...Impact of IOM Report on Nursing Rebecca M. Hemker Grand Canyon University: NUR 430 September 14, 2014 IMPACT OF IOM REPORT ON NURSING In 2010, the United States healthcare system began its dramatic transformation as the president signed comprehensive healthcare legislation into law. The legislation, cumulatively referred to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), offered 32 million, previously uninsured Americans, access to affordable health insurance (IOM, 2011). As Americans rejoiced and signed up for insurance, concern mounted as to whether the current healthcare system could tolerate the increased patient load. The nursing profession, in particular, was expected to face several obstacles in response to a transformed healthcare system (Trouble, 2014). According to an article in Health Affairs, addressing these obstacles requires effective production and use of the nursing workforce (Rother & Lavizzo-Mourey, 2009). In an effort to guide the impending increase of Americans expected to seek healthcare, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) along with the Committee on the Robert Wood Foundation (RWJF) formed an initiative on the future of nursing. The 2-year initiative served as an action-based model for the restructuring of the nursing profession (IOM, 2011). The committee identified four key messages that guided the IOM discussion including the future of nursing education, nursing practice and the nurse’s role as a leader. The key messages and recommendations of the initiative...

...regarding the future care of patients.” (Chen, 2010). According to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report of the future of nursing tides are changing. In the paragraphs to follow this paper will discuss how the IOM report has impacted the field of nursing and how registered nurses (RNs) will be acquiring higher more specialized education, ascending into leadership, and transform their practice. Impact on Education The acquisition of a nursing license in the United States is unique in the fact that there are currently several pathways to licensure. A person wishing to practice nursing may complete a hospital diploma program, a community college associate degree in nursing (ADN), attend a four-year college for a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) or even complete a bridge program in which the individual already possesses a baccalaureate degree in another field of study learns nursing practice (Creasia & Friberg, 2011, p. 25). The report from the institute of medicine (IOM) recognizes these varied pathways to nursing as a benefit as well as a hindrance to the field (Institute of Medicine, 2011, p. 166). The benefit to the field is availability of nurses due to the attractive cost of education at the diploma and community college level versus the more expensive four year college route (Institute of Medicine, 2011, p. 168). The barrier of this pathway; however, has been discussed in the IOM report. According to research, 80 percent of the time ADN graduates do not continue their...

Impact of Iom on Nursing

...A Review of the IOM Report and its Impact on the Future of Nursing Focusing on Nursing Education, Primary Care and Leadership Nursing as we know it has evolved from the days of Florence Nightingale to be part of today’s complex health care system. The demands and the expectations of the patient and the society in general has gone beyond basic good bedside nursing. Although the public trusts nurses to provide good care, they also see nurses as assistants without much say or assistants in the health care field who dress wounds, give injections and so on. In order to change direction of nursing to be able to meet the current demands of the profession and for the other health care professionals to see nurses as equal allies, an overhaul is required. To address this issue, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) teamed up with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to find ways to bridge the gap between the nursing we have today and the nursing that can meet future demands. “The Institute of Medicine is an independent non-profit organization that works outside of the government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public” (2010). Their goal is to reform the US health care system. To achieve this objective, they focused among other things, on nursing education, leadership role, and practice, particularly primary care. In writing this paper, I will focus on how the IOM intends to improve nursing education, nursing practice, and in particular primary...
