Pediatric Incision Care

...Pediatric Incision Care Abstract This paper explores several articles that show results about wound care education research and its effects throughout the world. It also provides information about a case study based on this type of research. The case study included an interview process and a presentation to the client. An important component of this research includes providing education specifically to parents or guardians of the pediatric population which include patients aged from zero to eighteen years of age. Since clients are often unaware of the appropriate interventions following incision care treatments, it is important to discuss and instruct them about the correct methods of providing care after a procedure. Keywords: wound care education, knowledge and skill of wound care, patient education, wound infection Wound Care Education Patients or caretakers of pediatrics patients are often unaware of how to care for incisions after medical procedures. Nurses are responsible for educating patients on the effects and complications of these treatments. Since wound infection has been attributed to many incision procedures, it is crucial that clients improve their knowledge and skills to reduce this type of infection when sent home. According to the Journal of Clinical Nursing, after providing a wound care program to 89 participants, there was greater understanding, skills, and satisfaction from the group who was provided the program than from those without the education...

Diabetes

...Approximately 17 million Americans have diabetes.(Lamb) As many as one-half are unaware they have it. This chronic disease causes serious health complications including renal failure, heart disease, stroke, and blindness. It is a condition in which the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin or cells stop responding to the insulin that is produced. Then glucose in the blood is not able to be absorbed into the cells of the body.(Kishore) The cells in the human body need energy in order to function. Glucose is the body's primary energy source. It is a simple sugar resulting from the digestion of foods containing carbohydrates. It circulates in the blood from the foods that are digested as a ready energy source for any cells that need it. Insulin is a hormone or chemical produced by cells in the pancreas, it is located behind the stomach. It bonds to a receptor site on the outside of cell and goes into the cell through which glucose can enter. Glucose can be saved for later use by converting to concentrated energy sources like glycogen or fatty acids. When there is not enough insulin produced , glucose stays in the blood rather entering the cells. The body will attempt to dilute the high level of glucose in the blood, which called hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia acts by drawing water out of the cells and into the bloodstream, to dilute the sugar and excrete it in the urine. People with undiagnosed diabetes to be constantly thirsty, drink large quantities of water, and urinate...

Bloom's Taxonomy of Education

...policy and practice in the history of education. Bloom’s research directed the advancement of many educational programs and provided tools for educator to help students learn. His research on education was conducted from 1940 to 1959 and focused on the relationships between methods of instruction, educational outcomes and measurement of those outcomes. Bloom’s wrote his first book in 1950 which led to the work , the “Taxonomy of Educational Objectives.” His most distinguished contribution to teaching and learning was developing a theory for teachers to provide correct instruction for their students. The revised Bloom’s Taxonomy is used as a framework for continuing education . The purpose of continuing education is to improve nurses’ skills to provide quality patient care. Nurses need to transfer her knowledge from continuing education to everyday practice. Educators can aid the process or transferring knowledge but not to acquire instructional outline. The revised Bloom’s taxonomy incorporates instructional outline into the taxonomy plan to support transfer of knowledge and helps educators to create correct instruction. The application of the research conducted on Bloom’s taxonomy on nursing education provides guidelines to teach , organize lesson plan, assess the strategies in teaching and to evaluate the strategies of teaching. The application of the research is also used to create learning objectives and instructional...

Differences in Education

...advanced degree nurses with their BSN or higher. The evidence behind having more nurses educated at a higher level is patient centered care. The differences in education between an associate degree nurse and a baccalaureate prepared nurse will be looked at thru this paper. The second item that will be addressed in this paper is how the care for patients differs between the ADN and BSN prepared nurse. Differences in education A person wants to go to school for nursing but are overwhelmed with a decision does this person obtain an associate’s degree in nursing or continue on further for a baccalaureate degree prior to entering the field of chosen study. This dilemma has been debated on for many years. The obvious difference between the two educations is the length of study. Both are able to sit for the same board exam the NCLEX at the end of study and they are both technically skilled for an entry level position. One may think then that there is really no difference in education other then the last three letters behind their name. The baccalaureate student not only studies for a longer period of time but there is an emphasis on evidence-base clinical practice and leadership within the curriculum. Numerous research studies have showed that the skill between ADN and BSN competency upon graduation, however, within a year the BSN nurse shows greater critical thinking skills, better problem solving, and the development of clinical...

Diabetes

...Diabetes DIABETES More than 3% of the world population has diabetes; diabetes is caused by lack of a hormone called Insulin, which is produced by the organ pancreas to control blood sugar (Miller, 2010). Diabetes has been regarded as one of the biggest killers in the world. There exists three types of diabetes, type one, type two and type three. The most common is diabetes mellitus (Derek LeRoith, 2004). Therefore, Diabetes can be caused by little insulin, resistance to the protein insulin or even both. This paper aims to see to research on what causes diabetes, types of diabetes, the incidence and the risk factors associated with the disease. Problems Diabetes is a condition when there is a sharp rise of sugar levels in the blood.   The body finds it difficult to deal with the high concentration of the sugar in the blood. Foods, which contain starch or carbohydrates such as, rice, bread etc and foods that taste sweet are digested in the body into glucose. The pancreas produces a hormone called insulin, which allows glucose to move into cells to be used by our bodies for energy.   When glucose levels increase above normal levels it leads to the complications of diabetes. Men and women are equally likely to suffer from diabetes, also being Asian or Afro-Caribbean, overweight, aged between 40 and 75 or having diabetes in the family can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes.   To understand...

What Is the Main Cause for Violence?

...What is the Main Cause for Violence? January 12, 2014 Victimology What is the Main Cause for Violence? Violence has been around a very long time. The first record of violence is probably the story of Cain and Abel where Cain had become jealous of his brother Abel and murdered him, thus the first act of violence. No one really knows why people choose a violent road to go down and to commit crimes but there are many theories. Some say it is how they grew up in society and the people they hang around or on the other hand people say they are simply wired from birth to be that way. My paper is a reflection of my opinion on what I think the main cause of violence is and whether or not it is biological or social and what can be done to correct it. In my opinion, I think violence stems from both biological and social stand points. Let’s just focus on the social aspect of violence first and the influences around us. Many people and I speak from experience stereotype certain individuals because of the neighborhood they live in, the color of their skin, or the company they keep. Sometimes these stereotypes can be true. For someone to be socially accepted into a group such as a gang, they have to be tuff and basically a criminal. As some kind of initiation they need to commit violence whether it’s shooting someone or robbing a store for example. I believe society puts pressures on young adults especially they have to have a certain way of life and the only way they can fit in would...

Diabetes

...wrote about diabetes for my biology research paper. I need someone to proof read for me. It is in APA style. Thank you! =) In America, the fact that fast food restaurants are located at every corner many people becomes obesity leading to huge risk factors. The various issues of unhealthy living lead to multiple life threatening diseases, such as diabetes. When people hear the news that they have been diagnosed with diabetes, it makes them feel frightened. In 2011, statistics show that in United States 25.8 million of children and adults has diabetes (American Diabetes Association, 2012). American Indians and Alaska natives have a higher percentage of adults with diabetes than other ethnicities (Collazo-Clavell et all. 2009). Diabetes is a serious life-long illness caused by high level of glucose in the blood. This condition is when the body cannot produce insulin that is located in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that moderates the blood level. Diabetes affects the process of how the body uses blood sugar (Collazo-Clavell et all. 2009). Glucose is significant since it is “the main source of fuel” (Collazo-Clavell et all. 2009). There is no cure for diabetes but there are ways to lower the risks. Although diabetes is a disorder, it can also lead to other factors such as heart attack, kidney failure, or death. A person with diabetes has to maintain a healthy lifestyle including eating the right food, exercising, controlling their blood sugar level, and be optimistic. Diabetes...

Adn vs Bsn

...Running head: ADN vs. BSN Associate’s Degree versus Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Competency Antoinette Bordeaux Grand Canyon University Professional Dynamics- 430V November 13, 2010 Associates Degree versus Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Competency A registered nurse (RN) originally graduates from one of three educational programs which include diploma, associate degree (ADN), or a baccalaureate degree (BSN) program. All three programs have similarities and differences. One similarity is that all programs are required to take the same state board exam to become license and the passing rates for all degree are all somewhat similar. Starr and Edwards, (2010) specified, “Nationally in 2009, 91% of diploma graduates, 88% of associate degree graduates and 89% of baccalaureate degree graduates passed the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt(National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2009)”. Another similarity suggestive from the statistics of the NCLEX-RN is that all three programs possess the required minimum knowledge in order to provide safe and effective care. Associate Degree History After World War II, Hood and Leddy (2010) states, “The nursing shortage increased as more hospital beds became available” (p.47). As the shortage hit hard and nurses were leaving the profession for multiple reasons it was recommended that nursing education be moved to universities and colleges rather than the hospital setting. In 1952 Mildred Montag proposed a solution to the nursing...

Unauthorized Practice of Law

...UPL Unauthorized practice of law is a crucial part of our legal system and how law is administered. Also known as, UPL, this topic deserves attention so boundaries in the legal profession can be clearly understood. My question that I raise with this topic, is UPL defined well enough or is it too strict and those that can’t afford legal help suffer for it? In the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct, it states, "A lawyer shall not practice law in a jurisdiction where doing so violates the regulation of the legal profession in that jurisdiction or assist a person who is not a member of the bar in the performance of activity that constitutes the unauthorized practice of law." What this definition indicates is that attorneys may not practice law where they are not licensed to do so and they may not assist another person in UPL. So for an attorney licensed in only one state, she/he may not practice law in another without appropriate licensure. As for another person committing UPL, this would include helping a legal assistant work outside the boundaries of their legal responsibilities as a non-lawyer professional. The goal of UPL is to protect the public from being subjected to fraudulent practice by persons not qualified to give legal counsel. In addition, when they employ legal assistants they must be cautious not to do anything less than adequately supervise their staff and ensure that UPL is not committed. Attorneys are the only ones who can give...

Alcoholics Anonymous the Truth About Alcoholism

...Whiteking.thaysha@yahoo.com Thaysha King Professor Nora Kabaji Freshman Composition Research Paper 27 March 2013 Alcoholics Anonymous the Truth about Alcoholism Alcoholism is the addiction to consuming alcoholic drinks. Just like any other addiction it is fostered by the regular consumption of alcohol. It is not wrong to have an occasional drink in a social event or to have a little wine with dinner but when it reaches to the point where the individual cannot go a day without alcohol in his system then there is a problem. Alcohol is a drug like any other but it’s the most popular and accepted drug in the entire world. It is legal to citizens above eighteen years to drink alcohol and it is very accessible to even teenagers. Consumption of alcohol is not a new thing, it has been there for centuries and many new brands are being produced every year. However, those many years ago, our fore fathers knew the restrictions when it came to taking alcohol. They did not over do it and they consumed alcohol mainly during social events hence they did not become addicted to it.  In our society today, any time is a good time to take alcohol. Teenagers, young adults, adults and even old people are all taking alcohol at an alarming rate. They are doing it oblivious to the fact that they can become addicted. Why are there so many alcoholics in the world today? How does it affect them and the people around them? What can be done to cure our society out of this vice? We answer all these questions...

Nursing Theiry Plan of Care

...nursing research evidence into practice and policy is essential for the provision of quality care. Research utilization is defined as “the systematic process of transferring research knowledge into practice for the purpose of understanding, validating, enhancing, or changing practice” and has a potential to influence attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of healthcare providers and recipients, alike (Matthew-Maich, Ploeg, Jack, & Dobbins, 2010). Most practical nursing disciplines create mechanisms of research utilization that, according to MacGuire (2006), can “clearly explicate the essential nature, meanings and components of nursing so that nurse clinicians can use this knowledge in a deliberate and meaningful way.” There are some difficulties with the process of transforming research findings into practice. Nurses may not know about the research finding, or they may find the changes to be disruptive and resist implementing them. They may not have the appropriate training or funding, or simply may not have the autonomy to apply the knowledge into their practice independently (MacGuire, 2006). When successfully implemented, research findings encourage nurses to make thoughtful and informed choices, to avoid automatic reactions based on old assumptions and practices, and to afford them ability to understand and critique research evidence in relation to their practice. Sometimes, a new idea could be rightfully rejected, based on a thoughtful implementation of research findings...

Yellow Fever Endemic to Tropical Regions of Africa and South America

...Tropical Regions of Africa and South America name University professor date Yellow Fever Yellow fever is a viral infection which is potentially fatal. Statistics kept by WHO, the World Health Organization, estimates that out of 200,000 cases of yellow fever each year, there are 30,000 deaths as a result of the infectious process (“Yellow Fever Fact,” 2010). Yellow Fever is endemic to tropical regions. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that yellow fever is endemic to 30 sub-Saharan African countries and 13 Central and South American countries. In the 1900’s research discovered that yellow fever is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and the development of a vaccine followed shortly after (Hill, 2009). Despite the development of a vaccine, today yellow fever is a serious health risk to the inhabitants of tropical South America, Africa, and to any travelers visiting these areas. This paper will discuss the infectious process of yellow fever, how yellow fever is diagnosed, and its’ signs and symptoms. Next, the pathophysiological changes caused by yellow fever will be explained. Lastly, available treatments and education to prevent yellow fever will be explored. Disease and Infectious Process The vector of the yellow fever virus is the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Meanwhile, humans and monkeys are the principle reservoirs for the virus. The process of infection starts with a female mosquito that feeds on an infected carrier of the yellow fever virus. The mosquito...

Therefore, patients should be taught the importance of following a strict diabetic diet and losing weight. In addition, research has shown that behavioral modifications are more effective than medicinal measures. For instance, healthcare providers can prescribe metformin to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes as well. However, metformin reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes less dramatically than behavioral modifications (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases,...
