(MPH students: This could be anything, large or small...slang terms for the drugs, how to write a grant, how to prevent staff burnout, etc. If they weren’t around for the beginning of the program, what are three things they wish they knew before taking the job?)

2. What issues have you experienced in working with law enforcement? How were these issues resolved? (MPH students: This is one of the most important questions. If there were issues with law enforcement, we need to know how they dealt/are dealing with the issue. For example, are they making presentation to the new academy recruits before they hit the streets? Do they have the support of the police chief? etc.)

3. What issues have you experienced in bolstering community buy in? How were these issues resolved? (MPH students: This is one of the most important questions. If there were issues with community support, we need to know how they dealt/are dealing with the issue. For example, did they speak with elected officials and community stakeholders? Hold open forums? etc.)

4. What issues have you experienced in linking clients with available services? How were these issues resolved? (MPH students: This is one of the most important questions. If there were issues with linking clients with services, we need to know how they dealt/are dealing with the issue. For example, do they have a relationship with local treatment programs? etc.)

5. What other words of wisdom do you have to share with Nevada as we go forward in opening syringe exchange programs in our states? (MPH students: this is their opportunity to tell us what they have learned that might be unique to their program. This could be something like engaging their clients in program design, using dealers to promote their program via word of mouth, offering incentives (for example $5 gift card for every 40 used syringes returned), etc.)

6. Do you have any curriculum to share that might be helpful to Nevada as we go forward in opening our syringe exchange programs? (MPH students: curriculum could be literally anything (power points, brochures, intake forms, client ID cards, etc). If they are willing to share anything, accept it. We want to be able to show new SEPs what existing SEPs are using so they can model their own stuff after what has already been successful. Make sure they know these resources will be shared with new programs in Nevada so they can use existing materials as a template for their new documents.)

7. Would we be willing to share any Memorandums of Understanding between your syringe exchange programs and various entities within your community? (MPH students: a MoU is a document that shows convergence of will between parties, which indicates an intended common line of action. They might hold these with local law enforcement, the community, etc.)

8. How do you track utilization of your syringe exchange program? (MPH students:
This question is also very important! For example, we need to know if they are using ID cards to track use of their program. This information could include demographic information, living situation, drug of choice, etc. We would also like to know how they formulate the ID cards/numbers to be confidential.)

9. Would you be willing to be listed as a contact for advice and resources for any future questions that may arise? (MPH students: This question allows them to be listed as a resource for new programs. Ideally, new syringe exchange programs will be able to look in the appendix and say “Jane Doe from New Jersey had a similar issue with her program, I’d like to call her and find out more details about how she addressed the issue.”)
