In the book “Wild “by Cheryl strayed she tells of her first backpacking on the Pacific trail. This Pacific trail with from Mexico to Canada, which was created in 1993. After the passing of her mother and her passed experiences with dealing with the wrong people, which led her to drugs. Cheryl decided to take this hike to find herself and to metaphorically take a load off. She uses a lot of unique imagery and diction to tell the readers about her backpacking experience and how it changed her, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Cheryl uses a lot of diction to help the readers see inside her mind at the time during her hike. “I woke at dawn but couldn’t bring myself to so much as sit up for an hour, lingering instead in my sleeping bag while reading my guidebook, still drowsy though I’d slept for twelve hours- or at least I’d been reclining that long “Strayed (62). The diction Cheryl uses, helps the readers get a picture of the author’s mind. This journey started to take a toll on not only her body but her mind, which were both very exhausted .She hasn’t seen people in eight days, which causes her to get emotional, but she encouraged herself to keep going.. In this sentence Cheryl uses a few vivid words that helps us get a clear image of what she went through. She describes her mind as a crystal vase that is telling her to not give up and to continue. Her body is a bag of broken glass that it hurts every time she moves, but she chose to ignore it and keep on going. The backpacking is an example of carrying something in life that’s hard to bare but you still have too.
