...and services. At Product Management, TIAACREF’s “manufacturing” center, top-notch professionals develop new investment and insurance products and make sure those we already offer are still working for you. In a continually changing financial services marketplace, our mission remains simple: to provide the tools you need to help reach your financial goals. A large part of our work involves listening to you. This enables us to know what you need now, and what you may need down the road. So we begin the product design process by asking questions: What do you, our clients, want to accomplish? ■ How will those goals change over time? ■ What do you like about what’s currently available to you? ■ What do you need that we don’t offer? ■ As we study your answers, patterns emerge that guide us in creating new financial products and improving existing ones. Once we know what you’re seeking, we collaborate with our investment and administration colleagues to make sure the products we design do what they’re intended to do: Serve you. Over the next one to two years, look for enhanced products and services provided through...

Highly recommended.” —SETH GODIN, AUTHOR OF TRIBES “You’ve probably never bought a book on personal finance, but this one could be the best $13.95 you ever spent. It’ll pay for itself by the end of Chapter 1 (check out the box on page 24 to see what I mean).” —PENELOPE TRUNK, AUTHOR OF BRAZEN CAREERIST: THE NEW RULES FOR SUCCESS “Most students never learn the basics of money management and get caught up in the white noise and hype generated by the personal-finance media. ...Why Fairness Matters Progressive Versus Flat Taxes Robert J. Shapiro April 1996 Pro gres s iv e FOUNDATION Why Fairness Matters: Progressive versus Flat Taxes Progressive Foundation The Progressive Foundation works to develop and promote a new progressive political philosophy and governing agenda for America based on individual liberty, equal opportunity, civic responsibility, and nonbureaucratic governance. The substantive work of the Foundation revolves around some of the most difficult challenges facing America in the 1990s: assuring upward mobility for working Americans in the new world economy; resolving the great American dilemma of race; restoring a civil society and strengthening the social ties that foster a sense of community; finding America’s proper role in the post-Cold War world; and rethinking the size, shape, and mission of government in an Information Age. The Foundation explores public controversies over cultural questions—race, ethnicity, gender, religion, morality, and civic education—that are often ignored in conventional political discourse. The Foundation’s Project on Tax Reform and Economic Growth works to develop a tax reform program that is consistent with a progressive distribution of the tax burden, and can help promote stronger job and business formation, greater productivity, and higher family incomes. This report is the first of two new reports outlining the essential features of such a tax reform program. The preface contains more...

...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs...
