Economic impact of Pres. Benigno C. Aquino III. After President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s term, President Noynoy Aquino took over the highest position of the country. P’noy was left with many challenges, challenges that left a scar to different government sector and to our community until now. Those challenges are well known in many names and it goes with the name of corruption, injustices, high unemployment rate, natural resources exploitation, poverty and many more. But during the time of P’noy, on his first SONA, it is stated that he will straighten out those lapses that the previous administration has left behind. P’noy focuses on unemployment rate and most especially corruption. When P’noy took over the highest position in the country, he took so many actions immediately. He was trying to abolish corruption in every government sector and most especially in the LGU, where corruption is very rampant. He strengthens all of his government institution and chases those politicians who are involved in corruption in order to allocate the budget allotted for development properly. The impact of P’noy’s SONA now is good. Corruption was then minimized and government budget was allocated properly. In the previous administration, our justice system was known to be biased in their decision. In the time of P’noy, the former Chief justice Corona was impeached due to his alleged biased justice system. When Corona was impeached, Chief justice Sareno was elected as the new chief justice. During Sereno’s time, the trust of our justice system was then restored and it was because of the members of P’noy’s administration who took a big piece of it. In the recent times, P’noy goes to different countries to bring home the bacon. Every country that he goes by, he brings investors. Through this kind of P’noy’s effort our country

...2015, President Benigno “PNoy” Aquino delivered his sixth and final State of the Nation Address, at Batasan Complex, Quezon City, which is considered as his longest SONA. For the past five years, the Philippines made a rapid advancement especially with regards to its economy. It seemed that the Philippine economy reacted positively with PNoy’s “Daang Matuwid”. The Philippines now is slowly climbing the global competitiveness rankings thanks to PNoy’s advocacy to good governance reforms. President Aquino, highlighted his speech with the achievements of his administration including the improved economy and outlook; increased collection of revenues and benefits of his social service programs (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4ps) and PhilHealth), comparing this to the past administration of Macapagal Arroyo including fertilizer fund scam; the NBN-ZTE anomalous deal and "Hello Garci" scandal. In our opinion, President Aquino rightly delivered a summary of what his administration has done to the country. He had to use previous administration's scandals so that the mistakes it incurred will not be repeated. The most unexpected part of his SONA was his indirect speech towards Vice President Jejomar Binay the standard-bearer of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) for next year elections and his presidential endorsement. Our President had dedicated his term on apprehending the corruption in our country. Comparing to the past administration, we can state that the President today...

...Grace R. Vargas, Jocevic Viernes, Maricor Assassination of Benigno Simeon "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. The assassination of Benigno Aquino, Jr., former Philippine Senator, took place on Sunday, August 21, 1983 at Manila International Airport. Aquino, also a longtime political opponent of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, had just landed in his home country after a 3-year self exile in the United States when he was shot in the head while being escorted from an aircraft to a vehicle that was waiting to transport him to prison. Also killed was Rolando Galman, who was later implicated in Aquino's murder. Reaction Assassination of Benigno Simeon "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. The assassination of Ninoy Aquino Jr. is for me a mystey because there is no one who spoke out that they are the one who killed Ninoy. But I think it is the Marcos family responsible for the assassination because they are the one who had a conflict with late senator Ninoy Aquino. –Pelinio I think assassination of Ninoy Aquino was injustice of human rights because he was shot in the head while being escorted from aircraft. Also Ninoy wanted a justice for being not democratic threatened against Marcos’ authoritarian rule. I’m proud of having a good senator on that time because he only thinks about the Filipino’s sake and he really fight for the right of human rights under the Martial Law. ` –Ruben Benigno Aquino Jr. was assassinated because of political issue. ...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION I. BACKGROUND Our future growth relies on competitiveness and innovation, skills and productivity... and these in turn rely on the education of our people. – Julia Gillard. The increase of low-income, low-skilled youth in the labor market, particularly in developing countries, is a major concern internationally. In some regions of the world, young people are nearly three times as likely as adults to be unemployed. They are also more likely to work in the informal labor market than adults, in low quality jobs that offer limited socio-economic security, training opportunities, and working conditions. This enormous unlocked potential represents a substantial loss of opportunity for both individuals and society. With increasing emphasis being given to work- and skills-based solutions to economic competition and poverty in the developing world, comes a renewed focus on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a means to expand opportunities for marginalized youth (Tripney, et. al., 2013). Enhancing the quality of basic education in the Philippines is urgent and critical. In line with this, one of the discussions of DepEd which incurred on October 2010 is to enhance the basic education program of the country in a way that is least disruptive to the current curriculum, most affordable to government and families, and aligned with international practice through the K-12 policy. The poor quality of basic education is reflected in the low achievement...

Gold Mining in the Philippines

...increased. In 1995, Philippine Mining Act was passed which the government allowed foreign companies to fully operate in the country; it created backlash from Filipinos stating that they should be the only ones to mine their own resources but the government still allowed it for large investments coming from foreign companies which will boost the economy. 1 The country’s mining industry was also ignited by the legend of Yamashita’s treasure. The legend has attracted tourists and curious treasure seekers to look out for the supposed ‘treasure’ of gold that the Japanese Army had hidden in the different parts of the country. 2 It seems that gold mining is a lucrative business. But is mining helpful to the country? Mining have garnered vast impacts in every aspect of the country. It boosts the economy by letting the mining companies give the government its share of their profits. But only a margin of profits is being given to the government. According to Governor Joey Salceda of Albay, “which hosts the Rapu-Rapu Polymetallic Project, only received P3.4 million from the mining company’s revenues. The company’s export value reached P7.7 billion.” The profit that was being given by the mining company should be for infrastructures and other government-funded projects but according to him the P3.4 million was not sufficient.3 Gold mining also gives work to Filipinos. But these kinds of work are very dangerous in nature. Many lives are at risk but Filipinos continue to work despite...

...Narratives of Land: The Current State of Agrarian Reform in the Philippines ALMOST twenty-six years of implementation, still counting and with completion nowhere near in sight. This amount of time that the Philippine government has taken to implement and complete the key provisions of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) law translates to a whole generation of Filipinos, including children of farmers, who have been born at the time of the law’s passage, have grown up through the years of tentative and unfinished implementation, and reaching adulthood amid current intensified clamor for government to complete its task. CARP is now the longest running program being implemented under a democratic political system, post-EDSA 1986. It has been widely seen as the litmus test of past and present administrations’ commitment to social justice, as mandated by the 1987 Philippine Constitution. CARPER or Republic Act 9700, signed 7 August 2009, gave the original Republic Act 6657 or CARP five more years to be completed. In 1998, CARP’s land acquisition and distribution component had been given its first 10-year extension and additional funding of PhP 50 billion through Republic Act 8532. One of the main goals during the extension period should be the completion of land distribution by June 30, 2014. The program should get PhP 150 billion for five years or PhP 30 billion per year for land acquisition and distribution and agrarian justice delivery (a total of 60 percent...

...Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program Poverty is one major problem, not only our government, but everyone of us faces. It deprives people not only of safe water and adequate food, clothing and shelter, but also education and healthcare. It puts people’s life in danger and robs them of their future. Moreover, poverty takes away people’s right, their freedom, dignity and peace of mind. Certainly, in a country well governed, poverty is something to be disgraced of. In line with this, with thinking minds as the ‘raw’ materials, brainstorming as the process, they had come up with a useful product, the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps’). This is one of the State’s anti-poverty initiatives under President Benigno Aquino III’s administration. Its objectives are to provide social assistance by giving cash assistance to poor families to lessen their basic needs and to develop social welfare by breaking the intergenerational poverty cycle through investments in human capital. However, the question we are all interested of is that, how useful and effective is this program in our country? According to the National Statistics Office (NSO) Cebu district officer Gil Melchor Rubia, the poverty incidence among population during the first semester of 2012 was estimated at 27.9 percent. She added that comparing this with the 2006 and 2009 first semester figures estimated at 28.8 percent and 28.6 percent, respectively, poverty remained unchanged. It is still a mystery of how the...

Assessment of Aquino Economic Policies

...Assessment of Aquino Administration’s policies and achievements The Aquino Administration at the mid of its term: assessment of its policies and achievements in key areas. When Benigno (Noynoy) Aquino was elected in May 2010, it was a huge wave of hope that swept him in a landslide victory into the office of the Philippine President: * hope that he would bring back honesty as guiding principle into the actions and decisions of this office – as it had been the case during the presidency of his revered mother Cory Aquino 1986 – 1992, whose passing away in summer 2009 had plummeted the nation into deep nostalgic mood and initiated the request of the Liberal Party for her son as presidential candidate in the 2010 elections; * hope that the lawlessness, high levels of violence, corruption, human rights violations and impunity would finally find an end; * hope that the hardened poverty of more than 25% of the fast growing population would finally be reduced – following his campaign slogan: “no corruption, no poverty any more”; * hope that he would be able to bring peace to the country which was suffering for more than 40 years from fighting with the Mindanao based Muslim Rebellion and the armed campaign of Maoist in many rural provinces all over the country.   Three years later, in the mid of his single six-years term, it is still the hope of the majority of the population which is upholding his high popularity. ...Global Economic Crisis The global financial crisis (GFC) or global economic crisis is commonly believed to have begun in July 2007 with the credit crunch, when a loss of confidence by US investors in the value of sub-prime mortgages caused a liquidity crisis. This, in turn, resulted in the US Federal Bank injecting a large amount of capital into financial markets. By September 2008, the crisis had worsened as stock markets around the globe crashed and became highly volatile. Consumer confidence hit rock bottom as everyone tightened their belts in fear of what could lie ahead. The current financial crisis is the worst the world has seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s. For younger generations, accustomed to mild recessions of the new phase of globalization, the misery of the Great Depression is hitherto nothing more than a distant legend. However, the collapse of two Bear Stearns Hedge funds in summer of 2007 exposed what came to be known as the subprime mortgage crisis, reintroducing the world to an era of bank failures, a credit crunch, private defaults and massive layoffs. In the new, globalized world of closely interdependent economies, the crisis affected almost every part of the world, receiving extensive coverage in the international media. “In an Interconnected World, American Homeowner Woes Can Be Felt from Beijing to Rio de Janeiro,” observed the International Herald Tribune at the onset of the crisis. “Chinese Steelmakers Shiver, Indian Miners Catch Flu,” noted...
