...Ice break by Astrid Blodgett At some point in your life you will have to make really hard choices and decisions, whether you like it or not. You cannot avoid being hurt, or being exposed to a life changing moment. Maybe you will even experience a situation when you are in a state between life and death. Not all people handle those kinds of things the same, it will not have the same effect on children because they might not understand the consequences. To be a child can be hard sometimes, but will it also be hard if you are in a good environment with a loving and caring family around you? In the shorty story “Ice Break” by Astrid Blodgett, we meet Dawn and her two sisters. We hear about Dawn, who goes ice fishing with her father and younger sister Janie like many times before. Their mother does not go because of the bad season for ice fishing. “After she and Aunt Helen had told Dad and Uncle Rick it was late in the season and the ice was rotten.” (L. 170) When they are out on the lake to look for their Uncle Rick, when the ice breaks. The truck goes right into the cold water and the father tries to help both of his daughters out of the truck. Only Dawn makes it out in time The text is written in a very untraditional way. Astrid Blodgett continuously switches between Dawns story about the accident on the lake, which is a flashback, and Dawns point of view on the atmosphere in the house, where she speaks her sister into coming to the lake with them. So we can divide the...

...Essay on: ”Ice Break” by Astrid Blodgett Most kids love to spend time with their fathers. Spending time with dad, means going to a restaurant, going out fishing or walking in the woods. For most kids with siblings, it means getting dad’s attention all to themselves for once – no siblings to steal it now, because it’s just them and daddy. But there are those few kids, where spending time with dad, means no other adult to make him seem like a normal dad. To those few, unlucky kids, spending time alone with dad means new bruises on their body and shouting and angry faces – those kids that never wants to be alone with dad. In most of those cases, kids even beg their moms to do something – to never leave them alone with dad, because he is always so mad… but it never seem to make any difference, and ever too often, spending time with dad, ends up in a battered and bruised kid, that’s scarred for life, both mentally and physically. Those kids are going to grow up, never knowing what it’s like to have a loving and caring father, because all they’ve experienced in their life, is one that uses violence to get his way when he gets angry, or one that shouts at them over absolutely nothing. Of course, violence from parents aren’t always coming from the father’s side – we’ve heard of mom’s being just as bad, if not worse, on the news, but violence coming from a father is what’s relevant to us. Because an angry father is what changed the tragedy in “Ice Break” by Astrid Blodgett from everyone...

...A, Astrid Blodgett’s short story ”Ice Break” Many writers of today deal with writing about dysfunctional families. They write about marital problems, the relationship between parent and child, and the relationship between siblings. In general they describe all of the problems we are experiencing in families today but there is often no solution. The open ending without closure is very typical for postmodern literature. The author Astrid Blodgett has written a postmodern short story “Ice Break” in 2012 in which she deals with a dysfunctional familywhich is the main theme. Due to the main theme the other themes are marital problems and problematic relationships between parents and children. Her way of writing is also very postmodernsince the story is structured as two separate stories leading up to the plot. The short story begins with a foreshadowing “We’re a long way out on the lake when the ice breaks” (p. 2 l. 1). We already know at the beginning of the story that they are going to break thorough the ice. The foreshadowing is the beginning of thefirst story about the two sisters Dawn and Janie and their father breaking through the ice while they are trying to save their lives by struggling to get up to the surface of the water. The other story is leading up to them going to the lake when they are still at home getting ready and it is also about them driving to the lake. It is in this part of the story we hear about all of the problems in the family. The main character...

...You got ball, “BREAK A LEG” One glance at the assignment’s title and the first thing came to my mind, “What in the world is this?” Is it literally my lecturer wants me to organize a fist fighting sort of a competition where we challenge guys to fight with each other by kicking their guts out? My thoughts went wild and I start imagining Brad Pitt look alike guys flexing their well define sculpted body with sweat dripping from that crunchy abdominal muscles. The reality was far apart from my imagination. Yes, there will be guys involve. Yes, they will compete with each other and yes, they will even flex their muscles, but for a completely different reason. It’s a futsal competition! I was thrilled with this as it will be my first ever venture in organizing sports event. Moreover, the title of the event itself was so catchy that I was so eager to promote it. You got ball, “Break a Leg” merely means there is a ball in the court, “Good Luck”. That very moment, I knew this event is going to be a challenge as I may end up with too much on my plate to chew. With all the weekends occupied in doing study revisions and weekdays by attending classes, I have to squeeze through whatever little time left to materialise this event. I was being very optimistic while carrying the entire task and this really helped to pull me through the muddy grounds when it was hard to decorate my every single step. We started this assignment by conducting meetings. Meetings were held weekly with our...

...Ave. Cincinnati, OH 45221 Dear Mr. Rowan: Thank you for your interest in staying at the Panama City 100 over your upcoming spring break. The Panama City area has a lot of exciting developments happening right now and in upcoming months. After a few unfortunate experiences at our hotel, a strict policy against accepting reservations from student groups was put into place. Without the normal amenities that a resort hotel might have such as a tiki Hut, DJ or lazy river, we have sought to cater strictly to business professionals and over-night travelers. Due to this strict policy, we are unable to provide your student group with the fifteen double rooms that you have requested. Although our hotel is unable to accommodate college students, it would be a pleasure to keep in contact for any future inquires you may have as a business professional later on. If you are still interested in visiting Panama City Florida, there are many other resorts in the same area as our hotel which I believe would provide you with a wonderful stay. The Palms Resort sits directly on Panama City Beach and includes free parking, WiFi, and a daily complimentary breakfast. There is also a tiki bar which provides refreshments and cocktails next to the ocean-view pool. Regardless of your final destination, I hope that you have an excellent Spring Break. I look forward to hearing from you for any inquiries you may have after graduation. Good luck in the rest of your college career...

...the university safer manner. Currently at Wheeling Jesuit University snow removal is not taken care of in the best possible way. Employees in charge of removing snow from roads and sidewalks are not well prepared, as if they do not know it was going to snow. On campus, the roads are fully covered with the snow, and the snow is left on the road being packed down as some may walk or drive over the snow. For example, the article No-stick surface says, “the bond between the ice and the pavement is strong, removal by plowing alone may not be effective” (Tuan, Yahia 26). If the roads and...

...First off, to understand how glaciers have an impact on the hydrosphere you need to know what a glacier is. Glaciers, (also known as Icebergs when they break off of the main glacier and float on water) are a body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight; it forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds, it grows over many years, often centuries. Although some of these parts of glaciers may float on salt water or the ocean they are made up of fresh water. Now, to truly understand glaciers lets go back to the beginning of a glacier. Moist warm air rises up from the ocean and then cools, condenses and falls down onto the ground as rain or snow. You need lots of snow to create a glacier, more than a mountain...

Gary (Vince Vaughn), an affable tour guide in Chicago, is at a Cubs game with his buddy Johnny (Jon Favreau) when he spots Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) a few seats down. Gary thinks she's cute, so he buy's her a hot dog and convinces her to leave her lame date and come out with him. The next sequence is a series of still photos of Gary and Brooke's courtship. We find out that they go to football games, barbecue with friends, join a couples bowling league, buy a condo together—and look pretty happy together doing it. | Flash forward two years. Brooke and Gary are living together. Gary’s still a popular tour guide for a company he owns with his two brothers; Brooke works at an art gallery. On this particular day, Brooke is assisting a very attractive male customer who ultimately decides not to buy anything. She tells him to wait until he sees something he just has to own. ...Can we apply transshipment models to inventory applications? Why or why not? Transshipment models can be applied to inventory applications because like transshipment models inventory applications deal transporting goods to different destinations. Items are transported from one destination to another just like inventory applications. Is the transportation model an example of decision making under certainty or decision making under uncertainty? Why? Transportation model is an example of decision making under certainty because the destinations of the goods are decided and are not unknown which makes the decision making a certainty because the destination is known. The transshipment model is an extension of the transportation model in which intermediate transshipment points are added between the sources and destinations. An example of a transshipment point is a distribution center or warehouse located between plants and stores. In a transshipment problem, items may be transported from sources through trans-shipment points on to destinations, from one source to another, from one transshipment point to another, from one destination to another, or directly from sources to destinations, or some combination of these alternatives. Therefore we can apply the transshipment models to inventory applications because deals with a source and destinations and they are similar. The transportation model is an example of decision making under certainty because the sources and destination...

...Jordan Anderson GS2745W – 1/07/2015 02_A2 – Optimism A. My girlfriend/boyfriend left me. Often times when there is a breakup, people will blame it on something the other person did or has done. It’s harder to point the finger at one’s self and look in the mirror and ask what could have I done better. Though you may be feeling down about the break up, take a look at yourself and find ways to make yourself better. This will lead to you feeling better about yourself and will likely make you more attractive to the opposite sex. B. I was late with my rent and may lose my apartment. Considering that you were late with your rent most likely means that you were not paying close enough attention to your pocket book and planning for future expenses. This would provide a great opportunity to sit down, consider your income and then draw up a budget that will allow for this type of thing to never happen again. C. My car needs to be repaired. Similar to the one above, this would be an added expense. However you have to look at it in a way of an investment. I was taught the rule of 10’s. Plan your actions based on reactions 10 minutes from now, 10 months from now and 10 years from now. If you repair your car now, yes you will not have as much money today, however you will be able to get to work having a reliable means of transportation thus making your investment 10 months from now well worth the expense. D. My hours were cut at work. Instantly people will consider...

...While all relationships can be difficult, romantic relationships seem to be some of the most complicated types. Sometimes two people can care for one another so much, yet they cannot seem to communicate effectively. When a lack of communication occurs between two people for a long period of time, it most likely will lead to a huge confrontation and possibly a complete dissolve of the relationship. The Break-Up is a prime example where we see that interpersonal communication is key when trying to maintain a strong and healthy relationship. We begin this romantic comedy with Gary, which is played by Vince Vaughn, trying to capture young Brooke’s attention with his initiating sense of humor. But as the film progresses we see how something as little as lemons can ensue an argument which had been slowly building up over time. As we look at Knapp’s model we quickly come to find out that, The Break-Up, was a film primarily based in the “coming apart” stage. Throughout this paper I will focus on the stages of circumscribing, stagnating, and avoiding and how they ultimately led to the downfall of Brooke and Gary’s relationship. As we look at Knapp’s development model, what exactly does circumscribing mean? In the circumscribing stage, communication between members decreases in quantity and quality. Rather discussing a disagreement (which requires energy on both sides of the relationship), members opt for withdrawal. Circumscribing involves the shrinking interest and commitment. (Looking...

...Imagine someone you like or even love are leading you on while they're with someone else, jealousy and rage start forming into hatred. Adnan’s jealousy may have drove him over the edge leading him to kill Hae. Even though he doesn’t seem like the jealous type, many of Hae’s close friends have seen Adnan being possessive towards Hae. He had a motive for killing her after she broke his heart, he wanted to break hers. One more reason why Adnan is guilty is because he’s a natural born liar. As claimed by Sarah Koenig, “He saw his parents standing at the window of the homecoming dance. He saw his mother raise her voice at Hae Lee in front of his classmates. ‘Look what you’re doing to our family!’ He saw the pain in his mother’s face because she knew they were together. And he saw himself, in the end, standing there with nothing to show for it, but a guilty conscience and a pack of lies in which he cloaked himself.”(“The Breakup.” Pg. 6).
