I'Ll Have a Miracle on the Rocks

At the ripe not so old age of כאמשים in Jerusalem, not only did I successfully incorporate עברית (Hebrew) into my lexicon of languages, I learned to live with and even laugh through the contradictions, hypocrisies, and impossibilities that are part of life. In Israel they seem to hover more startlingly on the surface in 3D; so you have to dodge them, endure them, and make yourself comfortable inside of them. Yes, I can honestly say this summer was a “bucket list” summer for me. One other item on my list while there was to experience The Red Sea, that miraculous place of astonishing crossings, partings, and transformations. So I got on the bus for the ride through the blistering Negev desert or the Wilderness as we know it (and as I saw, it truly is). Soon enough, clad in my hot pink swimsuit, I stood at the shores of the Red Sea. Then it was my turn to immerse myself and take “part” in this miracle. I looked across the waters of the Sea. On the opposite shores I could see Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan in one eyeful. Worlds away and yet so close. I stepped into the calm sparkling water … expectantly, and… OUCH! What I didn’t expect was to step onto sharp, jagged rocks. Apparently, the Red Sea is a rocky place. All I felt was the stab of rocks and the scorch of the Negev sun. Laughing at myself for over spiritualizing, I thought of one of my favorite Midrashim. Towards the end of the line of Israelites, two men, Reuven and Shimon are crossing through the sea. The thing is, they're both looking down. Apparently even though the water had drawn back from the sea creating water walls on either side, the bottom of the sea was still muddy. Reuven steps into this mud and sneers, "What is this muck? This is just like the slime pits of Egypt!" "Shimon scowls, "There’s mud all over the place! What’s the difference? Mud here, mud there. It’s all the same." They never once look up; so they never understand why those ahead of them are singing and dancing on the opposite shore. For Reuven and Shimon, that awe-inspiring miracle never even happened. Like Reuven and Shimon, I too was sort of disappointed with my Red Sea experience. I guess I thought that in that poignant place of one of God’s greatest miracles, I’d have some kind of romantic revelation about what it means to experience the mysterious essence of a REAL miracle. And the truth is … I did have a not so romantic but ever so useful revelation. Here it is. First, some miracles have painfully rocky beginnings, just like some students and some school years do. Second: As my siddur says, we have to pray as if everything depends upon God and act as if everything depends upon us. Like the little Midrashic boy, Nakhshon who walks into the sea before Moses parts it, sometimes we simply need to believe that everything will work out all right and just dive on in, remembering that miracles don't happen to us. They happen WITH us. Third: Every place we go has miraculous potential if we remember to look up and marvel at the journey. And fourth: As teachers, we are privileged to be the Moseses and Miriams for our students, leading them through the miracle of learning, parting the seas of knowledge for them, and celebrating with them when, together, we reach the other side. Blessed are you, God who performs miracles with me in this place.
So, I collected these rocks from the Red Sea to share with my teaching colleagues to remind us whenever we need it that we are in a miraculous place, doing miraculous work.

Christian Atheist

...Roredine33 Example Essay The Christian Atheist It was an extremely cold and dark night, when I decided to go out and go door to door to sell some literature. It was one of those nights in which I could see the fog while I breathed. And as I was walked I could hear sirens roaring in the back ground. It seemed like a night when no one would want to be on the street, much less going door to door! Nevertheless I decided to continue my journey and went from house to house, searching for someone who would be interested in the literature that I was carrying. As I walked on the street I stood in front of a home that barely had any light inside of it. I decided whether or not I should go and knock on the door and continue working, or if I should have just called it a day and just gone home. After a moment of being in the valley of decision, I was impressed to go up to this door and see whether or not someone inside would be interested in what I had to share. As I walked up to the large door of the home, I began to knock very loudly. As I heard a TV in the background, I silently waited and hoped that someone would answer the door. I began to hear some footsteps approaching the door. All of a sudden the door opened wide, and I beheld a young teenager around my age. I then proceeded by introducing myself and telling him what I was doing. As I continued my speech, I decided to hand the man a DVD entitled “The Final Events of Bible Prophecy”. As soon as the man saw this DVD he instantly decided...

But, sirs, because I am an ignorant man, At my beginning must I first beseech You will excuse me for my vulgar speech; I never studied rhetoric, that's certain; That which I say, it must be bare and plain. I never slept on Mount Parnassus, no, Nor studied Marcus Tullius Cicero. Colours I know not, there's no doubt indeed, Save colours such as grow within the mead, Or such as men achieve with dye or paint. Colours of rhetoric I find but quaint; My spirit doesn't feel the beauty there. But if you wish, my story you shall hear." THE FRANKLIN'S TALE In old Armorica, now Brittany, There was a knight that loved and strove, did he To serve a lady in the highest wise; And many a labour, many a great emprise He wrought for her, or ever she was won. For she was of the fairest under sun, And therewithal come of so high kindred That scarcely could this noble knight, for dread, Tell her his woe, his pain, and his distress. But at the last she, for his worthiness, And specially for his meek obedience, Had so much pity that, in consequence, She secretly was come to his accord To take him for her husband and her lord, Of such lordship as men have over wives; And that they might be happier in their lives, Of his free will he swore to her, as knight, That never...

Graduation Speech

...Commencement Address May 16, 2001   Good afternoon… and congratulations to the graduating class of 2001.  President Stafford, faculty, alumni, parents, family and friends.  I’m humbled and honored to have been asked to give this commencement speech on this, one of the most special days of your life (so far.)   I’ve had to think hard over the last several weeks about what information I could offer you that you might find useful in the years to come. Though the book of my life isn’t yet finished at 39 years old, I am a few chapters ahead so maybe there are a few lessons I can share.   Right now I’ll bet there are a multitude of emotions running through you - from sheer joy to trepidation, from anxiety to anticipation.  Don’t worry -- that’s normal. And it’s something you’ve faced before.  When you went from kindergarten to elementary school and then from junior high to high school to college… it’s all been a series of NEW BEGINNINGS.  Now, some of you have chosen to continue on with higher education, and others are jumping out into the “real world.”  But YOUR schooling isn’t over.  Treat the workplace as another school and learn all the lessons you can from it. Don’t be afraid to start from the bottom.  Be humble and stay humble.  No job is beneath you if you use it as a lesson.    I may have been very successful in my music career – but when I started a film career, I was just another actor looking for work.  My fame wasn’t a help –in fact, it was a hindrance.  No one in Hollywood...

Pipeline Parable

...cistern to the brim. The village elder paid them one penny for each bucket of water. "This is our dream come true! "shouted Bruno. "I can't believe our good fortune." But Pablo wasn't so sure. His back ached and his hands were blistered from carrying the heavy buckets. He dreaded getting up and going to work the next morning. He vowed to think of a better way to get the water from the river to the village. Pablo The Pipeline Man: "Bruno, I have a plan," Pablo said the next morning as they grabbed their buckets and headed for the river. "Instead of lugging buckets back and forth for pennies a day, let's build a pipeline from the village to the river." Bruno stopped dead in his tracks. "A pipeline! Whoever heard of such a thing?" Bruno shouted. "We've got a great job, Pablo. I can carry 100 buckets a day. At a penny a bucket that's a dollar a day! I'm rich!. By the end of the week, I can buy a new pair of shoes. By the end of the month a cow. By the end of six months I can buy a new hut. We have the best job in town. We have weekends off and two weeks paid vacation every year. We're set for life! Get out of here with your pipeline." But Pablo was not easily discouraged. He patiently...

Unbroken: a Life Saved by Rebellion, Dignity, and Faith

...A Life Saved by Rebellion, Dignity and Faith. Survival, Resilience and Redemption; these are three themes Laura Hillenbrand defines as major themes in her book Unbroken. While I agree with Hillenbrand that these are very strong themes I feel that rebellion, dignity and faith are far entirely better fitting. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption is a non-fiction tale of Louis Zamperini, a man who began life as a rambunctious child and teenager and grew to face great odds during World War II, yet came out alive and with a new outlook on life. Hillenbrand unravels Louie’s life as she illustrates his journey following his World War II bomber crashing into the ocean on a routine flight, and the rescue of his deathly frail body 47 days later is better referred to as his capture. He was now at the hands of enemy Japanese soldiers, and would face years of agonizing mental and physical torture in their imprisonment camps. Suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following his return home, as many World War II soldiers did, Louie sunk to very low place in life. In that time he realizes these themes in himself and finally finds his peace. As a first generation American who was born in New York and raised in California, Louis Zamperini’s acts of rebellion were not only out of desperate desire for attention but for sustaining the lives of his family and himself. Louie’s family struggled with money as he was growing up, so he had taken it upon...

...Acclaim for Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke “Just as dark and outrageous as his previous work. … His voice is so distinctive that he exists as a genre unto himself.” —The Washington Post “Palahniuk’s language is urgent and tense, touched with psychopathic brilliance, his images dead-on accurate. … [He] is an author who makes full use of the alchemical powers of fiction to synthesize a universe that mirrors our own fiction as a way of illuminating the world without obliterating its complexity.” —LA Weekly “Puts a bleakly humorous spin on self-help, addiction recovery, and childhood trauma. … Choke’s funny, mantra-like prose plows toward the mayhem it portends from the get-go.” —The Village Voice “Oddly, defiantly, addictive.” happily —Daily News “[Choke] shines a flashlight into America’s dark corners. … As darkly comic and starkly terrifying as your high school yearbook photo.” —GQ “Palahniuk is a gifted writer, and the novel is full of terrific lines.” —The New York Times Book Review “[Palahniuk’s] most enduring trait … is that marvelous quicksilver voice of his. … The exuberance of his language makes it still worthwhile to brave these often chilly and dark waters.” —The Oregonian “Choke is another welcome antidote to antiseptic consumer life, and you can’t blame it for grabbing you by the throat.” —Maxim “Palahniuk is a cult writer in the truest sense.” —Entertainment Weekly “His subversive riffs conjure a kind of jump-cut cinema of the diseased imagination, resulting...

Informative Speech On Motown

...What I mean is; if you were an African American, no matter where you went, you’d have a hard time trying to find a job, fit in, and survive. And what’s more, you couldn’t even express yourself, unless you count writing gospel, blues, and rhythm and blues (R&B) to be the gates of freedom.2 Berry Gordy Jr.’s parents moved in, and survived, despite the struggle, and raised a family.4 II. CHILDHOOD The childhood of Berry Gordy Jr., like the childhood of many other children growing up in Detroit, was filled with music, and musical influences. As I mentioned before, music was practically pouring out of every building you walked by. People were singing in the streets, in clubs, at home, everywhere. The school district had a very strong music curriculum, too. 6 Huskins 2 Berry took music lessons as a child, but soon he decided he wasn’t into learning sheet music, and he began playing songs and music by listening to it, above all what was playing on the radio.6 His parents watched him grow in his love of music, and supported him in his first few music careers.4 All was going well until his father was killed by a lightning strike, 3(and before you say “You’re making that up” in a know it all snooty tone, let me tell you something. This fact came straight out of a book I read, and I did not read it wrong. If you don’t believe me, go read it yourself. I dare you to. I’ll even give you the book title, smarty pants.) Anyways… after his father died, the...

Supernatural by Brother Branham

...Owen Jorgensen 1 Acknowledgments: In a project of this magnitude, it is understandable that I should owe many people a debt of gratitude for their help. First of all I want to thank Pearry Green for his vision, his encouragement and his efforts in publishing and distributing these books. I also want to thank Saundra Miles, David Buckley, Jay Weber, and the other people who spent many hours editing and proof reading the six manuscripts in this series. Their suggestions helped to make this a better book and a more accurate account of William Branham‘s life. Also, I want to thank Steven and Kathy Strooh, who put these books into audio format for all those people who would rather listen than read. I must certainly thank those people who have translated these books into their native languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Norwegian, Hindi, and many other languages. Supernatural: the Life of William Branham took me 17 years to complete. I was 34 when I started and 51 when I finished. To put that into perspective, my four children were in grade school when I began writing this biography. By the time I finished, three of my children were married and I had nine grandchildren. During the 17 years I worked on this project, my life had its ups and downs. I want to thank everyone who prayed for me during those 17 years. Finally I want to thank my four children—Benaiah, Betsy, Shiloh and Hannah—for their patience, their understanding, their encouragement, and their never-failing...
