...| It Is My Responsibility To Be A College Success | What I Need To Do To Achieve Success As A College Student | | | There is a correlation between personal responsibility and college success because a student has to be willing to put forth the effort required to achieve a successful college career, develop relationships with instructors, and choose what type of success they want to have throughout their college profession. | When thinking about the phrase, personal responsibility, several different definitions come to my mind. It means taking accountability for my own welfare. Personal responsibility can signify that I am responsible for the choices that I make in my life. I can go on and on about different ways that this phrase can be interpreted. However, I think it would be best if I began by breaking down the phrase into two parts, and deciphering each word. Let us start with the word, personal. Merriam-Webster defines personal, in its adjective form, as “done in person without the intervention of another”. The word, responsibility means “the state at which one is held accountable for one’s conduct and obligations”. [ (Encyclopedia Britannica Company, 2012) ] If we were to take both of these definitions and combine them, you would get my definition of personal responsibility. A person demonstrates personal responsibility when s/he is liable for any actions that they perform, and any choices that they choose to make. This definition not only places responsibility...

... Freedom of Choice “Between stimulus and response, man has the freedom to choose” (Frankl, 2002). Personal responsibility is recognizing that I have the freedom and control to choose my actions and accept the consequences that come from these actions. These actions can be as simple as determining what my attitude will be for the day all the way to choosing to have a great, motivating, and inspirational life. Covey (1989) explained, making the choice to choose our response we powerfully could affect the results. Personal responsibility links to everything in my life, my family success, my professional success, and my educational success. In this instance, personal responsibility’s associations with the actions I must take to be successful in college are show initiative, be proactive, manage my time effectively, and create effective habits. Initiative There are multiple methods and attributes to ensure my educational success, taking the initiative to choose to be a successful student seems to be the first key point. A study performed by Zimmerman and Martinez-Pons (1986), comparing advanced students and lower performing students found that the lower performing students often give reactive statements such as “I just do what my teacher tells me,” compared to the academically achievers that use statements such as, “If I’m having difficulty motivating myself to complete my homework, I just work harder.” The findings indicated a lack of personal initiative in the lower...

...human beings, we are responsible for our own actions and personal responsibility is the key to leading a successful life. To be successful in school it is important to know our weaknesses and our strengths and taking the responsible route by asking for help when it is needed. According to Albert Einstein “Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment, and learn again to exercise his will – his personal responsibility”. (Albert Einstein). If people lead an honest healthy lifestyle they will be successful in life and if they choose to study hard and attend class regularly, they will be successful academically. If you work hard in your career you will be successful. Responsibility means making the right choice even when it is not the popular choice. Personal responsibility applies to all avenues of life, including personal, academic, and employment. When I was 17 and first joined the military, a word I had never heard before was introduced to me, “Integrity.” Integrity was explained to me as “doing the right thing when no one is looking.” I have built my personality both personally and professionally, around this meaning. I practice this in my academic life as well, so that I can complete assignments and time lines within my coursework. I know what I need to do and make time so that I can do it. ...College: Society Demands It AP Seminar 2018 Word Count: 1,305 INTRODUCTION “Where do you want to go to college?” This question has become increasingly more frequent in modern American society. “Why?” one might ask. The answer is complicatedly simple: society has deemed that without a secondary education, success is unattainable. As a result of this, the teenage community feels obligated to attend a university, regardless of the future implications or their own desires. That being said, college opens a lot of doors, some that would otherwise be left closed. In the minds of many teenagers across America, their decision to attend college will be the determining factor on the level of success they can reach. There are obvious benefits...

...College Skills Final Essay My personal definition of success is to have what I need to make it through one day at a time with the food, clothing, shelter, and love that is needed to survive. Making it through one day at a time requires these elements in order to move on. In order to obtain food, clothing, and shelter, I need the ability to generate an income of some sort. The amount of income I can generate is dependent upon the effort that I put into finding the perfect job, and meeting any goals that I set for myself, mainly my short term goal of receiving a college degree. The steps required for me to achieve personal success are many. Accepting personal responsibility will be one of those steps. I have to accept responsibility for the actions that I choose to take. If I choose to not study for an exam, or I choose to not seek out additional help to learn how to solve a difficult Calculus problem, then I am the only person that I can blame if I receive a grade that is less than an A. I have to accept personal responsibility for choices that I make not only in college but also in my place of employment. I initially started my college journey due to being terminated from my last place of employment. I was terminated due to a decision that I chose to make. From the time I made that decision, I accepted what I did with a clear conscious because I knew that what I did was morally and spiritually right. I look back with no regrets, even to this day when I find obtaining employment...

I understand college will be difficult, but I will persevere through it. I am always up for a challenge. I want to become an athletic trainer, and I will need to get a master’s degree. ...simplify college success. I. Learning to maintain personal responsibilities, simplifies college success. Once a student takes control of his personal responsibilities, he can learn to maintain them and make college successful. To define personal responsibility is accepting the result of your actions instead of blaming others for them. In other words personal responsibility is comparable to accountability. Which is defined as “the quality or state of being accountable; especially: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions”. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/accountability). Chances are most of the students are already on track for success. Personal Responsibilities are the decisions students make, to live up to their own ideas and expectations. They are thoughts and perceptions of how the world should be. These responsibilities add morals and values throughout life. As students discover new information these ideas and expectations will change. They can either help the student grow by making his thoughts and perceptions stronger. Or have the opposite effect and make him change his mind completely. They are the reasons for students’ success or failure. This information will help strengthen his thoughts and perceptions. He must take action to become successful. This can be something as simple as him paying bills on time or as difficult as balancing work, school and family. When it comes down to it being successful is all about...

...is extremely important to all of the college students, especially for people who are sophomores. Nowadays for the students, there are several factors that influence student’s decision. They have to consider money, family, and interests. I think the most two important factors are parental and students. I also believe there are some advantages and some disadvantages about those factors. Parental influence is the first factor in choosing a major. The reason why parents are the most influential factor is because most children will follow their parents’ orders. For my opinion, I think it may be harmful idea to follow what your parents say. I think it all depends on the students’ personalities. For example, if a student’s goal is to become a lawyer, but this student’s parents want this student to become a doctor, then this might be a problem within this student’s family. The reason is because no matter which choice that the student chooses, this student will still need to work diligently on his choice. The disadvantage of follow parents’ orders is you might regret their decision someday in the future. For instance, if a student follows parents’ expectation to become a doctor, then when this student finds a doctor’s job, this person might feel remorse everyday due to it is not the job that this student wants. Therefore, we should all follow our goal and dream. Interest is the second factors that affect students’ decision. Some students choose their major by their interest. This is...

...people to be successful in college they have to understand what personal responsibility means to them. Personal responsibility may mean something different for each person, so it is important to take the time to conduct a self-assessment. An easy way to conduct a self-assessment is to define what personal responsibility means to you, evaluate how personal responsibility will affect your college success, and create a preliminary plan based on personal responsibility to achieve your goal. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a famous poet and essayist once said “The future belongs to those who prepare for it.” The following is a self-assessment I have conducted to better prepare me for college success. Defining Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility is taking responsibility for our actions. We have a responsibility to ourselves, and those we care about. There comes a time in life when we have to decide what the right thing to do is, and reap the rewards of our decision or confront the consequences. All too often people choose to take the road most traveled because it has been paved and painted for them. I have found that taking the road less traveled or making the right decision is often harder at the time. However, making the right decision is easier than having to correct the errors that resulted from trying to avoid responsibility. Personal Responsibility and College Success Visioning the light and the end of the tunnel is the first step in being successful in college. Attending...

...can lead to a happier, more productive, successful life and career. The sooner individuals accept this, the sooner you will begin to make changes that lead to a happier and more productive life and career. Accepting that each individual is responsible for ones capability in life is essential. Personal responsibility is an individual’s capability to respond for their actions and circumstances of life. Personal responsibility to me is having a back bone, recognizing that individuals are the only person responsible for your outcome in life. Individuals usually find themselves falling back into the mind frame of blaming other for their mistakes or failures. Individuals tend to blame their parents, siblings, spouses co-worker, boss, and society for their failure when in reality they are responsible for their actions. “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands” this quote from Anne Frank (2012) that describes how one must take charge of their actions and not blame others. The further we enter into adulthood the more responsibility we will have to take on, which I believe is what Anne Frank was referring to. With more personal responsibility comes more freedom, which means making our own choices that will affect our future life and career. College success and personal responsibility go hand in hand. In order for a student to be successful in college they must take on new challenges and be...

...Mario Talavera English 1A Often times we see articles on the internet about college education and how important it is to get one, what are the majors that are most likely to give you the higher paycheck, degrees with the higher and lower unemployment rate, we see degrees that will give you a better chance to pay back all of the loans at the end of graduation, but also the ones the are on the opposite side of the spectrum. Reading all these reports online can either help you or make it even more difficult to decide for the type of degree you want to go for, some students prefer to go for careers that will give them the most money over following their real passion, only because they feel they have better chances of having more success and financial stability, but there’s one thing that a lot of people can agree on, that getting a college education can increase your chances at success and you’re more likely to achieve excellence and grow at any type of job. But what is success or how do we define it ? Sucesss can have various different meanings according to people, to some it may mean going to the college of their dreams and eventually getting that “perfect” job that they’ve always wanted, driving a fancy car and being able to go on vacation every year, and not having to worry about paying bills because you make enough money to cover those expenses. While for other people, success just means maybe getting married and having your own house, waking up every morning...

...it can be assumed the current generation is in a dilemma. Personal responsibility is the act of being accountable for one’s actions and the consequences thereof. Personal responsibility is essential to success because it can make an individual superior to his or her competitors, it allows one to resolve personal obstacles efficiently, and it ultimately results in a better lifestyle. “You are the person with the most power to affect your life. You are the one who decides how to feel about what you are experiencing. You are the one who gets to choose differently. Do you choose success?” (Johnson-Hughes, 2011). To be successful, one must have the ability to be better than his or her competitors. In a survey conducted by Eric L. Dey and associates, the first finding was that “students and campus professionals strongly agree that personal and social responsibility should be a major focus of a college education” (Association of American Colleges and Universities, 2008). Personal responsibility is the most obvious way to compete with others. Being punctual, maintaining proper hygiene, educating ones’ self, and completing tasks in an efficient and timely manner are a few examples of qualities possessed by those responsible for themselves. The unemployment rate as of October 21, 2011 is 9.1% according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Bureau of labor statistics, 2011). The current status of the economy has made competition tougher than ever. With limited jobs...

...if I don’t have a college education in the required field. Another reason education is important is because it will give me better knowledge. Also I will learn how to be more responsible for myself which is important in life. Having a good education will improve my chances of having a good paying career. Without a career I wouldn’t be able to afford to have a place to live because I would have a hard time paying my bills. I will also have more opportunities in advancement. With a higher education I can work where I want and start higher up. My life would be more fulfilling and rewarding because I would have a career and the pay would be rewarding. College will give me a better knowledge of things. For one I will be able to work better with others because I will have to work with people more often. Therefore I will have more experience to communicate with people. Having more knowledge will also give me better problem solving skills because in college you have to work harder and study more. I will be able to take on greater task in life because a good education will grant a better chance at functioning better as a whole. Being in college will teach me responsibility. I have a lot more freedom to choose the classes to take to better my chances of getting the career I want. Having more responsibility means that I won’t be able to get as much help. ...Cecelia Jackson Humanties 2250-112 09/21/2012 When I first walked in the classroom I knew I was doing the right thing by attending college. I was always told by my parents and teachers growing up how important it was to attend college. They would explain to me that was the only way I could get a good job or be successful in life. A good job provides good pay, good benefits, health care and other opportunities. In addition, more disposable income to spend for hobbies, leisure time activities, and vacations. On the other hand, sometimes the futures we have planned do not turn out how we expect it to. We just may not get the job we hoped to get after college. We could waste four years of time in college and decide maybe that was not the correct route for me. Today the economy is so bad the job you are looking for may not have any openings. Then you start to question yourself was my teachers and parents wrong? Is their other ways to be successful than going to college? Is their other ways to score a good paying job? Then getting a college degree is not necessary, because you can get a job with a trade and still be successful in life. I have several certificates that I use and I make an ok living. Sometimes one can go into business for themselves and be successful. Take pucherie as an example, She was a whore, a good whore who made her money and was proud of what she did. I am pretty sure it did not take a college degree for her to be that way. But it is not good to not have...
