...Before the Beatles Before 1955, popular music was a narrow expression of simple, pre-conformed melodies that had existed and created a calm, generally upbeat and sheltered youth. The Beatles came onto the scene in 1964 and slapped the world in the face with a new cult establishing an art form we would later call rock. The Beatles gave their contemporary generation of kids with misspent youths a hold onto something new - the sound was previously unheard and it enraptured the listener and made them really hear the music. The impressionable teenyboppers of the 60’s were addicted to the most outrageous and controversial thing to hit the shelves, a British, long-haired revolution that would “love to turn us on”. The real stronghold beginning of the Beatles started in Liverpool on October 9, 1940 at 7:00 a.m. while the city was under heavy bombing by the Nazis and a tiny John Winston Lennon was born in a hospital on Oxford Street. Julia and Alfred Lennon gave birth to the soon-to-be prodigy only to divorce before he turned three, leaving him in the care of his Aunt Mimi. He first attended Dovedale Primary School where signs of his creative genius showed early on. After graduating from there, John started at Quarry Bank Grammar School, but soon switched to art school, but soon quit. There he met his first wife, Cynthia and Stuart Sutcliff. Although Sutcliff had very little good musical ability he bought a bass guitar and joined The Quarrymen (a pre-Beatle, Lennon creation). Next came...

...| Emerged from Liverpool in the early 1960’s, The Beatles: George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, together changed music, culture, lifestyles, clothing style, and political attitudes. They sadistically emerged into the American pop music scene and changed it forever. Their energetic lyrics and funky beats with their grazing controversial long hair had a the youth entranced and influenced for a lifetime. Yet those weren’t the only things that had influenced many people around the world. The Beatles involvement with the politics of peace, and experimentation with hallucinogenic drugs and Indian mysticism brought a new look into meditation and a different view of society in whole. John Lennon, the lead singer of The Beatles, was 17 when he formed his first band called The Black Jacks. The band was made up entirely of classmates from the Quarry Bank Grammar School in Liverpool, and almost immediately after they started, they changed their name to The Quarry Men, to represent their school. They played Skiffle music, which was a mixture of folk, jazz, and blues which was popular in England at the time. In the summer of 1957, The Quarry Men were setting up for a performance in a church hall when another member of the band introduced Lennon to Paul McCartney, He auditioned for the band, after they had finished their set, he was immediately invited to join in October, 1957. By February 1958 Lennon’s style in music started moving increasingly away from skiffle...

...emptiness when someone's gone? The Beatles wrote about missing someone in the song “Yesterday.” The Beatles music is categorized as baroque pop, which brings in the elements of rock. Although a lot of people see music as a gateway to fame, some use it as a way to remember someone they are missing. As shown in their music, The Beatles have had many experiences with losing someone close to them. The Beatles started out as friends, they had fired the original drummer Pete Best and hired Ringo Starr. They lived in Liverpool England and soon moved to London in 1963. The Beatles were one of the most notorious rock bands in history. An interesting fact about the group was that their concerts were said to smell like urine due to over excited girls. They were said to have a certain charm that drove young teenage girls crazy. The song “Yesterday” is a perfect example of how music can be used as an emotional healer. This song states “ yesterday, love was such an easy game to play” (Yesterday) which implies that he had the love of his life and...

...THE BEATLES It all started in Liverpool where four guys got together to form a group in 1956. They called themselves The Beatles. The band broke up in 1970 for many different reasons. The Beatles are one of the most influential bands in history, because they seemed to have limitless imagination and their creativity will never be matched. Very recently Paul McCartney introduced Ringo Starr as a Rock N’ Roll hall of fame. McCartney was really happy to have Ringo entering the Hall Of Fame, and see the 4 of them as a real band. They are doing solo now but get together sometimes to play, and now McCartney is working with Famous rapper Kanye West RNB singer Rihanna. I think the real reason McCartney is working with them has to do with the fact that true geniuses in their fields tend to get bored easily, so they'll often step outside their comfort zone to make things interesting. That's why Paul often has side projects in classical works, experimental electronica, etc. This is just one more experimental side project, nothing more. So I think they should have not retire because they are artist and they should always be on the scene. I really like the fact they are still touring because they enjoy what they do and they grow up playing music and I think they should never retired just so the new generation get to know about the Beatles. Their style has change a little bit, but only because we live in a different time period, but they still wear suit and look classy as always. Very...

...is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark. (Chinese Proverb) We have decided to write this thesis about the Beatles. We want to demonstrate how the Beatles can help with teaching listening. They were and still are the most influential pop music group in the world. We realized that students are not very interested in listening topics that are in pupils’ students’ books. Listening in English can be difficult for a lot of young learners and also adults. For this reason we have chosen the Beatles to help students with listening. Their songs are easy to understand and provide a wide range of topics suitable for high school learners. Firstly, the aim of our thesis is to introduce the basic principles of teaching listening. Secondly, there would be a practical part using the Beatles lyrics as well as activities connected with listening and the Beatles. It will present a survey that we did with the students and three lesson plans based on it. Since the whole practical part I based on the Beatles songs, the introductory part provides the summary of the most important events from the foundation to break-up of the Beatles band. By no means, can it...

...The Beatles are not typically associated with orchestra music, but due to George Martin and the North Carolina Symphony’s performance, I was able to experience the classical side of The Beatles live. In Raleigh’s Memorial Hall, Saturday, April 23rd, I attended the Classical Mystery Tour, which was accompanied by the North Carolina Symphony. The performance featured the Classical Mystery Tour, which is a cover band for The Beatles, that played over thirty revolutionary songs. The North Carolina Symphony performed the symphonic background that was implemented by George Martin, the Beatles producer, who is considered by many to be “The Fifth Beatle”. Although the concert was not solely an orchestra, I believe that the North Carolina Symphony...

...since The Beatles had their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9 1964, over 50 years ago, fans still go mad over this group that is no longer together today, but whose music still lives on. The Beatles became an extremely popular and influential group in Rock n’ Roll and their music is still played all over the world. The impact that they made on the music industry has been noted for quite some time now but can’t be overstated enough. The members who made up this group were, George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. These four men, all from Liverpool, England, met one by one over time for their love for music. John first met Paul when he impressed him with his guitar skills one night and was then invited to join Johns group at the time, The Quarrymen. Next came George who joined the group in Feb. of 1958. The three of them joined a pair of guys whose mother owned The Casbah club and they became Johnny & the Mood Dogs, and then changed to The Silver Beetles. John Lennon dreamed up the bands final name, The Beatles, mixing ‘beat’ with ‘beetle’ like the last groups name. In 1960, the Beatles toured Hamburg, Germany and were then joined by Ringo Starr, who was previously playing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. These were the main four men, also known as the “fab four”, who made up the group we still talk and hear about today. Brian Epstein, an English music entrepreneur, was best known in his lifetime for managing the Beatles. He first...

...Title: | Literature review with annotated bibliography | Assessment No#: | Assessment 1 | Due Date: | Week 6,5pm Friday, 17th October 2014 | Many people have accredited Brian Epstein for The Beatles worldwide success, yet it seems that he has been overlooked as an inductee into the ‘Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Non-Performer Area’ for over 29 years. This review will focus on 3 major things Epstein did to help the Beatles success which emerge repeatedly throughout the literature reviewed. These are: His absolute belief in the band, his vision for the bands’ image, and the Beatles musicality. This paper will primarily focus on whether Epstein contribution to The Beatles success merits a place in the ‘Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Non-Performer Area’. According to Spitz (2005) and Riley (2011) there are two different theories about how Epstein was introduced to the music of the Beatles. Epstein himself states that he was first introduced to the Beatles from a customer Raymond Jones when he requested a copy of ‘My Bonnie’ from the NEMS record store that Epstein managed as part of the family business. “I had never [before] given a thought to any of the Liverpool beat groups then up and coming [sic] in the cellar clubs” (Spitz, 2005, p.266). While Riley (2011) argues that Epstein knew about the Beatles long before he let on. As a prominent record store manager, Epstein regularly advertised in Mersey Beats and was also a columnist in the music driven newspaper. Riley (2011) suggests that “Epstein...

...5138839 The Beatles. The ultimate band and one in which I have loved since I was a baby, thanks to my mom. She would always sing “And I Love Her” to me when I was scared or could not go to bed. My Babi (Polish for grandmother) and my Nonni (Italian for grandmother) would also sing me songs to sooth me to sleep, about butterflies and magical places. These are some musical events that I can remember from when I was little and that is where my musical journey began. Music was never my best subject, especially when it came to playing musical instruments. I was better at singing, dance and drama. I did take music as a kindergartener, learning how to play simpler instruments and to sing songs, which I think I had an easy time with, but I cannot fully remember. I picked up the recorder easily, but when I got into older grades the one thing that still to this day that throws me off about music is the “salamander and penguin” thing that my music teacher would always say to me about music notes. I still do not get it and that frustrates me now because I could have been a fantastic flute player if they did not throw this curve ball at me in the first place! I always thought I could master an instrument, but the challenging part was finding...

...The Beatles, a music phenomenon from Liverpool England, began their trek to super stardom in 1956 as the Quarrymen. Formed by music genius John Lennon, the group later added Paul McCartney and in 1958, included George Harrison and Stu Sutcliffe. With name changes such as Johnny and the Moondogs and The Silver Beatles, the group finally (and wisely) adopted the name The Beatles in 1960's. At that time, the group consisted of four members; John Lennon (rhythm guitar, keyboards, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Peter Best (drums). Member Stu Sutcliffe left the group that year, dying of a brain hemorrhage only months later. With their first hits “Love Me Do” in 1962 and “Please Please Me” in 1963 (which topped the charts for an astonishing thirty weeks), they quickly became Britain's top rock group. That popularity quickly spread to the United States and worldwide. In 1964, The Beatles released “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, selling more than one million copies andmarking the beginning of the Beatlemania phenomenon in the United States. One month later, on February 9, The Beatles stormed the United States and made their first guest appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, which was watched by an estimated seventy-three million viewers. In the same year, The Beatles began their film adventures. A “Hard Day’s Night”(a comedy-musical), followed in 1965 by “Help!”(a much smaller venture than the first), were widely received by American...

...Film Professor Denise Orpustan-Love July 30, 2012 The Beatles were one of the worlds most influential and iconic bands who evolved in the 1960’s from Liverpool, England. For years people have found refuge in their lyrics that calm, inspire, and awe us to this day. Across the Universe not only provides the audience with a more in-depth look at the Beatles’ lyrical explorations, but also incorporates the use of filming techniques such as, cinematography, editing and sound techniques. It also gives us a closer look at the Vietnam War, struggling singers, love and life during a revolutionary period in U.S history that would prove to be unforgettable. This review will encompass topics such as “mise en scène,” (Goodykoontz, 2011), storytelling, cinematography techniques and the meanings behind the directors actions in a film. The names of the characters in Across the Universe, with the exception of the character “Max,” played by Joe Anderson, were all derived from original Beatles songs. For example there is a character named “Jude,” from the song, “Hey Jude,” who’s character is played by Jim Sturgess, as well as a character named “Lucie,” played by Evan Rachel Wood, and, “Prudence”, played by T.V Carpio. In any part of the movie you see, you can find a character of a Beatle’s song. Using the Beatles’ music to create a flow to the movie allows for all types of audience members to connect to the film. While some may have grown up listening to the Beatles when the band was still together...

...long as I can preach and get their silver for the things I teach, that I will live in poverty, from choice?” (Chaucer 143). By this, the pardoner elaborates how he is aware that he is greed, and for as long as he can keep taking people’s riches he will not live in poverty. This shows that the pardoner himself, who is known to guilt people out of their greed, is the main greedy one himself. The pardoner took pleasure in taking belongings from the poor, and he had no shame in doing so. In The Pardoner’s Tale, the pardoner tells about three friends who go after death. In that journey, they encounter a large sum of gold, which can make all three of them very wealthy amongst their people; “At once the three young rioters began to run, and reached the tree, and there they found a pile of golden florins on the ground” (Chaucer 146). By then, they began to negotiate outcomes and eventually send the youngest to fetch them a drink. As the youngest of the three began to meet his greed, he poisoned the drinks so he could acquire the gold all to himself. This begins to show that greed was overwhelming and would take over a person’s mindset causing them to...
