...International Management – Siemens Case Study Group Coursework Presentation Question 2 Introduction Klaus Kleinfeld took over as CEO of Siemens in 2005 from Heinrich von Pierer and was at the helm of the company until his resignation on the 25th April 2007. During his time he was seen as an enigmatic premier who transformed the company. The stock had grown by 39% since he took over (Global Business 07/05/2007). He streamlined the organisation by cutting costs, boosting innovation and expanding abroad. He even maintained a rise in the company’s share price during the bribery scandals publicity. Was the board right to accept his resignation? This was a highly sensitive decision at the time because the bribery scandals came to light whilst Kleinfeld was CEO but he had worked magic at Siemens in a very short amount of time, in only two years he had transformed Siemens and their share price had grown exponentially as a result. Based upon his track record at the company he did not deserve to be released in that manner. The bribery came to light during Klienfeld’s tenure but most of payments were made during von Pierer’s time as CEO. Kleinfeld pushed Siemens employees to make faster decisions and put as much emphasis on the customers as on the technology. He sold off the unprofitable mobile phone production to BenQ and fostered a JV between Nokia and Siemens to merge their mobile and fixed line phone equipment businesses to create one of the world’s biggest network firms. As a result, our long-term projections for the BRICs look more, rather than less, likely to be realised. It is now possible that China will become as big as the US by 2027, and the BRICs as big as the G7 by 2032. Within the BRICs and N-11, China, Brazil, India, Indonesia and the Philippines appear to be performing best. Bangladesh, Egypt, Korea, Nigeria, Turkey and Vietnam form a second group of countries that have performed broadly in line with expectations. We find that a hedge portfolio that goes long on SEC employees’ buys and short on SEC employees’ sells earns positive and economically significant abnormal returns of (i) about 4% per year for all securities in general; and (ii) about 8.5% in U.S. common stocks in particular. The abnormal returns stem not from the buys but from the sale of stock ahead of a decline in stock prices. We find that at least some of these SEC employee trading profits are information based, as they tend to divest (i) in the run-up to SEC enforcement actions; and (ii) in the interim period between a corporate insider’s paper-based filing of the sale of restricted stock with the SEC and the appearance of the electronic record of such sale online on EDGAR. Such threats as global climate change have caught the attention of trade union members, especially with publicity given to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2001),1 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2000), the Worldwatch Institute (2001) and other high-profile reports. Trade unionists in unprecedented numbers are joining the search for solutions that go beyond environmental issues to embrace such related social and economic conditions as poverty, dysfunctional subsidies, unfair trade and price structures, corruption and unemployment, all of which reflect longstanding trade union concerns. It is significant that concern over sustainable development should be occurring just as the world’s trade unions are coming to grips with the notion of globalization. For although the nature of this phenomenon has yet to be adequately analysed and clarified, it has taken on its own meaning in trade union discussions and policy papers. What is significant for this paper, however, is the extent to which the trade union perspective on sustainable development incorporates its concerns about globalization.
