DOUAI, France — One day in the summer of 2010, a man was digging in his garden in northern France when he discovered a trash bag containing the remains of an infant. When he summoned the police, they found the body of another newborn. A few days later, they found more bags in the garage — with six additional small corpses.
Police contacted the house’s previous owners, and quickly discovered the horrifying explanation: Frenchwoman Dominique Cottrez confessed to secretly bearing and then killing eight of her newborns, saying she feared they were children of a long, incestuous relationship with her father.
But forensic exams on the remains of the eight infants, and tests on her two living grown daughters, showed that all were fathered by Cottrez’s husband, according to court documents.
Cottrez, 51, went on trial Thursday in the city of Douai, accused of multiple counts of first-degree murder of minors.
Cottrez wept as she took her seat. She faces life in prison if found guilty.
Her lawyers were expected to argue that she was a victim of rape and incest, and ask for a lesser sentence.
The worst infanticide case in modern French history stunned the country when the bodies were discovered in and around Cottrez’s former home in 2010.
Cottrez’s obesity appeared to hide the pregnancies, which went unnoticed by her husband, children, neighbors, colleagues — and even doctors at a nearby hospital.
She has told investigators she was mocked as “fatty” in school and closed herself up at the farm with her father, who accepted her as she was.
In court on Thursday, the prosecutor asked if she enjoyed being pregnant with her two daughters, Emiline, 28, and Virginie, 27, both present at the hearing. Cottrez replied, “Yes, for Emiline I liked it, but only for Emiline.”
Dozens of forensic and psychiatric experts, police investigators and witnesses, including her husband, daughters and siblings, will take the stand to help understand the incomprehensible, and perhaps to help the defendant, who sobbed repeatedly during the first day’s hearing, to open up.
A withdrawn, secretive nurse’s aide, Cottrez told investigators she was raped by her father, first when she was 8 and repeatedly through her childhood and teenage years, according to judicial documents. She later entered a long, incestuous relationship with him as an adult, including after she married, and said that it became consenting — and even said she was in love with her father more than she was with her husband.
Her father died in 2007.
One of the first witnesses called to the stand Thursday was Leonard Meriaux, who bought the Cottrez family house and discovered the first corpse in 2010.
From one interrogation to another, the police went from surprise to stupor. Cottrez first admitted killing the two infants found in the garden. Then she herself informed the investigators that several other bodies were in the garage of the house, but she didn’t know how many exactly, according to court documents.
She told the investigating judge that she had never used contraception or had an abortion because of a phobia of doctors. She also said she didn’t keep the babies because she was afraid that they were the results of her incestuous relations with her father. She said the killing had become a “means of contraception,” according to the judicial documents.
She said she told her father of the eight pregnancies and the eight murders, and investigators believe he could have helped her hide some of the bodies.
The death she described the most clearly was the first one, in 1989. She said she smothered the baby boy with sheets, placed him in a trash bag that she had prepared in advance, and put the bag in her wardrobe, according to the documents.
The second killing happened when she was hospitalized for an epileptic seizure. She said she gave birth in the hospital toilet, strangled the child, wrapped it in plastic sheeting and towels, placed it in the closet of her hospital room and then brought it back home, hidden in her garment bag.
Her memories became blurred for the following births and deaths. The last infanticide was in 2000.
Her husband and daughters say they noticed foul odors in various parts of the house, but thought they came from sewage, or their dog, or even their father’s feet.
Cottrez was released from jail in 2012 after spending two years in temporary detention. In a January interview with a local newspaper, she said: “I never gave first names to the babies. The first one, I saw he was a baby boy. The others, I didn’t look, I didn’t want to. But when they were in the garage, when it was cold, I went there and covered them with a blanket.”
The verdict is expected next Thursday.

Serial rapist Adrian Bayley is appealing against convictions for two rapes he committed before he murdered Jill Meagher, hoping for release before he dies behind bars.
Bayley’s defence team on Thursday lodged three appeals with the Victorian court of appeal over two convictions and a recent ruling that increased his non-parole period to 43 years. That meant Bayley would not be released from prison until he is at least 86.
It was unclear on what grounds Bayley was appealing – his lawyer, Saul Holt SC, could not be reached for comment – or whether the applications would be accepted by the court.
But the 35-year non-parole period Bayley received after raping and murdering Brunswick woman Jill Meagher was extended to a minimum of 43 years in May, after he was sentenced for the violent rapes of three more women.

FacebookTwitterPinterest Jill Meagher. Photograph: AAP
In 2014 and earlier this year he was found guilty of raping an 18-year-old woman in St Kilda in 2000, and a 25-year-old woman and a Dutch backpacker in 2012, months before he strangled Meagher in 2013. Those verdicts meant Bayley had been convicted of raping 10 women.
His minimum sentence is the longest imposed in Victoria for at least a decade.
Bayley’s appeals were lodged without help from Legal Aid. The premier, Daniel Andrews, said Bayley would receive no taxpayer-funded advice because of changes to the service’s guidelines.
“I think every Victorian can be confident that none of their money will be spent on this person’s appeal,” he told reporters on Thursday.

A 23-year-old parolee charged with shooting a rival four times remained at large Wednesday after he brazenly bolted from police — in handcuffs, officials said.
Tareek Arnold, with his wrists shackled behind his back, was about to be taken downtown for arraignment Tuesday night when he shoved the cop escorting him out of the 32nd Precinct stationhouse in Harlem and made a run for it, police said.
A surveillance video from a nearby business showed the tattooed terror running down the block after his 7:30 p.m. escape, with a uniformed officer and a detective a few seconds behind him.
Arnold ran into a building on St. Nicholas Ave. near W. 134th St. — just two blocks from the stationhouse — but soon disappeared, police said.
A second surveillance video showed he left the address soon afterward. His whereabouts remained a mystery Wednesday.
Longtime family friends said they didn’t know where Arnold went.
“I haven’t heard from him,” said one, who did not want to give her name. “I’m just finding out what’s going on through the news.
“I’m worried and I’m hoping that nothing bad happens to him,” the woman said. “I don’t want nothing to happen to him, but I know how police can be."
Arnold, who is considered dangerous, was charged with shooting a rival on Seventh Ave. near 140th St. on June 8.
The 38-year-old victim was shot in the right arm, upper chest, stomach and elbow during the bloody confrontation, but survived, officials said.

Tareek Arnold, 23, who had been arrested for attempted murder, escaped from police custody in Harlem Tuesday night, police said.
Arnold, who has an infant son, according to family friends, had been arrested six times before he was taken into custody Tuesday.
His most recent arrest had been on March 19, when he was charged with driving a car through Harlem without a license, officials said.
He also served four years in prison after being convicted of weapons possession in 2010, according to court records.
He was released in January 2014 and was to be on parole until 2018, officials said.
Arnold was last seen wearing a white shirt, light gray sweatpants and gray sneakers, according to police sources.
He has two tattoos, one that says “Troll” and another that reads “Militant Soldiers,” officials said.

Johannesburg - An East Rand man was sentenced to life plus two more sentences of 25 years each for raping his teenage niece, and murdering the child she gave birth to.
Handing down judgment at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, Judge Delize Smith told the story of the five-year-old boy, and his orphaned mother kept as a sex slave by her own uncle.
The woman, who may not be named, was 14, and an orphan with no siblings. She lived with her grandmother, his mother, who she depended on solely.
Smith said the girl was still a virgin and did not know what love between a man and a woman should entail. Her uncle was in a position of trust, but instead, exerted so much pressure on her that she allowed him to do whatever he wanted with her.
''So basically she became your sex slave,'' Smith told the former taxi driver.
When she was 14 he made her pregnant. He is twice her age.
Thrown out onto the street
When her grandmother found out, she was thrown out onto the street with her clothes.
She was forced to stay with her uncle, and when she became pregnant by him, had to drop out of school. She became the laughing stock of the community, Smith said.
She had to cook, and clean, and wash clothes for him and did not have the life a child should have had.
Once she gave birth, the man's mother did not want to have anything to do with her.
Over the years, the father beat the boy severely. He had broken ribs, a cracked skull and a broken arm, but was never taken to a doctor.
Smith said the man eventually took the child to a sangoma, after police warned him that the child needed help. The sangoma said the child's injuries were too serious for him to treat.
When the boy died, the man forced her to carry him, and dump his body.
The Star reported that his body lay unclaimed at the Germiston mortuary for two months. Only after the newspaper published a picture of him, and it was reported on the radio, did the boy's mother go the police.
Charges against her were withdrawn after she became a State witness. Smith said she could tell that her psychological scars had not healed.
When the man testified in mitigation of sentence, he begged the community and his niece for forgiveness.
'One of the most heinous acts'
However, he then said it was his niece's fault for moving in with him. He said he had tried to chase her away, that she did not listen, and that he was the victim.
''To murder your own child is also one of the most heinous acts,'' said Smith.
''He was 5. A child depends on parents for its love and security and he had suffered severely at your hands. You did nothing to secure his safety. You did nothing when he was injured. He received no medical attention in the short time that he was with you.
''His broken bones had to heal themselves. His injuries had to heal themselves. And what do you say? You say no, he was never seriously injured.''
He apologised for what he did to the child, but when questioned, said he only spanked the child when he was naughty.
Smith said he had claimed that his niece had slept around and the child was not his, but DNA tests proved otherwise.
Showed no remorse
He disappeared when he learned the police were looking for him, leaving the woman to fend for herself. He had earned R300 a week as a taxi driver.
Without any support, she had nothing.
Even though he spent a few months in jail after he was arrested, he showed no remorse.
The fact that he was the only one in the community prepared to take the girl in, was not enough to count in his favour.
He was sentenced to life for the murder of the child, and two sentences of 25 years each for rape.
There were two sentences for rape because of a change in law relating to rape at the time of the offences. One sentence related to legislation before the law was changed, and the second to the period afterwards.
Smith ordered that his name be entered into the sexual offences register, that a copy be sent to her, and that the victim be informed if he ever had a parole hearing.
Prosecutor Ntsika Mpolweni quietly left the court after successfully getting the man jailed. The woman was present for the judgment.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Zane Terryn and his 16-year-old girlfriend wanted to die together in Ohio, authorities said.
The 15-year-old boy stole a handgun and money from a relative's Palm Bay home Sunday before the young couple headed north on Interstate 95 to Terryn's home state, according to deputies.

But a state trooper's inquiry about the teenagers' broken headlight at a Pilot Travel Center in Cocoa about 9:45 p.m. halted their plan when Terryn started shooting at the trooper.
Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Channing Taylor was shot in the shoulder.
He fired back at Terryn, killing him.
Terryn's girlfriend tried to escape in her vehicle but soon struck a boat that was being pulled by a pickup on State Road 520.
She was charged with attempted murder of a law-enforcement officer and second-degree murder.
The attempted-murder charge is from the trooper's injury, authorities said, because she played a key role in the shooting.
"[S]he provided access to the firearm. It was in her truck [that] they traveled in," said FHP Maj. Tod Goodyear, "and she fled the scene after the event."
The murder charge is from her boyfriend's death.
"Since a person died while she and the deceased suspect were in the commission of a felony crime, she was charged with felony murder," Goodyear added.
She is being held without bond.
The Orlando Sentinel is not naming the girl because of her age.
Taylor is recovering from the shoulder wound, which was treated at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.
He has since been released from the hospital.
"Lieutenant Taylor is currently on paid administrative leave and is recuperating from his injuries, which is the normal practice in cases of this nature," Goodyear wrote in a statement Monday.
As the investigation continued Monday, officials released details about the shooting.
According to troopers, the teens were traveling to Ohio — Terryn's home state — to commit suicide.
Taylor was parked at the Pilot Travel Center on West King Street.
Meanwhile, the teens had stopped at the gas station to get food. Channing noticed the broken headlight and walked over to the teens to talk about the "safety equipment problem," the release said.
While Taylor was talking to the girlfriend, who was in the driver's seat, "Terryn, who was the passenger in the vehicle, produced a firearm and began shooting at the trooper," Goodyear said.
The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is looking into the use of force with a parallel but independent investigation.
Taylor began his career as a trooper in 1994.
He was promoted to lieutenant in 2007 and is supervisor of traffic homicide for the Brevard district.
It's unclear whom Terryn lived with in Palm Bay.
She is also from the same city in Brevard County.

...I love you!! I love you. These famous three words are associated with a very famous computer virus. The virus originated in the Philippines and was created by two young Filipino programmers. This computer virus infected tens of millions of computers and cost over $5.5 billion dollars in damages worldwide. The computers were infected so rapidly that in ten days 50 million computers were infected. The virus was successful at propagating because of several reasons. One of the main reasons was that the virus was sent by email and came from someone you know, as the virus sent itself to the first 50 contacts in Outlook. Since it came from someone that you knew people would open it without any thought. Another reason it was successful was that it depended on some of the vulnerabilities of the Operating System, in this case the file was a VBS script and Microsoft’s scripting engine was on by default. It was also good at confusing computer users because even if you were computer savvy the virus tried to mask its extension in the filename by using .txt in the name. the virus also was a pain because it ran at boot up and also replaced and damaged files in with these extensions. JPG, JPEG, VBS, VBE, JS, JSE, CSS, WSH, SCT, DOC, HTA, MP2, and MP3. It replaced the files with these extensions with copied of itself. . The virus also downloaded a Trojan. This was also a time that no one was worried about computer security so you can imagine the damage this computer virus did. Nowadays it...

Hours later, disaster strikes the city of Pompeii when Mt. Vesuvius erupts, burying the entire city under twenty feet of ash, pumice stones, and rubble. Bimbo’s unusual behavior before the volcanic eruption is not so unusual. Since ancient times, there have been many observations of odd animal behaviors before natural disasters have struck. In fact, in 373 bc, historical records indicate that large populations of rats, snakes, and weasels were spotted fleeing the Greek city of Helice before an earthquake devastated that region. Over the centuries, many historical records have documented odd animal behaviors that have preceded natural disasters, including animals leaving their natural habitats, waking from hibernation, behaving wildly or restlessly, and producing vocal sounds without apparent reasons. In recent years, elephants and other wild animals were seen moving inland toward the forests before the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that affected Southeast Asia. Zoo officials also reported that many of the captive animals hid in their enclosed shelters before the tsunami struck. In 2008, thousands of frogs and toads were spotted migrating from their habitats in the Sichuan province of China before an earthquake struck that region. Can animals...

The advertisement is also presenting cultural expectations of the ideal image. Everyone in the advertisement is slim or chiseled and ideally attractive. Western culture’s media has established a certain “rule book” that tells people that in order to be considered good-looking or physically appealing, they have to live up to those expectations. The Dolce and Gabbana advertisement perpetuates cultural expectations of gender roles by displaying a woman being dominated by several males. This ad demonstrates how women are always viewed or associated as sex objects. This photo shows men surrounding and staring at her as a sexual object. All of the men have their eyes on her while her face is turn towards the audience. The look on her face seems as though she is forced into this scene against her will. Her face is turned away to avoid contact with the man who is pinning her down. This shows that she is discontent and trying to break out of the cultural norm. This body language...

...The existence of homosexuality in China has been well documented since ancient times. According to one study, homosexuality in China was regarded as a normal facet of life in China, prior to the Western impact of 1840 onwards. However, this has been disputed. Many early Chinese emperors are speculated to have had homosexual relationships, accompanied by heterosexual ones. Opposition to homosexuality and the rise of homophobia, according to the study by Hinsch, did not become firmly established in China until the 19th and 20th centuries, through the Westernization efforts of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. On the other hand, Gulik's influential study argued that the Mongol Yuan dynasty introduced a more ascetic attitude to sexuality in general. It is also argued that the classical Chinese were unable to express homosexuality in a coherent and empathetic manner." Thus, it may remain for further research to determine the question of whether homophobic attitudes in Modern China can be significantly attributed to the entrance of Western attitudes into China, or whether opposition was merely not expressed in a coherent manner. Either way, it is indisputable that homosexual sodomy was banned in the People's Republic of China from at least the twentieth century, until it was legalized in 1997. In 2001, homosexuality was removed from the official list of mental illnesses in China. Traditional views of homosexuality in China The political ideologies, philosophies, and...

...Alternative Work Schedules In order to improve the working environment and to increase the productivity and morale of workers, many companies are letting employees adjust their work schedules. Many employers are trying to move away from the traditional time patterns and are allowing employees to match their work schedules more closely to their lifestyles. Three of the modifications in the traditional workday that are being utilized by many organizations are: the compressed workweek, flexitime, and job sharing. Compressed Workweek Typically, the compressed workweek consists of a four-day, forty-hour week where the employees work ten hours a day. How-ever, “some organizations are experimenting with a three-day, thirty-six hour week {average of twelve hours per day}” {Quiable, 1980, 341}. An advantage of the compressed of the workweek is that workers have an extra day to handle personal matters or participate in leisure activities. This additional free time tends to reduce employee absenteeism and tardiness and to increase the morale and job satisfaction of the employees. Another advantage of this schedule is the reduction in the time and expense of commuting to work by 20 percent each week {Chruden and Sherman, 1984, 42}. One major disadvantage of this work schedule is the employees, increased fatigue which results from longer hours worked each day. Flexitime Another alternative that is becoming popular is one whereby employees may determine their own daily work schedules...

...1)What messages do the modern shows give you about family life? How do they get these messages across? Shows I usually like, deal with teens with broken families/absent parents. However, they also point out that it's OK to have an unusual kind of family structure. On One Tree Hill, for example, Lucas is being raised by a single mom, and he has a close relationship with his uncle, but his dad isn't completely out of the picture. On a teen show such as iCarly, on Nick, Carly's older brother plays the role of guardian, because her dad is in the Air Force. Her mom is never really spoken of. Family life has changed a great deal during the course of the 20th century. Few people these days have the stereotyped family of a working father, a stay-at-home mother, and several children. There are millions of single parent households in America today, and many mothers work outside the home. There are also millions of blended families that, through divorce and remarriage, consist of a married couple and his, hers, and/or their children. Today, almost any arrangement in which children live with one or more adults who are responsible for meeting their physical and emotional needs can be considered a family. This is one way our culture is different then the culture of fifty years ago. While fifty years ago, young parents learned their parenting skills from their own parents and older siblings, today they often learn from friends, books, the Internet, and classes. Today, on a teen...

Narrative Report

...fighting with their conscience.” This is what I learned from this rotation. My life brought me to this life changing experiences. My mommy is the only person I talk about my life, my problems, my achievements, and she fills up the emptiness I felt when I was down. In any instances, she never brought me down. I’m including this to my narrative, because even though she never really did felt the hard thing about “bearing down a child” because she was a post-cesarian section patient for me and my brothers, but she felt the pain in labor which is the hardest of them all as a patient told me. In my duty here in the delivery room made me reflect about the life my mommy, luckily gave me. So I decided not to waste it and cherish all the sacrifices and pain she felt when she was giving birth to me. And when I delivered my first ever baby, I texted my mommy right away saying, “Hey Mommy, I Love You! Thank you for this wonderstrucking life. I’ll be home soon.” Our clinical exposure here at Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center made us stressed, tired but we can tell ourselves that after this rotation. We can surely handle anything else. Thanks to our Clinical instructor Ma’am Marie Ann Lapitan, She was one of my favorite instructor *no joke*. From my group, I was the only person who never, as in, never experienced or even seen and assist an actual delivery. I told her that right away so I she’d know that I never handled any cases ever since. At first I was very afraid ‘coz Mam. Lapitan told...
