...essay There are many ways one can do to contribute to the society. Some use their intelligence to further advance society; others may volunteer their time to help. These steps all take part in making the world a better place, however there aren’t many people who possess these qualities, but I believe that I do. I think that I deserve this honor and this chance to become a part of the National Honors Society because I have worked very hard to get there. Over the past years as a student, I believed that I have demonstrated leadership and character. I will use the skills I gain from my education to help those in need. Through this paper I will prove that I am qualified for a program as prestigious as the National Honors Society I can consider myself as a role model for students at my school because since the beginning of the year until now, I have excellent grades and have been involved in many school activities. Not only do I work very hard to achieve my goals and challenge myself, but I learn to maintain a positive attitude even after my failures. My G.P.A has never gone below a 3.7. I have also received the Honor Roll every year since middle school. One of the best ways I love to express myself through creating and accomplishing challenges and showing honesty towards my family, teachers, and peers. I feel accomplish when I help others solve problems. Part of my requirements is to use my skills to help people that need it. I would like for everyone to receive an inspiring reward...

...Throughout my childhood, I took life way too easy. I never really found school to be much important in life when compared to the football or baseball games that came on TV. Yet, I still worked really hard, finishing my homework each night, but I never really found true success, like getting all A’s in a school year. I was always jealous of my younger brother who never got below a 100% on anything that he did. He finished second in a law day contest in the state, and achieved high success (perfect scores) on the NJ ASK. On the other hand, I was really lazy. I got honor roll sometimes, but this wasn’t good enough. A lot of cousins didn’t really think I was going to succeed academically in life. I always thought to myself, I’m going to get that high honor roll next year, but sadly I kept on being hesitant, procrastinated all the time, and got even more sad....

...Dear National Honor Society Faculty Council Members, I have written this rebuttal letter, in regard to not being accepted into the National Honor Society. When I first had found out that I had not made it into NHS, I was very surprised, and upset. After reading the letter numerous times, I could only conclude that something regarding social media had led to the notion and determination of a lack of character. I figured it would be best to know what exactly the violation was, and what the steps would be to fix the situation, by writing this letter. I went in and talked to Mr. Kraus for a good twenty minutes, and was able to further understand the situation. I had never given social media a second thought, and as an honor roll student involved...

...I strongly believe that I have fulfilled my duties as an adolescent, a leader, a scholar and a volunteer, to be accepted into national honor society. This has been something I've strived for since the beginning of my high school career. This organization helps better the community and all students involved, and hope to be able to set an example for other students like the current National Honor Society members have for me. I've worked very hard to get myself where I am, academically, today. I've carried a minimum grade point average of 92 or higher these past few years. My grades are my top priority. After all colleges looked at your grades the most. Helping the community is one way I like to busy myself. This past year, I've completed the...

...Honor is one of those words that can widely be left up for the individual to determine. For some it could just mean someone who is looked up to. Others may see it as someone who is respected or famous in their such field or profession. Merriam Webster dictionary, alone, has over ten different meanings of the word “honor” on just its website, ranging from several different means of honor. I think that honor can have a multitude of meanings, especially depending on the subject or task at hand. A player could receive an honorable mention as an award for excelling in their sport or just showing good team respect and sportsmanship. Honor roll and distinguished honor roll certificates are given to those students who go above and beyond the expectations...

...to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.” These quotes is from my muse Eleanor Roosevelt; you can get an insight into who I truly am through this quote. I can pull out many experiences to show how I have gained these qualities. Most of all I have proven these qualities through the activities that I am involved in including, National Honors Society (NHS), Future Farmers of America (FFA), band, choir, basketball, 4-H president, and volleyball manager. I have developed a strong work ethic through 4-H and NHS, in these two activities the members have great opportunities to help others. Ever since I was a young I wanted my career to be something that helps others. In my career choice as a prosthetist and orthotist, I would be about to fulfill that need every day. My goal is to help my patients see this as positive as possible. I can see myself being very happy in this career, and I will not give up until I am successful. Persistence is the key to succeed in anything and I will accomplish my goal if I set it, no matter the size of the goal. When I was younger, I had great role models, my father and mother, my father worked two...

...American society. A lot of what DADT stood for, that homosexuals weren’t deserving of equal treatment in the military, was also present in other facets of life such as marriage or protection. Clinton passed the defense of marriage act, around the time of DADT, which specified that marriage was between a man and a woman and states didn’t have to recognize the gay marriages of another state. The correlation between marriage and the military was that one of the argument sused against homosexuals in the military, that it would demean the integrity and morality of the military, was also used against the idea of gay marriage, which was said to possibly ruin the integrity and morality of marriage. Another aspect of society that mirrored DADT was the fight for protection from discrimination for homosexuals. Romer v. Evans reached the Supreme Court in 1996 which struck down an amendment in the Colorado constitution that said that gays didn’t deserve equal protection under the law and claimed they would be “special rights” (cite). This phrase “special rights” was used as an argument for DADT as well. In Stephen Snyder-Hill’s book Soldier of Change, he talks about how while he sent in a question to the republican national debate about if they would implement DADT...

...Donald Chiara Professor Brown English 102 6/19/15 6 Inches of Glass Looking back at stimulating memories of your childhood gives you a sense of euphoria. You’re spending a Sunday evening at your grandparent’s house enjoying a comforting meal. Your grandfather is wearing his favorite watch that you have grown accustomed of seeing. You associate this watch as an extension of his arm. That watch is no longer an impractical piece of jewelry to you, it is ingrained with memories. How would you feel if the only time you can now view that watch is during business hours through thick glass? Allowing museums to possess Native American artifacts infringes on that culture’s right to preserve their heritage. First I will explain who has the right to ownership; second I will analyze what the artifacts in the museum symbolize, and finally assess the extent to which their heritage is being stolen. Ownership can be defined as the legal right to possession. This is not always the person who actually possesses the item, rather the person that should possess the item. In 1990 the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was passed. The act states: federal agencies and institutions that receive federal funding to return Native American "cultural items" to lineal descendants and culturally affiliated Indian tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations. Cultural items include human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. (1) Although...

...Turning a blind eye to the biases of modern society, death directly impacts everyone on all seven continents, disregarding race, religion, financial status, or any other category that can define a human. Of the 55.3 million people who succumb to death annually, most are disposed of in conjunction with their beliefs while alive, or by the wishes of their next of kin based off cultural customs. Yet, within the United States, medical examiners, or forensic pathologists have no obligation to act in accordance with these customs if the state has “sufficiently compelling interest.” (Renteln, 2001). With the utilization of medicalized postmortem examinations, many religious minorities see these invasive procedures as the mutilation of the corpse that...

I have been writing my personal code for several weeks, and I am very excited about the finished product. I think that I will hold myself more accountable for living my life according to this code if it is public information. I realize that it is a little long, especially for a blog post, but I thought I would share anyways. Enjoy! Background My personal values act as a basis for distinguishing between right and wrong and thus, determine my daily actions and emotions. ...people who are in love is a serious problem. We love who we want. You can’t change who you fall in love with. Opponents argue that is against their religion—marriage should be between a man and a woman so that they can pro-create. However, Evan Wolfson, from a gay-advocacy group called Freedom to Marry, argues that “every religion can decide for itself whether to perform or honor any marriage…but no religion should be able to dictate who gets a civil marriage license” (Wolfson). This country was founded and has continued to develop the concept of separation of church and state. It is up to individual religions whether to acknowledge same-sex marriages. However, it is the nation’s responsibility to acknowledge all unions, instead of discriminating couples based on their sex. To infringe upon couples right to civil marriage is a violation of human rights. Gay people, who are in love, have the right to commit to each other and have it legally recognized by the United States government. Banning an issue doesn’t make it go away. The American Constitution said that everyone deserves the same, equal rights that include gay people. So banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Making this issue illegal is also a form of discrimination. Homophobic ridicule and abuse gay citizens, and gay teenagers are scared to go to school because of the excessive bullying and teasing. And gays are just being themselves! We are all created equal, so why can't we all just...

...SHEIKH ZAYED ISLAMIC CENTRE University of Karachi “ISLAM & SCIENCE ASSIGNMENT” Submitted to: Dr. Umar Hayat Asim Submitted by: Ariba Inayet Roll# 05 Date: September 10, 2015 Islam: Islam is one of the largest religions in the world with over 1 billion followers. It is a monotheistic faith based on revelations received by the Prophet Muhammad in 7th-century Saudi Arabia. The Arabic word Islam means “submission” reflecting the faith's central tenet of submitting to the will of God. Followers of Islam are called Muslims. The sacred text of Islam, the Qur'an, was written in Arabic within 30 years of Muhammad's death. Muslims believe it contains the literal word of God. Also important is the tradition of the sayings and actions of Muhammad and his companions, collected in the Hadith. Islamic practices center on the Five Pillars of Islam—faith; prayer; fasting; pilgrimage to Mecca; and alms Science: Science is the system of acquiring knowledge through use of the scientific method — that is, generating hypotheses and theories through observation and testing. Science is intimately linked with technology; technology is developed using scientific discoveries and science is reliant on technology to further its ideas. The goals of science are to learn more about the world and use this knowledge for the betterment of humankind, or for the destruction of mankind, whichever comes first. The term "science" originally referred to knowledge in general. However, it has been...

...good character trait, isn’t necessarily heroic or even highly honorable and praiseworthy unless it’s deployed in certain kinds of actions or causes. But he also wasn’t especially villainous in the sense of displaying particular evil qualities. His arrival in the Americas caused a great deal of death to American Indians, chiefly from disease. And it caused the subjugation and literal or virtual enslavement of the Indians. But this didn’t stem from Columbus’s being an unusually evil person. It stemmed from the brutality of the time, coupled with the contact between one culture that was much more powerful than another (and that carried many communicable diseases to which members of the other culture lacked resistance). I’m inclined to say that we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day, precisely because such national celebrations should be focused on honoring people who did things that were both especially important and especially honorable (such as veterans, President Washington, or Martin Luther King, Jr.) and not just on people who did things that were especially important. This might conceivably include not-necessarily-good people who did things that were unambiguously good. But European expansion into the Americas alone, important as it obviously has been (especially to the U.S. and to Hispanic culture, but also to the rest of the world) doesn’t qualify as the sort of good that needs to be celebrated this way. And that’s especially so given that it caused — even if largely inadvertently...
