...Agarwal Response Essay: “Guerilla Open Access Manifesto” Aaron Swartz Word Count: 820 A few days ago, Pizza hut had an unlimited pizza offer for a day where you would get free pizzas after paying for one. We went there and ordered pizzas. We observed that the pizzas, which were coming for free, were not of the usual quality. They had very less toppings and were not good properly. That is when people started saying that anything, which Pizza Hut offers for free, is not of a good quality. I find that to be applicable on myself. What if Pizza hut becomes the Internet? Aaron Swartz’s article “Guerilla Open Access Manifesto”, states that information of any kind should be public and free of cost. Aaron stated in his article that all information must be shared and it is the responsibility of the people who have access to these resources to share it with the others and make it public and “free”. What about the quality of this information? Will everyone like to each such a pizza? My arguments further will explain why most people would not want to eat such a pizza. In response to what Aaron has stated, two things come to my mind. First, is sharing information with respect to the Open Access movement actually free? Second, how does one differentiate between the authenticity of the article and decide which one is spam and which is not? While the Open Access promoters constantly emphasize on the fact that information will be free for public use, they do not talk about...

...Brad Pitts insisted I conduct research on the pro's and cons of Wi-Fi in the shop. Comparing the length of how long other coffee cafes have been in business and determining where they went wrong, and being able to provide quality customer service, warm inviting ambiance, and comparable menu offerings. Problem ← Large chains with financial stability ← Established coffee houses with Wi-Fi offerings. ← Emerging local competitors. Background The Manager of Bread and Biscuit, Brad Pitts, insisted I set up Wi-Fi in the Dalton, MA shop, as-soon-as possible. As a first step to implementing Wi-Fi, this report compares the pros and cons of Wi-Fi for the shop in reference to other cafes’ in the area. Dalton is nestled in the heart of the Berkshires and many tourists visit this are in the summer and fall. Summer is peak season due to the presence, Tanglewood, MassMoCA, Norman Rockwell Museum, The Clark Art Museum, and Jacobs Pillow. The Berkshires draws visitors from all over New England, New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island. In the fall the same visitors return to catch a glimpse of our fall foliage. Bread and Biscuit’s goal is to create a warm inviting ambiance with coffee, baked goods, and a few “Berkshires” memorabilia. It is a place to gather with friends or family, relax and unwind while sitting in the heart of the Berkshires sipping on your favorite coffee and nibbling on your favorite treat, and enjoying free Wi-Fi. ...people, we realized something important: the vast majority of people in the world don’t have any access to the internet. Below, I’ll discuss the state of the internet today, why connectivity is such an important problem for the world, the major issues we’ll need to solve — technical, social and economic — and then I’ll outline a rough plan to accomplish this goal. I’m focused on this because I believe it is one of the greatest challenges of our generation. The unfair economic reality is that those already on Facebook have way more money than the rest of the world combined, so it may not actually be profitable for us to serve the next few billion people for a very long time, if ever. But we believe everyone deserves to be connected. The state of the internet Today, only billion people — a little more than one third of the world’s population — have internet access. Even more surprising, internet adoption is growing by less than 9% each year, which is slow considering how early we are in its development and that it is expected to slow further. There are more than 5 billion mobile phones in the world, with almost 4 billion feature phones and more than 1 billion smartphones. As smartphone prices come down, many people who currently have feature phones will be able to afford smartphones over the next 5 years. It’s easy to assume that when people get smartphones they’ll also have data access. It’s hard to even think of what it means to have a smartphone without data. But it’s not a...

...There are many problems that the modern college student faces. Some of the issues are issues of costs and financial aid, balancing work/school/family, access to technology. When the professor gave the assignment. I got a writer's block. I took my military background, and I found out three issues I think the modern college would have. The first one is time management. Everyone struggles with time management, juggling work with homework. The second one is finical issues. Whenever you start something new you want to know how much is it going to cost and can, I afford it. The third one is access to technology. Yes, I know that at least 75% of the United States have Internet access. What about the students that do not have access? How can do online colleges? Keywords: Time Management Finical Issues Access to Technology ISSUES FOR MODERN COLLEGE STUDENT 3 When I was doing research on the issue for a modern college student, I found that most students are stressed out about time management. "The big myth is it's easier to go online because you can do it at your pace," Popovich says. "You do have more flexibility, but it is not any easier … It is harder because you are on your own; you have your own devices." (Sheehy, 2010 p.1) When you are doing an online course, you have much distraction around you all the time. I know from experience that doing online college classes is hard. Serving in the military makes this a very challenging. You need to manage your work...

...between them. There is the free movement of goods, services, people, and money between each nation. The last one is made easiest through the common currency of the Euro. The only exception is the United Kingdom, who identifies with the Pound instead. The United Kingdom, along with being the only member of the EU that does not identify with the Euro has the ninth largest GDP in the world. The UK has the second largest GDP in the EU, second only to Germany, while the EU is the second highest GDP overall, just behind the United States (I). It just goes to show that while the European Union has some very strong economies in its membership, together they have created a world power. Imports in regards to the EU center primarily around dairy products, sugars and confectionery, and animal products, which, respectively, have MFN averages of 52.9, 32.1, and 20.4. The lowest average MFN is cotton, which is at a value of 0. The rest of the products are between a value of 1 and 20 and, for various reasons, are higher in value than cotton and much less than dairy, sugar, and animal products (II). The goods that are imported have a much higher percentage under duty-free than a simple share. Cotton, wood, paper, and petroleum were highest under duty free, while petroleum, minerals, metals, and non-electrical/electrical machinery were highest under share % of exports. It just goes to show that petroleum is easy to access and the EU wants it whether it is duty-free or not. Materials are easy...

...original business model with its current business model. What’s the difference between “free” and “freemium” revenue models? Pandora’s original business model was to provide users with 10 free hours of access to their website contents. Once the 10 hours has been used up, they will then be asked to subscribe to Pandora at a rate of $36 per month for continual access. Whereas, their current business model is designed where users can access their online radio for free as long as they sign up for an account, but are exposed to ads while streaming. The Freemium model is designed to give away some services to 99% of the customer base and rely on the other 1% of customers to pay for premium versions of the same service. In a business model, “freemium” basically means the basic version of a product or service is offered free to use, but is only limited to the basics provided, whereas “free” is the product/service is completely free access to the range of contents it provides. The revenue is then generated from targeted advertisings and displayed to users while they are on Pandora. 2. What is the customer value proposition that Pandora offers? Actual subscribers of Pandora will not be displayed advertisements and higher quality of music while streaming. The people who pays for Pandora has pretty much unlimited usage for $36 per year, while the people who are listening to music with Pandora for free are limited to only 40 hours of music per month, while subjected to advertisements between...

...Growing Up Online Michelle Krueger I agree with regards to the video Growing up on line produced and directed by Rachel Dretzin. This video discuss the advantages and disadvantages of children’s having open access to internet and the problems it has caused at home, school, social media as well as ing. Whilst everyone is entitle to their opinions, I feel strongly agree with the negative consequences. I would therefore like to explain in more details the arguments about this video. As I mentioned before, the open access to internet for children’s has brought some negative consequences. First, at home we see how children’s lock their selves in the room to use the computer and most of the times when parents walk into the room they want to change their screen or hide what there are doing. The reason behind this is because they had found a different world where they can be and act in a way that they wouldn’t in front of their parents and their friends. They find people who they can’t talk to about eating disorders, sex preferences, family problems, among other topics without been judge. They also feel more free and outgoing on the internet. This are negative reactions and consequences because we should be able to talk to our parents or someone close to us every time that we need to. We will get better advice from someone that is part of our life’s and care for us rather than form a stranger. Second, internet...

...Free downloading: the real culprit Stéphane V. English Research Paper December 2012 ------------------------------------------------- Contents Introduction 2 I) Surprisingly enough, Internet users should not be punished 3 II) The real culprits are illegal websites and software 5 III) Solutions to illegal download 6 Works cited 8 Is it right to punish people who illegally download films and music? ------------------------------------------------- Introduction S ince its creation in the 1990s, the Internet has been allowing the exchange of various kinds of data all around the world in the twinkling of an eye. Nowadays, this essential communication tool has become the best way to ‘share’ and download any kind of media such as films or music without paying for it. Despite the great opportunity that it can represent for many, it has its advantages and drawbacks. Indeed, since technology developed faster than expected, illegal downloading raises the issue of copyright. Isn’t the use of peer-to-peer software an abusive use of the Internet? Is it fair that singers, producers, actors or any artist are deprived of the benefits they deserve thanks to their work? Obviously not. But who should be the culprit? Public opinion would say that anyone who is doing something illegal has to be punished so illegal downloading should logically be severely penalized. But let us go a little further that this statement. I reckon that Internet users should not be punished...

...invest your hard earned dollars. The key to finding the best type of account you want to invest in is to be educated to the types of investment accounts available and advantages and disadvantages of each. It may take some time to find the right type of account, but, with the right information, the best decision can be made. I used the Regions bank website to investigate four common types of investment accounts: checking accounts, money market accounts, passbook savings accounts, and certificates of deposits. Although rates may differ between banks, I will also use the rates as typical examples of the type of interest that can earned from each of these accounts. With the information I find, I will decide which would be the best choice to invest $1,000. Checking accounts are common accounts that most people have and use daily. While some have monthly fees, most banks offer some type of free checking as long as the account meets certain criteria. Regions offers a checking account that has an $8 monthly fee, which will be waived if the account meets one of the following criteria: direct deposit, 15 electronic transactions per month, or a $1,000 average monthly balance. Some other advantage of this type of account is the convenience of having your funds available immediately, low risk, and you can use online banking. You would either be able to withdraw by going into the bank, or use the free ATM/debit card that is provided with the account. The major disadvantage of this...
