CHAPLAIN AUTUMN WILSON: BACKGROUND AND INTERVIEW

A paper submitted to Dr. David Hirschman
In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the course LEAD 635

Liberty Theological seminary

By
WILLIS WAINRWIGHT

Lynchburg, Virginia
Sunday AUGUST 25, 2013

The Pastor I interviewed is my Chaplain onboard USS SHILOH CG-67, Autumn Wilson, from Atlanta, Georgia. Chaplain Wilson has been in church ministry practically all her adult life. She has served churches in Atlanta, Florida, Rhode Island and Yokosuka Japan. She has served in the traditional setting as a choir director and as a youth pastor. She has a B.A. degree from Georgia State University in church ministries and received his Master of Arts in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Autumn has heart for missions, both locally and internationally, and sees herself finishing her career in the mission field overseas where she currently reside at in Yokosuka Japan.

Observations

Chaplain Wilson is a transformational leader. The mission statement onboard ship is KNOW the Lord, Grow in the word, and Go into the entire world preaching his name.’ She has a passion and enthusiasm for those locally and internationally. Locally, she is a familiar face at the on base community center; knowing everyone that works there by name and many of the regular visitors. She knows about their marriages and kids; the things that they are interested in; and their goals. Internationally, Autumn is heavily involved in working with international missions. she has personally came to Japan to help out a country who truly don’t know God and have to seek him out in private here.
Another aspect of the transformational leaderships shown by Chaplain Wilson is how she leads the members of the church. she wants those to follow where God leads them. When I approached Autumn about doing a meet and greet at the church, she wholeheartedly agreed with it. she encourages and follows up with me every week to see what she can do to better the ministry.

When it comes to disciple making, Chaplain Wilson believes in developing ministries that brings the people in the church together to share life. She believes that the Christian faith has to be lived out in practice. Her main discipleship method is Growth Groups and Bible Studies. Growth Groups are groups of church members who get together to discuss the latest sermon, get to know each other, and help each other in their Christian walk. Each group has a leader and is hosted at someone’s home. We have men’s, women’s and youth Bible Studies. Each one has a different format based on the teacher. Chaplain Wilson’s format is reproducible for Pastor’s that have great personalities. Chaplain Wilson is a people person and has a great charismatic personality. Pastor’s that are a little more reserved and intellectual would probably be more organized and traditional.

Interview

1- Tell me about your call to pastoral ministry. My call to ministry started at an early age. I believe I was around the age of eight. I took an interest in reading and studying the Bible. I served in different ministries that my church offered to the youth. To fast forward some, during my sophomore year of college I had a dream of me in a pulpit looking out at all of my family and friends. I decided at 23 the work in ministry because that’s where I felt God calling to. 2-Which pastoral responsibility do you enjoy the most, and why? I wouldn’t really consider it a responsibility but I enjoy sharing the love of God with all people. I feel that God blesses us so that we may be a blessing to others. Also, the second commandment that Jesus gave was for us to love our neighbor as thyself. We live in a world where there seems to be a lack of love. So I want to share the gift that God has so graciously blessed me with.
3-Which pastoral duty do you enjoy the least, and why? I would have to say the administration aspect. I’m very organized but I don’t want to get consumed with task that shifts my focus from ministry. 4-Describe the amount of time you spend in an average week in sermon preparation. On average I spend about 12 hours preparing sermons. 5-Describe the amount of time you spend in an average week in administrative responsibilities. On average I spend about 20 hours on administrative responsibilities. 6-Describe the amount of time you spend in an average week in personal devotions and prayer. I spend anywhere from 12-14 hours on personal devotions and prayer. 7-What is an area of pastoral ministry you wish you had been taught in school? I wish I had been taught more practical ministry. 8-Describe your ordination council. Within my denomination there are two levels of ordination. Candidates seeking ordination must undergo a process of five years with the Board of Examiners. In the second year of the process candidates are ordained as Deacons and in the Fifth year candidates are ordained as Elders 9-What is one piece of advice you would give to someone aspiring to become a pastor? The one piece of advice I’d give to someone aspiring to become a pastor is to be sure that God is the one influencing their decision to do so. Often times we’re pressured by others to pursue an occupation.
Chaplain Wilson loves to tell us every week ‘to be shiny and tasty” and quotes the Matthew 5:13-16: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
It is her favorite verse and essence of his ministry.

...studying the effects of stiffener on the stability of a structural frame. The exact formulation for simple system is mapped onto the real structure and the exact finite element formulation is derived. The effect of stiffeners on the stability analysis of structural frames is considered and the governing equations are derived. For simple members, a closed form solution and, for stiffened structural frames, the finite element formulation have been proposed. The formulation is implemented in a computer programme. The accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of the presented formulation work are verified using case studies. Keywords: stiffener; stiffener factor; finite element; step function; Dirac delta; stability; buckling. Introduction Buckling analysis is a technique used to determine buckling loads-critical loads at which a structure becomes unstable-and buckled mode shapes-the characteristic shape associated with a structure's buckled response .Buckling loads are critical loads where certain types of structures become unstable. Each load has an associated buckled mode shape; this is the shape that...

...obedience title he showed me there are greater things in life than getting that .Training your dog for the obedience ring is a lot of hard work. We trained for months working twice a day seven days a week. While we enjoyed training I wanted to earn that obedience title so bad I it was all I could think of for months. Uconn knew all the exercises he needed to perform inside and out, backwards and forwards. I went to the ring area with Uconn early in the morning. I wanted both of us to get accustom to the sights and sounds of where the obedience ring was set up. I had a book with me to try to so some reading to relax before we went in the ring. It was a warm August day. The building we were in was a pole building at the fairgrounds. It was damp and cool in the building and I wondered if the cool air was making me feel not so great. The obedience ring was set up with white gating all around it. It was a perfect square. The matting being used was rubber and a dark green color. We found a place in the last row. The area was crowded with spectators, other exhibitors and dogs. The judge was a woman. I had seen and shown other dogs under her in the past. She was very pleasant and smiled and welcomed us in her ring. For one thing the dog is very unpredictable. It takes a lot of hard work and patience to get your dog trained. I was at an obedience trial with Uconn. There was a little boy in a wheelchair. Uconn was licking his ear and made the little boy giggle. When I got in...

Save the Internet

...its people, I would think that it would be hard to believe that people are constantly trying to take that freedom away. Imagine my surprise when I logged onto one of my favourite websites and found out that we now have to fight for the right to browse and use the internet in whatever ways we see fit. Cable companies are now trying to make it their job to tell me what the internet is for and how I should use it. In my opinion, that is not right nor is it fair. The internet has always been owned by everybody and allowing cable companies to control what we – as customers – have access to is a form of discrimination. As a country we have been fighting discrimination in many different areas for such a long time, so why in the world would we want to pass something that brings more of it into our lives? Reclassifying Title II with Open Internet Rules Title II of the Communications Act has been around since 1934. It kept telecommunications companies as common carriers, which means that our cable providers have to deliver data from source to destination without any differential treatment, and without discrimination. This has given us the right to surf the internet without any restrictions on what websites load and work faster and better than others. However, internet service providers are now trying to "charge content providers to deliver data to customers through a so-called Internet fast lane" (Berkman, 2014). All that means for us is that these providers are setting up a financial...

This is something I have to do on a regular basis usually after I have ran my hours for the day and shut down for the night to rest. ...ideas, owing to the fact that the groom was not a Nigerian, compared to the bride who was. The event was attended by the family of the groom, who came all the way from England. The parents of the groom had to be dressed in the usual traditional attire, fit for the traditional rites, though It was a struggle to have the head gear of the grooms mother in place because it kept going off at intervals owing to the size of her head. After the traditional rites (payment of dowry) the bride was unveiled as the tradition demands, prayers were said by the oldest man in the bride’s family and it was all merriment and dance. The grand reception was held in a hall(Orchid Hotel) in Asaba and I had the opportunity to witness an opulent and electrifying decoration by one of the best Event Planners from Abuja Nigeria(Red Diamond Events) There was so much class and elegance, the hall was a masterpiece and I felt and imagined it was my big day. Guests were treated to several variety of meals, spanning from Traditional mouth watering soups to Western cuisines. There was a standby live band, the groom had to learn a few steps on the dance floor to the admiration of guests and family. New York City's soaring skyline wouldn't be the same without the Empire State Building. Reaching 1,250 feet, it holds the title of the seventh tallest building in the world. It remained the world’s tallest building for 41 years until the World Trade Center topped it off and seven followed. Built during the depression in 1930 and 1931, it cost a whopping 41 million dollars. The engineer who took on this giant project was H.G. Balcom. The design of the building changed 16 times during planning, but the 3,000 workers managed to pull it off in record timing, 1 year and 45 days, including holidays and Sundays. This skyscraper is made of 60,000 tons of steel, 200,000 cubic feet of Indiana limestone and granite, 10 million bricks, and 730 tons of aluminum and stainless steel. In 1945, a B-25 Bomber on its way to Newark Airport in New Jersey crashed into the 79th floor only causing minor damage luckily...

Autotransformers

...AC TRANSFORMER Southern Luzon State University College of Industrial Technology September 2015 TABLE OF CONTENTS I. Title Page II. Table of Contents III. Abstract IV. Introduction V. Statement of the Objective VI. Records of Data, Sketch, Photos of Lab Project VII. Result/Output of test VIII. Conclusion IX. Recommendation X. References XI Appendix Abstract A transformer is an electrical device that is used to change the voltage in alternating current (AC) electrical circuits. The ability of this device to change voltage is a major advantage of AC electricity over direct current (DC). A transformer needs an alternating current that will create a changing magnetic field. A changing magnetic field also induces a changing voltage in a coil. This is the basis of how a transformer works: The primary coil is connected to an AC supply. Wrap two, equal-length bars of steel with a thin layer of electrically-insulating tape. Wrap several hundred turns of magnet wire around these two bars. You may make these windings with an equal or unequal number of turns, depending on whether or not you want the transformer to be able to “step” voltage up or down. I recommend equal turns to begin with, and then experiment later with coils of unequal turn count. Join those bars together in a rectangle with two other, shorter, bars of steel. Use bolts to secure the bars together (it is recommended that you drill bolt holes through the bars before you wrap wire around them). Check...

Harlem

...Langston Hughes’ “Harlem: A Dream Deferred” What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun Or fester like a sore- And then run? Does it stink like rotten mean? Or crust and sugar over- Like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? ______________________________________________________________________________ Trevor B. Taylor A Dream Deferred, The Heartbeat of Harlem For the residents of Harlem, until the later half of the twentieth century, “wait” is all they ever heard. Wait! Wait for the laws to change before you can fulfill your destiny. Wait, until you’re allowed to go to college. If any of the people of Harlem were a shining gem just waiting to be polished, it might not ever happen, or it would have had to of been postponed. Because the residents of Harlem had black skin, their dreams were deferred. L. Hughes shines light on the minds of Harlem past and everyone else’s, who’ve experienced a dream that never came true or hasn’t yet. He effectively uses similes, metaphors, and rhetorical questions to express how he feels about a dream being postponed. The “dream” is a goal in life, not experienced while sleeping. an expected goal. The poem, in its’ current form leaves the dream up to the reader. But the poem was originally titled “Harlem”. Hughes since then gave this title to another one of his poems that more clearly states was happening there. That poem in black ink, clearly states...
