...“I Am” Paper Liberty University Misty M. Hart BIBL 323 – B03 Professor C. Harry Harriss October 12, 2015 Introduction In the gospel of John there are seven statements that are recorded known as the “I am… ” statements. The words “I AM”, I think, can be considered two of the most powerful words and the reason I say this is because depending on what is said after those words can determine who the person is or isn’t that is speaking these words. When Jesus spoke these words about 2,000 years ago they had some strong meaning and usually they upset a lot of people in those days. Jesus was not just an ordinary man speaking these words, He was God. This is how Jesus affirmed His deity by applying Himself to the statements of Jehovah which was “I am that I am” in the Old Testament (Exod. 3:14-15; John 4:26; 18:5-6). The Jews hated Him because by using these words, Jesus was claiming to be equal to the God of the Old Testament and they did not agree with that. I Am Paper Out of those seven “I AM” statements recorded in John I would like to discuss the one found in John Chapter 14. In this chapter Jesus tells His disciples that, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 NLT). When Jesus had spoken this He was in the upper room with His disciples and it was just after Passover service. Jesus knew where He was going to be heading, so He was preparing His disciples for the things that lied ahead and His departure. His...

...BIBL323 “I Am” Paper The Gospel of John states seven statements that Jesus proclaimed, which we today know as “I am….” statements. These seven statements relate to the seven objects described and placed in the Israelite tabernacle during the Exodus. Dr. Elmer Towns, author of The Gospel of John: Believe and Live, states that the “I am…” statement is identification with the Old Testament deity; therefore he is claiming to be there, the Jews, God. Jesus makes a prophetic statement about His Deity and resurrection Leon Morris correctly states, When Jesus used the "I AM" construction he was speaking in the style of deity." And, "There is general agreement among John scholars that this kind of language is a significant pointer to what John is telling us about the person of Jesus." The first time Jesus made this self-existent claim without explanation or without the use of a metaphor was in John 4:26. While speaking to the Samaritan women at the well in this scripture verse, Jesus told her things about herself that no one knew before displaying his deity. The woman questions who Jesus truly is.; The Deity of Christ is examined by the woman when she states to Jesus in John 4:25, “The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He who is called the Christ (the Anointed One); and when He arrives, He will tell us everything we need to know and make it clear to us.” The woman is making reference to two Old Testament scriptures found in Isaiah. The first one is Isaiah 45:22...

...seven statements that Jesus states, which are readily known as the “I am…” statements. There is an eighth claim that was also made by Jesus about Himself; when He simply states, “I am.” Theologian Elmer Towns states in his textbook, (Elmer Towns) “This is a statement of identification with Old Testament deity. Christ is implying, “I am…I am,” the self-existent One. He is claiming to be their God. The Old Testament is pointing to the coming One. Many scriptures tell that someone is coming. Who is coming? Could it be the Messiah? The people of John’s time were looking, searching, hoping for the One to come. Ray Stedman states in his commentary (Ray Stedman) “In John's day, people were stirred by the fact that John the Baptist had appeared. They asked him, "Are you the Christ?" He said, "No, but he is coming after me," and when Jesus began to preach up and down the hills of Judea and Galilee, men were saying everywhere, "Is this the One? Is this the Messiah?" The first time Jesus made this self-existent claim without explanation or without the use of a metaphor is found in John 4:26. Jesus was speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well in this scripture verse. Jesus being Deity had been telling her things about herself that no one knew. The exchange between the woman and Jesus is very telling. The Deity of Christ is examined by the woman when she states to Jesus in John 4:2, “The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He who is called the Christ (the Anointed...

...University I AM PAPER “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE.” Craig Hardin BIBL 160-BO2 The Gospel of John February 22, 2015 In the research for the writing of this paper, I began reading a book that my grandfather read as he was studying at Carson Newman University after his ordination to preach the Gospel. In the book entitled, John’s Witness to Jesus, it states in speaking of Jesus: “in each figure of speech Jesus unfolded fresh truth about himself.” There are seven “I AM’S” in the book of John that could be written about. I have chosen to write concerning Jesus and the comparison that he made to himself as the bread. One of the most miraculous happenings of the Book of John is the miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand when there seemed to not be enough food to go around. Douglas Connelly writes concerning Jesus and his miracles in John; “These miracles were not performed simply to alleviate human suffering or to meet human needs; John called them signs. Like signs pointing to the right road, Jesus’ miracles pointed to the truth of Jesus’ claim to be the Son of God.” Could we imagine what it would have been like during this time in history and to also have possibly have been a part of it as well? Gregg Matte reminds us: “In the fourth miracle-the only miracle found in all Gospel accounts-Jesus shows compassion for the people by filling their stomachs and opening their hearts. “ The Reverend Donald McCorkindale said something interesting in an article I read for this paper: “When...

...“I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE” Denise Wall BIBL 323-D08 12/10/2012 We are often searching for answers to find out who Jesus was or what His teachings really meant. John includes eight different situations in which Jesus gives what are known as the “I Am” statements. Instead of continuing to simply wonder about who Jesus is, we can take an in depth look into the “I Am” statements that Jesus made while He was here on earth. Conclusions can be drawn by looking at the statements Jesus makes and looking into what they mean. He uses an emphatic “I Am” to bring out important teachings about his person. Most of these statements are known by Christians. The first of these eight sayings, and the one in which this paper will focus on, is taken from John 6:35 when Jesus says “I am the bread of life, the one who comes to me shall not hunger, the one who believes in me shall never thirst.” This is probably one of the most well known of the “I Am” statements, partially because of the events that came just before it. It is important to include that one of the sign miracles precedes this ‘I Am” statement. It is the people’s desire for more food that sets up the sermon given by Jesus the day after this sign is given. The fourth sign is the feeding of the 5,000. Jesus and His disciples are on a mountain when a group of people begins walking toward them because they had seen the signs he performed. Jesus asked Philip where they could get food for the people to eat, although Jesus knew what was...

...throughout the novel I Am Malala, is possibly the most important issue, next to education, debated during the course of the book. When the story begins the author Malala Yousafzai recounts the experience of her being shot in the head for standing up for girls’ education. People were trying to silence progressive women however they could. Another instance is the narrator from “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who was never given proper medical attention and therefore suffered a nervous breakdown. Novels imbued with messages expressing the unfair treatment of women are based on facts and they do not have overly joyous endings. Malala faces the struggles of being overpowered a male-dominant society while she tries to prove her worth. When her home was overrun by the Taliban and girls were removed from schools,...

...Inspiration comes in different forms to different people. For a photographer, inspiration may come to them in the form of the sun rising over the ocean. For an author, it may be held in the single game changing sentence that could bring tears to the eyes of a war hardened veteran. However, for me, inspiration comes in the form of a teenage girl from the Swat Valley in Pakistan, and her name is Malala. In her book, I Am Malala, Malala Yousafzai details her life starting from the beginning in a small Middle Eastern village and ending in present day Birmingham, England. She highlights the important things: her struggles, her triumphs, and her family, and how they have all shaped her and motivated her to keep pushing the societal norms and continue to fight for the education of people (more specifically, women) all over the world. Even today, for her courageous and to some, outrageous, deeds, she and her family face threats from the Taliban for what she has done and will continue to do. To many, Malala Yousafzai is a symbol of fighting for what you believe in no matter how bad the situation may get and a...

...I Am Malala Malala is strong hearted girl that will never back down without a fight. Malala was shot for standing up for female education in her hometown of Swat Valley, Pakistan. Even after getting shot, she still stood up and spoke out about neglecting female education. A lot of people who would have gone what she went through would have backed down and gave up on their teachings, but Malala didn’t. She kept on spreading her beliefs and her teachings on what she felt were supposed to be right. I wonder if more girls will stand up and speak out on neglecting their rights to education, or will they just go along with the rules and traditions that their accustomed to and let Malala do this all alone. A lot of people don’t stand up for what they believe in so they sit back and let things happen. Malala shouldn’t have been the only girl to stand up in her hometown but also other women and men as well. It takes a community and a large group of people to come together in order to fix a problem so severe like what she had to do all by herself. If you believe in something take action and defend your belief and let people know how you feel. Don’t just sit there in the dark and like nothing is happening. What type of change will you bring if just sitting there? You need to stand up and speak out. There are a lot of things that goes on that we just let happen....

...I am Taoism, also known as Daoism. I am considered both an indigenous Chinese religion and philosophy due to the “diversity of Taoist belief”. My philosophical side embraces the idea that death is the process to depart “to the Tao” and its practice area is unbounded. My religious side emphasizes more on “spirits and fitness” as a way to obtain immortality and imposes certain rules. The root word in my name is Tao, which means “way”, is the central harmony. Tao is “part of everything” yet “greater than all things”. It refers to the road extending in one direction. Tao is not a substance nor can it be perceived. It is often described as “formless and nameless”. You could say it is a system of guidance. Tao is not God nor should it be worshipped, it is the origin of all things. Although I include several deities, they are...

...I believe that a person is shaped by their experiences and the people around them. When someone thinks of a person from the Midwest, the person is usually said to have a friendly personality; however, not all experiences or company that is kept is good. For example, an experience in my life that has been very impactful would be considered a tragedy. At a young age, I was forced to grow up and take on the responsibilities of an adult. At the time, I did not see the good in having to carry the burdens of a mother and homemaker, but those lessons I learned, how to wash clothes, clean a house, get a child ready for school, make dinner, will forever be with me. Not just the lesson itself, but how they affected what I thought about and how they made me feel is a part of who I am as a person forever....
