Jesus and Muhammad

...his life story is important to Muslims because his “character is considered a model of the teachings in the Qur’an,” (Fisher, p. 365). Muhammad and Jesus both have holy books reciting their lives and teachings. Jesus’ life and teaching can be found in the Bible, while the Qur’an focuses on Muhammad. The Bible was not written for 40 to 60 years after the death of Jesus and there are many versions of this holy book. The Bible cannot be put in any chronological order because there are so many missing years of Jesus’ life, plus they are based on oral transmissions of what occurred. “The heart of Islam is not the Prophet but the revelations he received. Collectively they are called the Qur’an (“reading” or “reciting”),” (Fisher, p. 370). The Qur’an covers messages that Muhammad received over a period of 23 years. “At first they were striking affirmations...

Concumer Groups

...Internet, that share common concerns about a marketplace. Furthermore, a May 2013 Fox Business article noted a study by the 1,400-member Environmental Working Group revealing that SPF labels on sunscreen products were regularly misleading. These groups typically communicate concerns or findings with the public in an effort to hold businesses accountable for meeting social and environmental standards.” For the purpose of this project this author has selected to conduct further research on the Generation Y consumer group. Generation Y is also known as Millennials and they are the generational cohort that follows Generation X and have birth years ranging from the early 1980’s to early 2000’s. According to Strauss and Howe (2000), they note “that each generation has common characteristics that give it a specific character, with four basic generational archetypes, repeating in a cycle. According to their theory, they predicted Millennials will become more like the "civic-minded" G.I. generation with a strong sense of community both local and global.” This general trait postulates that this consumer group is one of the most influential and the impacts of their reach can be seen in the dramatic shift to more social media such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, as this group detached from institutions and more involved in network of friends or colleagues. Immigration Crisis

...Research Paper Angelo State University Capstone Seminar Dr. James Phelps May 5, 2016 The Immigration Crisis Over the past 20 years immigration has become a hot topic in American culture. Since September 11, 2001, the concern for security at our nation’s borders is higher than ever. The threat of another attack lies imminent in the country’s mind. With the increase in concern for border security comes the issue of how to approach and handle the illegal immigration epidemic that is currently affecting the United States. We should first look back at the Roman Empire to give us a better understanding of the problems and solutions of immigration. There are astonishing similarities between the rise of the United States and power and the upsurge of Roman Republic. (Pagdan) These likenesses are not due to the specific character of both states, rather there is a common pattern in the development of every powerful state and the United States and Rome are examples of this pattern. The effects that immigration has on the United States are limitless. There have been endless debates over these effects since as early as the colonial times. The economic, fiscal and demographic effects are three major topics that tend to rule these debates. Regardless on someone’s political view of immigration, everyone should realize how it has and is shaping the United States today. The economic, fiscal and demographic effects are three major topics that tend to rule the debates on immigration...

The Search for Self and Space by Indian Dalit Joseph Macwan and African American Richard Wright

...The Search for Self and Space by Indian Dalit Joseph Macwan and African American Richard Wright Vaseemahmed G Qureshi Assistant Professor, Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda A B S T R A C T The subjugation of Dalits in India and Blacks in America is the result of slavery imposed on them in the name of castism in India and racism in America. Writers from these marginalized groups express their revolt against slavery through words. This presentation focuses on one black and one Dalit novel as a manifestation of the quest for self and space. Joseph Macwan comes forward as a prophet of Dalits’ welfare in Gujarat with his Angaliyat (1987) which is a representation of the emerging genre of the Dalit novel. It criticizes systems of internal colonization that exist within the Hindu caste system. Today, Dalits are both asserting their identity and challenging a society that had earlier excluded them, by writing about their lives themselves. Through the protagonist Teeha, the novel succeeds in demystifying ‘dalitness’ and redefining the real freedom of his fellow people. Richard Wright is one of the most acclaimed African American authors of the twentieth century. His Outsider (1953) depicts racial discrimination and the quest for identity. He creates a compelling story with his protagonist Cross Damon, a man of superior intellect who craves for peace and searches for his identity. In this quest, Cross Damon attempts to escape his past and start anew in a...

The History of Computers

...The abacus was an early aid for mathematical computations. Its only value is that it aids the memory of the human performing the calculation. A skilled abacus operator can work on addition and subtraction problems at the speed of a person equipped with a hand calculator (multiplication and division are slower). The abacus is often wrongly attributed to China. In fact, the oldest surviving abacus was used in 300 B.C. by the Babylonians. The abacus is still in use today, principally in the far east. A modern abacus consists of rings that slide over rods, but the older one pictured below dates from the time when pebbles were used for counting (the word "calculus" comes from the Latin word for pebble). A very old abacus A more modern abacus. Note how the abacus is really just a representation of the human fingers: the 5 lower rings on each rod represent the...

...Science Studies 2/2006 A Gendered Economy of Pleasure: Representations of Cars and Humans in Motoring Magazines Catharina Landström This paper analyses cultural signification in the co-production of gender and technology. Focusing on the popular genre of motoring magazines, it discerns a pattern organising men and women in opposite relations to cars. Men’s relationships with cars are premised on passion and pleasure while women are figured as rational and unable to attach emotionally to cars. This “gendered economy of pleasure” is traced in a close reading of motoring magazine representations of cars and humans. Further, a DVD representation of the Volvo YCC, a concept car developed by women for an imagined female user, is discussed in relation to this semiotic pattern. The paper is conceptual, texts are interpreted in order to bring forward aspects of meaning-making that are not immediately obvious. The objective is to critically illuminate one aspect of the cultural production of the car as a masculine technology. Keywords: cars, gender, pleasure This paper suggests a way in which to think about the cultural construction of the car as a masculine technology. Interpreting representations in motoring magazines, it traces a “gendered economy of pleasure” that organises the symbolical meanings of relationships between humans and cars. The objective is to contribute a critical perspective on cultural meaning-making to the feminist interrogation of the co-production of gender...
