VATE INSIDE STORIES 2014—THE THING AROUND YOUR NECK

INTRODUCTION
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in 1977 in Enugu, Nigeria and is an Igbo woman. Both her mother and father worked at the University of Nigeria, he a professor and she a registrar. After initially beginning to study medicine in Nigeria,
Adichie moved to the United States when she was 19, completing a Masters in
Creative Writing from John Hopkins. She also studied at Princeton and Yale, and many of these university environments, staff and students, figure in her stories. She now divides her time between the two countries.
Adichie has been celebrated as a new voice in Nigerian writing. Her compelling prose and her articulate personality have made her a popular choice at writers’ festivals and for television interviews. This means that there are many links to her presentations on the Internet. She is a powerful and confident speaker; watching some of these is highly recommended.
As readers become more familiar with Adichie’s works, it is easy to find comparisons between her life experiences and her writing. It is therefore important to remember that her narrators are not Adichie, although she clearly has common concerns and ideas that recur in her writing. She has spoken widely about the ‘dangers of a single story’ and, as a consequence, if you are studying this text with a class, it would be wise to encourage them to read widely around other West African/Nigerian writers for a broader perspective.
Nigeria is the most populous country in West Africa and consists of over 500 different ethnic groups, with Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba being the most common.
These are historically, religiously and culturally divided ethnic groups. Britain formally colonised the region in 1914 and created a single nation calling it The Colony and
Protectorate of Nigeria. Over the years the move towards independence grew stronger until it was declared in 1960. It was divided largely between Christians in the North and Muslims in the South.
In the 1960s, there was internal strife and civil war, as 250 different groups and individuals fought for control. There were periods of democracy and also military rule. In 1967, there was a 30-month civil war when Biafra unsuccessfully tried to form its own country. This left much bloodshed and famine in its wake, with 3.5 million dead. In the 70s, Nigeria’s economy rose as the price of oil skyrocketed—oil having been found off the coast in the 1950s. The country was largely ruled by the military with shorter periods of civilian rule until 1999 when it returned to a democracy. Over this time, it was characterised by human rights abuses and corruption. There has been much ethnic violence and associated deaths estimated up to 10,000 people, as well as rioting connected to the price of oil and strikes to ensure a more fair distribution of the wealth.
At the moment, more than three quarters of the country live in extreme poverty. More recently, the obscure fundamentalist Islamist group Boko Haram has been attacking
Christians and committing other terrorist attacks. The country of over 115 million people is still beset by sectarian violence and its future as yet unsure.
A very readable link to Nigerian history is this review by Adichie of Chinua Achebe’s latest non-fiction on the Biafran war: .

...1) Coca-Cola Company announced in 1985 that they were going to change the brand name as well as the original taste of the cola; the very distinct and original taste that was known to the customers for almost a hundred years.  Coca-Cola’s loyal customers were extremely unhappy that their trusted brand was making changes and reacted to this inundating the company with dissatisfaction, defending Coca-Cola like they held a private stake in the company.  One group in Seattle threatened to sue the company. The company understood that this and along with the outpour of customers who did not want the change listened and decided not to change the brand name nor the taste. “Attitude represents a person’s favorable or unfavorable feelings toward the object in question”. Since Coca-Cola has been a staple cola in the homes of people everywhere for over a hundred of years becoming part of the family both daily and during holidays, Coca-Cola became a tradition among the brand loyal, meaning the customer became attached or had bonded with the product and a change of this size, out of the blue, would have a negative impact. This relationship with the product crossed the limits of simple loyalty. There is a variety of choices for a customer, although anyone loyal to Coca-Cola can attest to the one main reason for sticking with the brand, taste. Coca-Cola has a very distinct taste compared to their competition, which all taste the same from one cola to another in my opinion anyway. Therefore, a...

...Hi, I’m Amy and today I’m talking about how the younger generations are being taught all the wrong morals. What do we mean when we talk about morals? Why have we allowed the younger generations to become morally unkept? Who is at fault for them becoming like this? Who is supposed to teach the younger generation the right morals? Parents. Teachers. Peers. How have we allowed society to become so dysfunctional? All we ever see on the news these days are teenagers committing atrocious crimes and getting away with just a slap on the wrist, or getting away with it full stop because the general public are scared of the repercussions. A 16 year old boy from Texas was drunk driving when his car hit another vehicle and four other people stood at the side of the road, seven were injured in total. Earlier that night the teen and his friends were caught on surveillance cameras stealing two cases of beer. According to the courts it wasn’t his fault as he suffers with a ‘condition’ called Affluenza. Affluenza is an excuse used when referring to young people who have grown up wealthy and are apparently not ‘responsible’ for their actions, therefore justifying their poor behaviour on somebody else part and taking no responsibility for themselves. We are indirectly teaching the younger generation that there are no consequences to their actions and this needs to change. Professor A.C Hopkinson from the University of Cambridge says “The youth of today are surrounded by many influential...

Using the Tentative Annotated bibliography and topic statement from week 3, expand your discussion of the connections of your topic to the required components for the project: Systems Theory Model, human diversity, some aspect of family or consumer resource management. After you have developed the connections, delineate the problem/issue by highlighting statistics and facts that make this an important problem or issue for which the class should be concerned/interested. You should go outside the two articles that you have read to find this information. ...Dear Mr. President, As you know, civic and political participation is important. It allows any citizen to be active in the government. Some people in the world are more active than others. One of those people happens to have been Dorothea Dix. I am writing you to see if there is any way we could acknowledge what Dix did for the people of our country. Dorothea Dix was born in Hampden Maine in 1802. Her journey began when she witnessed the horrible conditions of a women’s prison in Massachusetts. She saw how the prisoners, especially the mentally ill, were being treated, and knew she had to make a change. She spent the next 40 years of her life trying to improve conditions. Dix began traveling throughout the state to research the conditions of other prisons. She gathered information that she then presented to the Massachusetts legislature. By doing this, she managed to get more money for the expansion of the State Mental Hospital. Although this itself was a major accomplishment, she wasn’t satisfied. She then traveled all over the country doing more research such as the conditions of the prisons, and the treatment of the patients. She started campaigning to create humane asylums and succeeded in quite a few states. Next, Dix decided to go to congress. She wanted them to grant her more than 12 million acres of land to use for the benefit of the mentally ill. Both houses of congress approved the bill, but it was vetoes by President Franklin Pierce in 1854. Dix was less than...

...in other wards people come to the United States with the hope of getting a better life and achieving the ultimate “American Dream”. Indeed the United States being a developed country and having one of the best economy has favourable living conditions in comparison to other parts of the world. This was not the basic reason back in the 17thand 18th century where America was more so a dump place for the poor or people trying to escape harsh governments. Immigration into America is still going on to this very day and it has become an issue amongst many who claim that it is impacting the country in a negative way. Is immigration really having a negative impact in the United States? Perhaps Immigration does have its pros and cons. All together I do agree that there are a lot of effects of a large movement of people into the United States. One of them largely being the variety of races that has made America a uniquely diversified nation that it is today. One of the races being Iranian American that’s purely an immigration group considering that they all came from the Iranian Republic....
