I am a shoe. Hello

In the beginning, my life was cheerful. I would spend them with my best friend who shared a box with me. This was all I needed to survive. A warm, dark box. Beside that, I even had a friend to share it with. Home Sweet Home. All of a sudden, something captured my house and clawed off the roof. They kidnapped my best friend away from me. The next thing I knew, they took me too.
Before they started to do something to my friend (or to me) I managed to get one last good look at him. Seconds later, I heard a spine-chilling thump. The sound alarmed me because back when things were normal, my best friend and I would talk to our neighbors about what would happen if one of us were dropped. Someone had a theory that it would make

Short Stories

...going beyond what the title to the short story is. The short story theme I am going conduct on is “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ by James Thurber (1973). In this short story the literary elements being used is plot and symbols and the theme being full of distractions and disruption. The narrator is giving a third person point of view in sharing the thoughts of the characters. Walter Mitty the daydreamer is very humorous in the different plots of his drifting off. In the start of the story the plot, symbols, distractions, and disruptions started when the daydream started. The first daydream Mitty was a commander in an 8-engine Navy hydroplane. In this daydream he said Rev her up to 8500! When awakened by his wife driving fifty-five causing disruption and his wife saying I only go forty he was silenced. Mitty still driving through Waterbury and stopping to drop his wife off at the hairdresser, she reminded him to pick up the overshoes and to wear his gloves. Mitty put the gloves on and the second daydream followed. In this daydream Mitty was a famous surgeon who was asked to help a rich Englishman. This rich Englishman was a friend of President Roosevelt, “It’s the millionaire banker, Wellington McMillan,” said the pretty nurse. (Clugston, 2010). Walter Mitty slowly removed his gloves and said “who has the case?” Then awakened by the city parking lot attendant, he become testy and said “Back it up, Mac! And jammed on his brakes. Entering in the shoe store to get his overshoes, Mitty...

Reunion - Fame or Family?

...Essay and e-mail - Reunion A. An essay analyzing the short story This essay is going to be an analysis and interpretation of the short story ‘’Reunion’’ by John Cheever. It will begin with a summary of the short story. Afterwards the plot, the conflict and the setting will be analyzed. Then I’ll move on to the characterization, the possible surprise ending and the theme and message. Finally I will draw parallels between the short story ‘’Reunion’’ and the essay ‘’Living With Strangers’’ by Siri Hustvedt. ‘’Reunion’’ is a short story about a boy called Charlie and his last interaction with his father. Charlie was travelling by train from his grandmother’s to a cottage his mother had rented. He would be in New York for about an hour and thirty minutes while waiting for the new train and therefore he wanted to meet his father. He hadn’t seen his father for three years and Charlie was exited to see the man he looked up to again. Because of the lack of time, they couldn’t go and see the father’s club, so they had to find a restaurant in the area. They went to four restaurants and they get more or less thrown out of all four. The father in this short story was either really drunk or/and very arrogant. In all occasions he talked down to waiters or behaved bad in one way or the other. In spite of his bad behavior they managed to get a ‘’Beefeater Gibson’’ at one place. It all ended with the father going up to a newsstand, again with a bad attitude, which was the final straw for Charlie...

Ari Millen's The Tell-Tale Heart

...The short story our group chose was “Tell-Tale Heart”. We chose to set it in modern times and keep the story basically the same except for tweaks such as the use of technology. The story only has four characters, the main man that goes insane, the old man, and the two detectives that are called towards the end. The main characters name is Gunter Kroger; this character was the one I was trying to spend the most time with because he is ultimately the most important. The group’s character inspiration for him was Ari Millen from the show Orphan Black. I wanted this character to be extremely well put together and fashionable. I originally was looking at suits and business attire, but once I started exploring more I loved the look of the more business...

Paul Milenski - Tickits

...handicapped. I believe he is suffering from arrested development. Tickets are frequently given by the police or other higher authorities to an individual, who breaks the law. Tickets are generally given, when people break the Road Traffic Act or something like that. This is the way a lot of people would describe getting a ticket. But this description does not fit the way Toby writes his tickets. Toby gives tickets to random people, who he believes are breaking the rules of a well-being society. It might seem very peculiar, that Toby writes tickets for small incidents. He gives two ladies a ticket for standing in the middle of the pavement. But there is a reason why, and the quote proves this point of view – everything in Tobys life is wrong. In order to rectify things in his mind Toby writes tickets to get a healthy society. Given tickets is something in his life, which he can control. A central theme is therefore, how Toby tries to get everything around him to be right. The text “TICKITS” was written in 1978. The writer is Paul Milenski. The text is about a young chap, his name is Toby Heckler. The story deals with a serious subject regarding human relationships and the lack of order in a Toby’s life. The narrative technique is a third person narrative. The third person narrative is in this case subjective, because we are tied down to one point of view. In this story we are tied down to Toby’s point of view. Things are described from Toby’s angle. The text is a short story. It is...

Once Upon a Time

...2013 Once Upon A Time I am a lifelong Disney enthusiast; I know everything there is to know about Disney movies, theme parks, and culture. Some people would say that I am obsessed, but I just think of myself as a huge admirer. At the young age of six, I took my first trip to Walt Disney. A big part of who I am is my love for Disney culture. From the day that my mom put in Toy Story, my enthusiasm for Disney spread like fire and, once kindled, blew into a flame. As a kid, I was curious to see, learn, and do just about everything. When I watched movies like Aladdin or Jungle Book, I was captivated by the great characters, the songs, and the exotic, faraway lands the movies introduced. My mom would play Aladdin, and I would watch the entire movie, then go to my neighbor’s house across the street, and go to my friend Ian’s house, and tell him, “We need to go explore!” I was convinced that if Ian and I walked far enough, we would come across a desert like in Aladdin, or a mysterious jungle with singing monkeys. Watching Disney movies really sparked my enthusiasm for exploring and for traveling. As soon as I started high school, I g heavily involved myself in foreign language and student clubs like Student Council and Science Club. Spanish introduced me to other parts of the world, which I found appealing because of my urge to see other places. My open-mindedness, curiosity, and enthusiasm for travel can be linked to my early interests in characters that I found appealing, like Wendy...

Strobist Lighting 101.Pdf

...Strobist Lighting 101 (all text by David Hobby, taken from http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html, version 05/06/07) Intimidated by the idea of off-camera lighting? Don't be. We are pretty much starting from scratch, so no worries. The first posts will be about what kind of gear you will need to do the minimalist strobe thing. When we are done having our way with your wallet (remembering that light gives you far more bangfor-the-buck than does fast glass or the latest digital camera or 300/2.8) we'll move into basic technique. And after that, we'll keep it going with periodical essays and ideas on how to improve (or refresh) your lighting ability. When you've worked your way through the basics of designing your light kit and learning how to use it, make a point to browse some of the examples in the "On Assignment" section. Those will be updated constantly, too. So keep checking back. You will likely have some questions along the way. Sadly, it is not possible for me to take the time to personally answer all of the one-to-one lighting questions that pop up. So try to resist asking them in the comments section. The only people reading this behind you are the people who are, well, behind you. You will find the one-to-one knowledge bank you seek in the Strobist Group on Flickr. There, you can ask away and get the diversity of response that you need. These are the lighting grad students, so to speak. They know this stuff, and are very enthusiastic about sharing...

The Lovesong Of J Alfred Prufrock Comparison

...Upon first encounter, modernist authors Virginia Woolf’s 1919 short story Kew Gardens and T.S Eliot’s poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock would seem to be vastly different save for their close publication dates. The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a dramatic monologue – a melancholy affair, dealing with the social grievances of its titular character. On the other hand, Kew Gardens is a text easy to get lost in despite its short length. Though it can be easily interpreted as a testament to the beauty of nature and diversity among humans, there are other implications under the surface of Woolf’s writing. The two texts share an integral theme that forms their common ground: isolation and its function in society both at large and in the individual’s mind. What buoys these concepts and generally enriches each work...

Henry Sy and John Gokongwei

...Case Background Henry Sy and John Gokongwei were both born very poor. This situation, one may conclude, served as a blessing for the two most celebrated entrepreneurs in the Philippines on their journey to wealth.                 Shoeless and with only clothes on his back, Henry Sy started his entrepreneurial career by tending at his father’s sari-sari store in Cebu. But Henry dreamed of something big for his future. He dreamed of having his own business to provide him enough money. In 1945, he put up a small shoe store in Carriedo, Quiapo. From then on, that humble shoe store became Shoemart (commonly known as “SM”). Since there was a constant pouring of capital back into this venture, he then expanded into textiles and household goods and was then opening outlets to selected parts of the country, centering at the Metropolis.                 On the other hand, John Go (“kongwei” meaning “bright” was suffixed later to his name later) started his road to success by hawking wares in Cebu. This led to his dream of building his own retailing kingdom. He first started by trading and manufacturing corn starch in 1955 and has soon expanded into supplying groceries and animal foodstuffs in bulk. Later, he ventured also in textiles, banking and real estate, hotels and shopping complex developments.                 The abrupt expansion of the enterprises of the two business tycoons marked the start of a period of transition for the business empire built over the past three decades by...

When the students are given the same textbooks when the library was temporary closed, it significally changed the way the students learned. Initially, the students loved learning but once the students received the same books other 5th grade classroom were receiving, they complained. Esmé uses creative approaches throughout her teachings to envoke the love of learning. She extended it by creating an afterschool club alongside other teachers. She also created an assembly in which the author of Addy, Connie Porter, came to visit. Addy was a significant story to the children of Chicago since it talked about a black character wanting to be free in a Civil War. It is similar to the teaching from “Freedom Writers” when she gave students a book that students can relate...

It is heavily rooted in social media – supporters share experiences by Tweeting the #withoutshoes hashtag. AOL, a Simply Measured customer, partnered with TOMS to build online momentum leading up to 4/10. For us data geeks, AOL’s use of social media analytics was particularly interesting – both as a rally call for consumers and a as way to message results internally and externally. Looking at the data from these efforts serves as great case study for measuring and communicating social media analytics. Using Social Media Metrics as a Rally Call AOL created excitement around a social media metric – reach – asking consumers to help distribute the #withoutshoes messages to over 1,000,000 people before April 10th. By reporting reach each day of the campaign, AOL set a collective goal and communicated the impact to participants. At Simply Measured, we tend to think about social media programs like a megaphone. You put content in and when things work well, your messages get amplified. In this instance, AOL aligned their campaign goals around this amplification in a way that compelled consumers...

Terry Gilliam Brazil Analysis

...Tom Padanilam 3/11/13 676107038 It’s Only a State of Mind The 1980’s saw an emergence of more politically, socially, and economically conscious films. This is very apparent in Terry Gilliam’s film, Brazil, which portrays a dystopian, futuristic society that is dominated by a totalitarian government. I believe that Gilliam’s use of intertexuality, mise-en-scene, storytelling, and subversive depiction of society is what makes Brazil a cult film. The plot revolves around Sam Lowry, a low-level government employee who often dreams about being a hero, escaping reality, and saving a beautiful woman. One day he finds a woman who looks identical to the one in his dreams, but she is an alleged rebel and wanted by the government. Sam tries to flee with her, but through a series of obscure twists and turns he ends up losing her and his own sanity. There are numerous similarities and references to George Orwell’s 1984 in Brazil. Both are set in a futuristic setting as imagined by people living in earlier periods, both feature a totalitarian government that reigns over its people, and as a result of the government a nightmarish dystopian society is created. It is also important to note that the two also offer no possibility of society changing or improving in any way. However, Orwell shows the physical and emotional effects of a totalitarian government, while Gilliam focuses his critique on the mindless consumerist society it produces. There are also various cinematic references that...

...tales. When we were young, we ask our parents to tell us stories. People are not sure why fairy tales are so interesting and why every children love them. While it is entertaining, it is also moral lesson to young children. They learn from the fairy tales about good and evil. They learn how to distinguish good and evil, wise and foolish, and moral and immortal. Children learn many lessons from the characters of fairy tales and it is very interesting to see that they love heroes in the fairy tales and do not like the bad guys in the stories. When I was thinking about the research topic, the one thing pulled my attention was why there are villains in almost all fairy tales. It is very interesting to think that all fairy tales have villains. In this paper I am going to talk about who the villains in the story are, why authors talk about villains in their stories and what readers learn from them. I will use mostly about fairy tale villains such as my favorite fairy tale’s villain, Cinderella’s stepmother. When we read the stories, we can tell who the villain in the story is. They are usually described as stepmothers, witches, monsters, sneak, thief, robber and traits. For example, in the Cinderella story, Lady Tremaine is a villain. In the article “Top 10 Most Evil Disney villains”(Antonia) the author described the Lady Tremaine as self centered and wicked person. She physiologically abuses Cinderella. When I see the characters I listed above, they all are wicked. It is easy to see...
