When looking at two countries on the Fortune 100 list I choose the number one company and the number 100 company. Those two companies are Google and Protiviti, Inc. Both companies are doing very well and have similarities and differences. Upon dissecting the two companies and figuring out why they belong on the Fortune 100 list, I found the following.
The number one best company to work for in the world is Google. Google offers a great deal of products and services that are very useful. Google has over 50 different products listed on their website. The products are categorized by web products, mobile products, business products, media, Geo, specialized search, home & office, social, and innovation. A lot of their products can be used on mobile devices by downloading them as applications. Some of the applications that are very popular that Google created is Google Maps, Gmail, Drive, Google Wallet, Google Translate, Calendar, and many others. One application that is really cool is Google Wallet. It is basically like a prepaid credit card that is monitored by Google’s bank. You are able to make purchases as if it was a regular card. You can send and receive money. This is a very helpful application/service especially for parents that are giving allowances to their kids, college student’s receiving money from their parents, and for people who like to separate their money for different reasons. Another fascinating product that Google has created is Google Translate. Google Translate allows you to instantly translate text, web pages, and files between over 50 languages. That is very impressive for a company to take that many languages and create the system to be able to translate from almost any language to another language. Google is always figuring out ways to improve their current products by adding new features and increasing the ease of use. Google has even stepped into the realm of social media with Google+, Blogger, Groups, and Hangouts. All of these products can be used to keep in touch with people. Since almost everyone use Gmail as their preferred email client, Google+ is automatically created for you. You don’t have to use if you do not want to, but the option is available and it is easy to set up. Google hangouts is a chat client that has audio, video, and text messaging that you can have multiple people in at once. We have used google hangouts for work to conduct meetings or conference calls with other businesses that we could not easily get to. Googles products are very innovative and are always current.
Protiviti, Inc. on the other hand still made it to the list of the most successful companies, but ranked at 100 out of 100. Protiviti is a global consulting firm that offers expertise in finance, business operations, technology, transactions, governance, risk and compliance. They are very successful and almost 30 percent of their U.S. clients are on the Fortune 1000 Companies and over 50 percent for the Fortune 100 list. For a company this successful seems like they would be over worked and stressed out trying to keep of the demands from other successful companies. The perfect statement that sums up their work ethic is “Most consulting firms are not known for their work-life balance, but employees at Protiviti Inc. have the flexibility they need to do their best at home and work. Employees at the Menlo Park, California-based firm enjoy flexible schedules, the option to work from home when needed and the freedom to take a sabbatical to pursue their passions. Although the global firm is growing quickly, senior leaders make time to talk with employees either one-on-one or in groups. Professionals who are passionate about client services and seek continuous learning opportunities will fit right in. Those who are content with the status quo may want to look elsewhere. “As a consultant I have worked at previous companies that ran their employees into the ground," says one employee. "Protiviti is a consulting firm that believes in work-life balance.” (Protiviti Inc., us.greatrated.com) Both Google and Protiviti Inc. believe in work life balance and giving their employees perks.
Google is a pretty large company and according to 2015 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For, Google has 28,633 employees. Google’s mission “is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” (Company Overview, Google.com) Google’s economic and regulatory environment is very involved. Google has generated $54 billion in economic activity for American businesses, website publishers, and non-profits.” (Testimony of Milo Medin, Google 2011). Google has so many services and uses so many resources to keep their products running, to update, hire staff, etc. that they contribute a lot to the economy. One of the regulatory process that Google has to follow is a decision making process from the government when waiting to launch new products such as there fiber optic plan for high speed internet. Google has stressed that time is an important factor when making decisions for new products. Protiviti has to follow a lot of regulations because they are a global company. They have to follow international laws and state laws wherever their company is located.
Google and Protiviti offer different perks that are appealing to their employees and make their employees time their more enjoyable. Protiviti offers: * college tuition reimbursement up to $5,000 * average annual training for full time salaried employees: 100 hours * They create * Individual development plans * A career development platform * Career development programs * Learning maps and various certification opportunities * Employees can access Protiviti University online
Protiviti University is an online web based system where employees can read books, watch webinars, and sign up for in person learning opportunities. This is to keep their staff motivated and educated where they can gain CEU’s for completing some of the trainings, it is all self-led and self-paced taking the pressure off of them to finish by a deadline. Google on the other hand has a similar culture, but is much more developed and evolved. Since Google is such a large company and has many departments they want their employees to interact with them and share ideas as they go. Google’s People Operations or better known as Human Operations engineer their environment through data and analysis. Some of the perks that Google offers are: * Nap Pods – who wouldn’t want to take a nap on the job? * Free health and dental (Which is a huge benefit!) * Gyms and swimming pools * Massages * Tennis Courts * Restaurant booths for causal meetings * Free hair cuts * Free food (3 meals a day and as many snacks as you want) * Treadmill desks are even an option.
There are many more perks that Google offers, but all of them are beneficial in some way.
Google is always analyzing and taking data on the things that people like and dislike and make changes they call nudges. Google receives about 2.5 million resumes a year and that’s because it is the dream place to work. Google associates can, and are encouraged to ask questions directly to executives about any number of company issues. The corporate offices are designed to encourage interactions between Googlers (google employees) between departments, and to start conversations about work as well as their personal lives. Google has people dedicated to keeping employees happy and maintain productivity. (Google, 2013). Three human resource strategies that both companies could use to improve their companies is figure out a sure way to measure your staff’s happiness. I think that google is on a good track to measuring how their employees feel about certain things, even down to wall colors. This is n important aspect of a company because it allows you to see what your employees like and what they don’t like about the job. By analyzing, measuring, and pinpointing what things are less aversive and what things are fun, the company can motivate employees to stay and enjoy their job. I believe Protiviti and Google both do this, but it needs to be consistent across all departments and facilities the company owns. The second strategy both companies can use is have a quarterly evaluations that they conduct that look overall of their processes and systems for effectiveness. This will go hand in hand with being able to measure everything because when they can measure systems in place it makes the evaluation process a lot easier because you can change things based on data. If you set a standard you want your company or system to run at then you just have to make sure you are at that standard or higher. If not then you know you need to make a change which brings me to my last suggestions. Make sure when problems are identified that they immediately go into the process of change. I know in business it is not easy to just change things and require planning, training, implementation, and monitoring. IF they go into the process then that means you are making changes as you see tm. This will show your employees that your management cares and is willing to make changes to when they see something isn’t working. Overall Google and Protiviti Inc., are great companies and made it to the Fortune 500 list for a reason. By implementing some basic human resource functions and making sure they stay in place, the companies can remain 2 of the best companies to work for. . Bibliography
