...Poets of the Harlem Renaissance David Glenn HUM112 It was during the 1920’s and 30’s in which a new movement was taking place in the United States. A movement that had kindled a brand new kind of cultural identity for Black Americans. An almost spiritual “coming of age” (Foner & Garraty, 1991), the Harlem Renaissance was a time in which the African American communities of the United States began making strides in literary, artistic, and intellectual achievement. While not necessarily contained to the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, Harlem certainly attracted the largest concentration of this particular intellect and served as the epicenter of this historic movement. Some of the most famous writers in American history emerged from this cultural awakening and include but are not limited to the talents of Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen. Possibly the most recognizable name of the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes was a poet and writer who through several publications, became “one of the foremost interpreters to the world of the black experience in the United States” (Hutchinson, 2014). His parents had separated shortly after his birth and was raised mostly by his grandmother. Unfortunately, she had passed while Langston was in his early teens and he had been left with the choice of living with his mother, which is when he first began to cultivate his writing talent. His work during this era was primarily influenced by his life within the now historic...

...Maxfield Parrish and Little Sugar River at Noon Kristina Falwell Dr. Bruce Macdonald World Cultures II HUM112 August 21, 2011 Abstract This report describes a vivid depiction of the painting Little Sugar River at Noon. In addition the report touches on the painter and illustrator Fredrick Maxfield Parrish. It goes on to describe how oil paints are developed. Finally, it further defines how this medium of art allows the painting to have texture and dimension. The painting the Little Sugar River at Noon is a New England landscape (Parrish). It depicts a sandy beach along a river bend with a vivid blue sky and a couple of big white fluffy clouds. The little river is unmoving and clear like a sheet of glass. The river wines around the landscape jutting in and out of the valley. The beech is not made completely of sand there are some bushes and moss or grass mixed in with the sand. The sky and surrounding foliage are reflected of the surface of the river. Off in the distance there are more trees, hills, and mountains. The trees are varying heights, types, and shades of green. The trees add a calm feeling to the painting which allows you to imagine and indulge in a great summer day. The hills and mountains off in the very far distance have rounded peeks. They have been painted in hues of reds, browns, grays, and blues; these mixtures of colors add to the majestic serene picture landscape. This style of paining was an American Romantic Landscape (Sayre,...

...Appleton Museum of Art Rachel R. Solomon Strayer University: Online HUM112: World Cultures II Dr. Naomi Sanderovsky March 16, 2014 Appleton Museum of Art My fiancée, two of my three future step-children and I visited the Appleton Museum of Art this past weekend on Sunday afternoon, March 9, 2014. I know the boys would have rather been shooting paint guns outside but I had done a little research on what exhibitions were showing and I hoped their father could handle a preteen and young teenager for at least a good hour. After passing through the open air courtyard we entered the beautiful two-story travertine marble Appleton Museum located in Ocala, Florida off of Silver Springs Boulevard. The first thing I did was speak with a young lady, Michelle, at the information desk for a good ten minutes getting a rough draft of where permanent collections are located and what the boys would be most interested. I already knew I could not take pictures but was made aware that I could only use a pencil to mark my notes in my notebook. They had a large supply of No. 2 pencils and she was happy to hand me one. I am a stickler for rules so I smiled and thanked her for it. The boys and my fiancée were off to see the current exhibits featuring the children’s artwork that was organized by the State Organization on Arts and Disabilities and Industrial Nature that features works by Baltimore, Ohio’s material artists, Michelle Stitzlein. Since this museum was founded by Arthur I. Appleton...

...Harlem Renassainse poets The Harlem Renaissance Poets: Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen Strayer University HUM112 May 29, 2013 Langston Hughes often referred to as the leader of the leader of the Harlem Renaissance or the father of Harlem Renaissance poetry. Pulling from major iconic influences such as Paul Laurence Dunbar, Walk Whitman, and Carl Sandburg; who Langston Hughes referred to as, his “guiding star”, and was ultimately responsible Hughes’ use of free verse. With the completion of his first two books, The Weary Blues (1926) and Fine Clothes to the Jew (1927), Langston Hughes earned his place as a major driving force of the Harlem Renaissance (Rampersad, 2013). One of the major contributions to the Harlem Renaissance was the article called,”The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain” in the June 23, 1926 edition of The Nation. In the article is describes as a manifesto in which Langston Hughes “skillfully argues the need for both race pride and artistic independence.” (Rampersad, 2013) Countee Cullen is somewhat viewed as a mystery. Facts about his location of birth, and early childhood life cannot be exactly pinpointed. Originally it was claimed by Cullen on a New York transcript that he was born in Louisville, Kentucky but later claimed New York City as his official place of birth. The way that Countee Cullen contributed to the Harlem Renaissance was through the many talents he displayed as a poet, children’s writer, novelist, translator, playwright, and...

...Running Head: THE CRY FOR NEW BIRTH The Cry for New Birth Tammy Wilkins Dr. Nancy Barlar HUM112 May 21, 2012 The Cry for New Birth President Lincoln’s fiery compassion to save the Union by ending slavery produced the Emancipation Proclamation, ending the drudgery and dehumanization of African Americans in 1863. Lincoln had a passion for the newly released slaves and with the best of intentions, planned to construct colonies for them to live in after they were released but these intentions were never realized. It wasn’t until 1920 that a group of literary writers began their own cry for emancipation and through their compassion for their fellow African Americans, began putting those feelings and thoughts on paper in the form of writings and poetry. This cry of lamentation, expressed through heart rending writings and heart felt poetry, was known as the Harlem Renaissance, and otherwise referred to as the “New Negro Movement.” There were many changes that were to be seen during this rebirth that lasted twenty four years. The writings were not only the lament of men and women voicing their rage and empathy for their fellow African Americans plight of slavery, but were writings that would sooth the wounds of former slavery and take the former slaves trough the far reaching effects of a stock market crash and the further woes of the ensuing Great Depression. The renaissance period brought forth the movement that changed the entire...
