...ART 2 • MUSEUM – BASED ESSAY • DUE: MAY 4/5 Suggested Locations* L.A. Country Museum of Art (LACMA) • lacma.org for info. The Getty Center (Santa Monica) or Getty Villa (Malibu) • getty.edu for info. The assignment is to write an expository essay that focuses on an interpretation of one artwork using a specific symbol or theme (see examples below). Your interpretation must include an analysis of the subject & style of artwork in relation to the function of the object, as we do in class. (Remember the 4 Steps of Interpretation). Also, you should identify the style characteristics of the period-culture to which it belongs. In the paper you will provide “proof” for identifying style and/or meaning by comparing it to objects in your textbook. This assignment is NOT a “report.” That is, you will not find much information about the artwork at the museum. The point of this paper is to interpret the object based on similarities to other objects that are more “known.” Your interpretation should be made primarily of your own observations in relation to the information provided by the textbook and research you conduct about the artworks’ style, symbolism, cultural context, etc. You must support your observations with facts. Also you must properly cite your sources of information in a works cited list. Consult the articles on writing available on our MyECC teamsite in the Writing Resources folder. Examples of Symbols: sun, moon, star, flower, halo, cross, tree, horn, offering...

...Worldview Essay Instructions The goal of the assignment is to demonstrate that you are able to practice your chosen major/program of study in a manner consistent with a biblical/Christian worldview. For this assignment, you will write a 600–1000-word essay addressing the following topic: Foundational to the Christian faith is the belief that mankind is created in the image of God. Explain how this belief affects the way you interact with people within your chosen vocation. Considerations for assignment: 1. The word belief in this assignment is essentially synonymous with the word doctrine. 2. It would be wise to select the chosen vocation that you intend to have upon graduation. 3. Provide 2 or 3 specific examples of how the theological truth (mankind is created in the image of God) is lived out in your chosen vocation. 4. Be sure to incorporate at least 2 theological references in your paper using course sources. 5. Be sure to incorporate at least 3 relevant biblical references. 6. The purpose of the assignment is not to discuss how you will evangelize within a chosen vocation; rather, the assignment must focus on how the understanding that mankind is created in the image of God effects the way your vocation is performed. 7. Example from business: since mankind is created in the image of God, as an accountant, I should not cheat others out of money. (This example would be substantiated with biblical support, and be elaborated on within the essay.) ...

...and we see how diseases can completely ruin this miraculous organ. In Gamel’s essay it is brought to our attention how the human being cherishes their eye sight; one would choose to tolerate pain in the hope that one may regain their eye sight; however, we are never shown why the human being cherishes sight so much. “(En) trance” by Chris Arthur shows the reader how this organ allows the mind to explore all different options. In this essay we see how the eyeball allows the human being to see things in a different perspective than their own and how others may perceive an image or a building based off of their own experiences and sight. We see the importance of the eyeball in regards to memory and we see its importance in the way that sight impacts people’s lives. Although “The Elegant Eyeball” by John Gamel explains the importance of the eyeball it is through “(En) trance” by Chris Arthur that we see the emotional and physical impact it has in one’s life. Throughout his essay Gamel explains how the eye works. He explains what a normal eye would possess opposed to an eye that acquired a disease, which would eventually obtain scaring. He explains the importance of the eye stating that, “Forty percent of the brain is devoted to vision, which provides us with more information than our other four senses combined” (Gamel, 39). The importance of the eye in regards to our other sense is great. In his essay “(En) trance,” Arthur explains to the reader how each person has their own viewpoint...

...never are welcome. In the essay “Living in Poverty” written by Richard Wright we hear about his own experiences through poverty which he was born into in 1958. The main character’s father worked as a coal miner and his mother as a shop worker in a department store. Through the essay we follow this character, first known as the blackest five-year-old-boy in their street, then as a teenager, and in the final part as an adult educated man. The writer uses a lot of coloured and offensive adjectives through the essay which give the readers a more intensive and exciting experience. It gives the story life and meaning while the readers create more powerful images in their heads. You can for example see that on page 8, line 71-72: “Home was warm, school was stimulating and challenging”. Furthermore, the writer sometimes uses humor and on page 8, line 60-69 you can see that. At the same page line 79-82 we see another example on that: “...I fell in love with Bible stories and colourful pictures, although I wasn’t entirely convinced about virgin births, miracles and risers from the dead.” Even though it is noticeable statements you can’t avoid reading it with a smile on your lips. This technique also gives the reader a more thrilling experience and in this occasion the writer wants to lighten the story up, in the light of the topic poverty. The writer makes use of some arguments, namely an argument based on analogy. He extrapolates from situations and events based on poverty situations...

...Canada’s own Cree playwright and novelist’s dazzling yet bitter truthful essay “what a certain visionary once said” are a hard one to compare and comment on. Though both highway’s and gore’s introductory and concluding paragraphs are effective and persuasive, both of them use a different vocabulary style. Firstly, Highway’s introduction is very descriptive which paints an image in our mind (readers).whereas gore’s introduction in “The Moment of Truth” is effective because of providing scientific data to prove we are in a crisis and about criticism of the former president of the united states Mr. George Bush’s irresponsiveness to the number of environmental issues. Highway’s introductory paragraph is catchier because he use a descriptive way of narration which he gained from his real life experiences on the beauties of his countryside’s landscapes. (2) Highway’s description of the landscapes of northern Canada paints a beautiful image in the reader’s mind. The words used to represent the beauty of the landscape. And also Al Gore’s introductory paragraph in “The moment of truth,” is also equally effective. He starts off with letting the readers about the big crisis we about experience. He makes it even more interesting by explaining the meaning of crisis in Chinese and the characters’ meaning. This makes the introductory paragraph more informative too. The whole reading “The moment of truth” is categorized based on the Chinese characters for crisis mentioned in the introductory paragraph...

...Teresa Hugo ENC 1939: College Writing II Scarlett Rooney October 2, 2012 The Photographic Essay W.J.T Mitchell believes that “Photography is and is not a language; language also is and is not photography.” (Mitchell 510) That would lead one to question where do images end and words begin? Mitchell would answer with the word “ekpharisis” (Mitchell 509), meaning that words give a voice to the photo. Victor Burgin and Ronald Barth have opposing views as to how this occurs. Roland Barth would argue that those words are written or implied, and are put there by the author. Victor Burgin believes that the words are put to the image by the viewer as he examines the photo, and that the images and words will be seen and heard concurrently. In the end, it would be agreed by both, that a reader’s emotions and experiences will guide how they “read” the words of a photograph. Victor Burgin’s idea is that the photo is a “message without a code” (Mitchell 510), and the image and the word are two separate forms of communication. If there is no caption on a photograph, the viewer would inject their own wording based upon on their own life experiences. “A photo is invaded by language the moment it is looked at and becomes an almost relic of the event it portrays.”(Mitchell) A viewer looking at a photo will immediately have thoughts come to mind, and those thoughts become the words of the photo. Roland Barth believes that a photograph has its own language that coexists within it, and he calls...

...Joe Blow English 1100, Section R75 Instructor: Sheila Hancock February 27th, 2011 “The Ebb and Flow of Favour”: Narrative Structure in Dionne Brand’s “Job” In “Job,” Dionne Brand offers a short vignette that attempts to expose racism and sexism in 1970s Canada. In this one-paragraph narrative essay, Brand tells the story of her rejection by a potential employer—that her rejection is based on her race is the fact the story hinges upon; that she is willing to be exploited based on her gender is the essay’s central irony. Brand offers a narrative structure that allows the reader to empathize with the speaker—to experience an emotional response that reflects that of the speaker. She accomplishes this response by withholding information until a crucial moment, by varying sentence length and control to reflect emotions, and by repeating certain images throughout the essay. [Thesis statement] Brand opens her essay by outlining the series of events that lead her to seek employment at an office on Keele Street in Toronto. She recounts how she secures—by telephone—an interview for the following day; she then recounts her careful preparations for the interview and her arrival at the office on the day of the interview. Suddenly—and apparently inexplicably—she is told that the job no longer exists. Just as it dawns on the speaker that the reason she is unacceptable for the position is her race, it also dawns on the reader. Brand, with careful rhetorical manipulation of structure, mimics the...

...Web Pages Analysis – Module 7 As the world of technology progresses every day, having a website has become crucial for businesses and schools. “With costs being extremely low at the entry level, it's becoming difficult to imagine a reason for any company of any size not to have a website.” [1] There are multiple benefits of having a website such as: save time and cost, increase sales, services, and accessibility, higher credibility, and so forth. For this research paper I will be analyzing six web pages. Based on the e-business I’m creating, three business pages I’m reviewing are: Essay Lab, Smart Writing Services and Ninja Essays. The remaining three web sites are: Suffolk Community College, Nassau Community College and Dr. Ebrahimi’s website. To begin with, Essay Lab is one of the three writing service businesses I’ve selected. The home page of this particular business is informative and gives a good idea of what the business is about and why would a person need to use their service. However, I feel more information to support their business could be provided. Another issue is the content is not direct to the point; instead it drags on causing lack of interest to the reader. Stating live chat availability and not actually providing it is another problem with the website which fails to meet the 7x2C standard of ‘Completeness and Coverage’. On the other hand, the navigation is consistent and effective. The organization of the website as well is intuitive and easy to...

...In the essay “On Paradise” Nicolette Bethel starts off by discussing reality based on perspective. To illustrate this Bethel uses two examples. The first example is the image of a beach seen through the eyes of two people; a tourist and a resident. From the tourist’s perspective the beach is a beautiful, warm place where he can lay around and get a sun tan, enjoy the warm air and clear skies; however, from the resident’s perspective it’s a harsh, hot desert like environment that he must escape. The second example is the view of providing hospitality to a guest. In one scenario the guest is welcomed by the host, given the best by the host and the host actively and willingly engages the guest. In the next scenario the host views the guest as an inconvenience, doesn’t care to interact and can’t wait for the guest to leave. The essay further goes on to describe how The Bahamas is marketed as a “paradise” and how Bahamians didn’t create this idea. In fact, they don’t believe this sells pitch. According to Bethel this is because Bahamians have to deal with the everyday realities and truths that come with being a resident of The Bahamas. For example, the magnificent sunshine that can damage crops, the beautiful seas that can become turquoise graves and the warm white sand on the beaches that can get stuck in our shoes and irritate us (152). Bethel states that marketing The Bahamas as a “paradise” is a wonderful advertising tactic to get tourist to visit; however, she is leery of what...
