Have you ever feared that your life was ending, going to flash before your eyes? That a loved one was going die? Hat you wouldn’t walk away unharmed? At least six hundred forty-seven people did. On August 5th 1969 a deadly storm formed off the coast of Africa. The seventh deadliest hurricane ever. Hurricane Camille was a lethal category five hurricane that caused the outcome not to be as pleasant as you would have expected, not many people made it out alive and those that did were very thankful on their part.

An estimated three hundred forty-seven people died when Camille hit the U.S. on August 14th 1969, Camille progressed west without organization. In Mississippi and Louisiana alone 58,927 buildings and home with impairment. Over eight hours twenty-eight inches of precipitation fell, causing flash floods and landslides. It took a total of forty-five days to clear all of the debris. Most of the deaths and the destruction from this hurricane was caused by Camille’s storm surges. The destruction was unpredicted and left many, many people homeless for months judging as it took forty-five day to clear all of the debris. Initially Cuba reported no casualties from the storm however sources reported that indeed there was, five people out of seven million were pronounced dead by his/her family. Then as it reached the Tennessee border it dropped large amounts of rain over West Virginia and Virginia. Twelve to Twenty inches of rain across the two states, with the highest Virginia has recorded (26 in). More than 1133 bridges reported with damage during the floods. In Nelson County alone 8,931 people injured or wounded, 5,662 homes destroyed, and 13,915 homes with excitable damage. After the Camille had weakened it moved towards Virginia quickly tracking back to the Atlantic Ocean.
