Be able to develop and lead teams

2.1 Critically review own ability to develop and lead teams to achieve organisational objectives.
To be a an effective leader I need to build the trust my team have in me, I need to create an environment of trust and respect and engage my team. I have been working with the team within the team for a year before being promoted and becoming the manager. I have had to lead the team through a difficult period of change, conflict and at times very stressful situation.

In their research Schindler and Thomas 1993 identified the 5 dimensions that make up the concept of trust
To be able to develop the trust I had to show integrity by consistently demonstrating honesty and truthfulness show competency by demonstrating I have the right technical expertise the knowledge and good interpersonal skills show consistency by having a string credibility exercising good judgement when handling any situation and operating with a degree of predictability show loyalty by demonstrating a willingness to represent my team show openness by showing a willingness to share ideas and information openly and freely.

Kouze and Posner 1993 suggest that employees who believe their manager to be honest competent and inspiring were significantly more likely to have a strong sense of teamwork and commitment to their organisation.
Creating this environment of trust and respect requires me to adopt behaviours such as: being open being fair speaking openly about my feelings telling the truth at all times being consistent fulfilling promised and commitments maintaining confidences demonstrating competence

Employee engagement is another key factor in being successful in leading and managing a team
Towers Perrin Global workforce study 2007-2008 defines employee engagement as an employees willingness and ability to contribute to company success.

Understanding the Management Role to Improve Management Performance.

...Understanding the Management Role to Improve Management Performance. Understanding the specific responsibilities of middle managers in enabling an organisation to achieve its goals. AC 1.1 Describe the Goals and Objectives of your organisation. We have both Goals and Objectives at multiple levels throughout the Cromwell Group. From a company point of view the ultimate Objective is to reach the target of “£600m by 2020.” The Goal of the company is “Our goal is to help you reach yours”. The objective is to a degree a SMART objective if you break it down however there are points that do not conform: Specific – Yes £600 Million is a specific value Measurable – The statement is measurable as we are currently at £297 million the difference between the 2 figures can be calculated. Achievable – We could achieve the £600 however not in our current state. We have a lack of space, technology and understanding of the way forward due to some values held by the owner. Realistic – In our current state without a major investment from the business or without an acquisition it is not realistic. Time-bound – With a target date in place yes it is time-bound. In summary without an investment from the company in a number of areas namely Technology we will not be able to move closer to that magical figure of £600 million. We continue to strive to be the best in our area however we are struggling with issues that a number of other logistics companies have overcome many years ago. The...

Planning and Leading a Complex Team Activity

...ILM Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership M4.03 Planning and Leading a Complex Team Activity Assignment Task: Planning And Leading A Complex Team Activity 1.1 Define the purpose, aims and objectives of the activity When my training began with Wrightbus to become a first line manager in total there were six people setting out on the journey to lead teams on the production floor. As part of the ten week training programme the operations director handed us a group project where he wanted us as a group to introduce a new system to manage and maintain small tools owned by the company throughout the factory. This would obviously test our skills as team players and was obviously a massive challenge as the issues with tools not being managed correctly had been an ongoing problem within the company for a number of years. We quickly made an office known as the operations room our base and our first instinct was to have a brainstorming session together to gather thoughts on the task ahead so we all had an understanding of what lay ahead for us. The purpose, aims and objectives of the activity would need to be defined appropriately with the use of SMART objectives with the view that our goals and targets should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. The main objectives of the project were as follows: * Identify the tools required for every Wrightbus job. * Identify the current inventory of tools being used on the shop floor. * Carry...
