...The term "human growth and development" is used to explain the changes a person will undertake from cradle to grave. These changes include; physical, emotional, social and intelligence changes and will cover life events such as bereavement and loss. Through the discussion on each theory, this essay will demonstrate how both environmental and genetic factor influence the development of a child or adult and how life events can disrupt the normal development of a person. Deviance from the normal course of development can cause crisis events in a person's life and it is because of these, social work intervention may be required. It is important for a social worker to understand how people develop and comprehend how life events can impact a person's quality of life and their interaction with society. This can be done through the application of development and learning theories. It is also important to understand that each person is an individual and that past life events do not always have the negative outcomes as discussed with each theory. In the Origin of the Species, Darwin (1859) set out his ubiquitous theory of genetics and how living things are influenced by genetic makeup rather than their environment. His book was the starting point for the controversial argument of nature verses nurture. This debate is one of the longest running in terms of human growth and development and is relatively simple. The theory puts forward an argument to try and explain one of the most common...

...Scholars • 1st poem in Birthday Letters. • Personal, a ‘letter’ to plath. Personal pronoun unlike Hughes other poems – hughe’s rarely used 1st person. • Personal pronouns: “you,” “I,” “your,” “my” • Harsh “i” alliteration, “it,” – trying to pinpoint exact memories. • Questions: Could be a critisism of the public obsession with his life ie. He is asking US, or could be questioning his own hazy memory. • Conjectures – ability to tell the truth is limited by our own knowledge. • Alliteration “m” sounds: mumbling, confused, remembering. • Peach || biblical apple. ( symbolic of loss of innocence. • 1 stanza – stream of consciousness • The haziness of the memory gives the impression that hughes is being truthful, although gives the impression of incomplete or disjointed truths. Also allows hughes to utilise creative license. • Juxtaposition of initial haziness with final, clear, peach image. Precise image, if hughe’s can remember the peach he is being truthful about not recalling the photograph. • Appearance vs reality, as when hughe’s described plath’s appearance – “your veronica lake bang – not what it hid.” The picture presents one image but hughes “knows” the “truth.” • Photograph – photographs only show their subjects from the outside: appearance vs. Reality, public appearance ,’. It’s effect on truth. • Appearances aren’t all-telling, neither is the truth – omissions can be made/unseen. ...

...“Successful Leader” The media item that I choose was a commercial form the Bush vs. Gore campaign in 2000. The commercial was representing George W. Bush. This particular commercial was titled “Successful Leader,” Bush for President, Inc., 2000. This political commercial was created from the Museum of the Moving Image, The Living Room Candidate: Presidential Campaign Commercials 1952- 2012. The commercial was created in 2000. It was created on behalf of George W. Bush. The purpose of this commercial was to reinforce his image as a "compassionate conservative" with his focus on domestic issues and frequent images of seniors and children. In the commercial the bias was more towards the Republican views. The tactics that are used in the commercial to persuade the people’s views are by listing the positive changes that he has accomplished through his years as a governor. They listed the most important things such as cutting taxes, educational improvement, and juvenile crime rates. The symbolism that I see in that commercial is a leader, a great leader. I see someone who can give us a better change in America, someone whom can enhance each and every state, it instead of destroying them. A person who cares and wants everyone to have the best of what they can. The media can greatly effect elections by generating attention, whether it is through negative campaigning or through their choice in coverage of a candidate. "In competing for the attention of the large strip of the voting...

...Intel® Technology Journal | Volume 18, Issue 4, 2014 HETERogEnEoUs FAcE REcognITIon: An EmERgIng TopIc In BIomETRIcs Contributor Guodong Guo West Virginia University An emerging topic in biometrics is matching between heterogeneous image modalities, called heterogeneous face recognition (HFR). This emerging topic is motivated by the advances in sensor technology development that make it possible to acquire face images from diverse imaging sensors, such as the near infrared (NIR), thermal infrared (IR), and three-dimensional (3D) depth cameras. It is also motivated by the demand from real applications. For example, when a subject’s face can only be acquired at night, the NIR or IR imaging might be the only modality for acquiring a useful face image of the subject. Another example is that no imaging system was available to capture the face image of a suspect during a criminal act. In this case a forensic sketch, drawn by a police artist based on a verbal description provided by a witness or the victim, is likely to be the only available source of a face of the suspect. Using the sketch to search a large database of mug-shot face photos is also a heterogeneous face recognition problem. Thus it is interesting to study the HFR as a relatively new topic in biometrics. In this article, several specific HFR problems are presented, and various approaches are described to address the heterogeneous face matching problems. Some future research directions are discussed as well to advance...

(S155242) Facts Russell Christoff a professional model, in the year 1986 was paid the amount $250 by Nestle Canada for a photo-shoot where his photos would be used on the label of their product, bricks of coffee. Terms of the contract between the plaintiff Russell and Nestle Canada stipulated that he would be compensated the sum of $2000 in the case the company decided to use his image for other purposes while other applications exempted from their contract remained open for new negotiations. Nestle USA in the year 1997 changed their prior image on the label of their Tasters Choice instant coffee product with a slightly altered image of Christoff without his consent. In the year 2002, sixteen years after Christoff prior contract with Nestle Canada, he identified an image of his face on the label of a Taster Choice Coffee jar without his consent. Further investigation revealed that Nestle USA had also used a slightly altered photo of Christoff from his original photo on a number of other products and publications. Less than a year later, Christoff in response filed a suit against Nestle USA Inc. the defendant, for their appropriation of his likeness. Procedural History The case for Christoff against Nestle USA went to the trial court after court established that the defendant argument of the single publication rule did not substantiate dismissal of the case. ...Intercultural Conflict Management How should we define an intercultural conflict? Is there any difference between a conflict and an intercultural one? The following chapter, which is a summary of the chapter “Constructive Intercultural Conflict Management” (Stella Ting-Toomey, Communicating Across Cultures, 1999, pages 194-197), attempts to answer these two questions. At the end of the chapter, we also include an extract of the “Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory” (Mitchell Hammer, 2002) 1. Definition of intercultural conflicts “Intercultural conflict is defined as the perceived or actual incompatibility of values, norms, processes, or goals between a minimum of two cultural parties over content, identity, relational, and procedural issues. Intercultural conflict often starts off with different expectations concerning appropriate or inappropriate behavior in an interaction episode.” (Ting-Toomey, 1999, p.194). Another author holds a similar view: “Conflicts are always cultural, since we are all cultural beings. Yet the very definition of conflict is challenging because of our cultural ways of seeing”. (Michelle Le Baron and Venashri Pillay, Conflict across Cultures, 2006, page 13). According to Le Baron, conflict occurs at ← the material level, or the “what” of the conflict; ← the symbolic level, the meaning of issues to the people involved, especially those meanings that resonate with peoples' identities, values, and worldviews; ← and the...

...Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) XXXXXX X XXXX Prof. XXX X XXXXXXX Human Computer Interaction May 5 2005 There are major differences when playing chess in person to playing chess in cyberspace. Playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) can become very addictive to the user especially if they are playing from home. Playing chess face-to-face with another person (called OTB, Over the Board) you get a sense of competition where there is tension in the air. I would say the first and most obvious thing that you could have happened playing online chess that would never happen playing face-to-face is losing your Internet connection. Whether you just made your first move our ready to call checkmate once your Internet connection has been severed it is unlikely you can recall that game. With two individual computers connected to the game server, any one of the three could lose connection at any time. Another, thing that you would not have in a face-to-face chess game would be a lot of conversation. In an online chess game you and your opponent have the ability to communicate by text or by voice while playing the game. To further expand on this point of conversation during the game, some opponents use the conversation to taunt and ridicule their opponent. They do this in an effort to distract you hoping you will make a mistake that they can capitalize on...

The untitled image published in a word press blog on the 21st January 2014 in an article written on the widening of the income gap, discusses segregation of class, widening gap between the rich and the poor as well as giving a negative impression on the capitalistic system through the use of colour, characterisation, symbolism, layout and positioning of the characters and objects. Class segregation One major idea that is presented in the image is that of the class separation between the rich and the poor, and this is specifically done through the clothing of the characters portrayed in the cartoon. The man carrying away all the cash in the wheelbarrow is dressed up in a smart jacket, hat and shoes, whilst the group of people stuck at the edge of the platform all have clothing that look similar to each other. This in effect is an entertaining yet informative approach to identifying the separation of the working class of people in society from the uncommon, millionaires...

...it is necessary to analyze the symbolic meaning of behavior and the inner workings of the mind. They agree that experiences in early childhood with the parents play an important role during development (Santrock, 2011, p. 22). According to Freud, development is sexual motivated and a child goes through five psychosexual stages: oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital. Freud believed when the need for pleasure at any stage was overly satisfied or not satisfied at all, resulted in psychological disorders (Santrock, 2011, p. 23). According to Erickson, development happens throughout life. His developmental theory has eight stages. These are: trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair. At each stage individual is confronted with difficulties that needs to be resolved. Erickson believes these crises are characterized by both vulnerability and potential. As stated by Erickson the outcome of the crises determines the course of the development. The more failure an individual experiences during resolving a crisis, the more pressure he would put on him (Santrock, 2011, p. 23). The negative feelings during the crises might cause psychological disorders. According to Piaget’s cognitive developmental theory, children construct actively their understanding of the world and go through four stages of cognitive development: The sensorimotor...
