what factors favour the choice of one over other? The passive voice is a phenomenon which is involved both in English and in Czech but in unlike extent. As far as I know, the passive voice is a favourite means of expression in English whereas in Czech...

Telemedicine

...Papers ................................................................................................................................. Keynote presentation Q Telemedicine support for the developing world Richard Wootton Centre for Online Health, University of Queensland, Australia Summary Telemedicine has been used for some years in the industrialized world, albeit with rather mixed success. There is also a considerable literature on the potential use of telemedicine for the developing world. However, there are few reports of the actual use of telemedicine there. A review identified five telemedicine networks providing second opinions; each network had been in operation for over five years. Although they have different aims and methods of operation, they exhibit some common features. In particular, none of them appear to be dealing with markedly increasing referral rates. Rough calculations suggest that only about 0.1% of the potential telemedicine demand from the developing world is being met. Possible reasons include the referrers being too busy and a perceived loss of control. If this analysis is correct, then the right strategy for future telemedicine in developing countries will be to concentrate on the construction of within-country networks that demonstrably alter health outcomes, can be shown to be cost-effective and sustainable, and will provide a model for other countries to copy. ..............................................................
