Importance Of Being A Squash Player

The quote by Gideon Rosen who teaches Philosophy at Princeton impacted me and made think about who I was. Till then I looked at myself only as a Squash player. In between games and matches or during training, my mind started veering towards the above-mentioned words and I could not help but ruminate about what my culture was and what I had taken from it.

At the outset, going by the cliched definition, I was a Tamil Brahmin; therefore I belonged to the highest rung of the Hindu society’s hierarchical order. But then, brahmins or the learned ones stayed cloistered in their small world of rituals and traditions and were versed in the Vedic ‘mantras’ or Hindu metric texts. However, that did not define me, I was far from it. I played Squash, trained with my coach or other players, travelled in groups to different cities in my country, India, even to distant shores, many times half way across the world, to play with ‘meat-eaters’ and the ‘impure ones’ and thrived in that. I had no time for what my cultural comrades did. I was pals with people of all religions, races and linguistic groups. My friends spoke languages from Tamil to Marathi and Hindi in India to German, French, Chinese and Samoan, to name some and we shared a bon homie unlike any I had known in my culture group. …show more content…
Therefore, analyzing the profound words carefully, I resumed my journey of self-discovery. That is when I understood that ‘culture’ was not a deadend, it was how I defined it and that it would keep evolving with my changing perspectives and each new

Motivation in Sport

... There are three types of motivation: * Intrinsic * Extrinsic * Self-Motivation Intrinsic This type of motivation comes directly from the performer. They are factors such as personal satisfaction or enjoyment. Biddell (1984) suggested that performers who are intrinsically motivate are more likely to continue participating then those who aren’t. This is because of personal ambition and the drive to have fun. An example of this could be an individual wishing to play squash as a form of recreation, to develop their fitness levels, but also to see if they can master the game. Extrinsic This type of motivation comes from factors that are unrelated to the task they are performing. They are rewards that the performer may get for completing a task successfully. Some of these may include money or medals. An example of this could be a player who is offered a lot of money for playing for a football team, but the don’t actually enjoy player, rather than playing because of passion for the game. Self-motivation This is almost the same as intrinsic motivation. Cratty (1989) suggested that there are a number of factors that motivate us to take part in sport, which include a desire to achieve a sense of mastery, a wish for status, friendship, the challenge which the face, or simply the excitement of taking part....

Jack Johnson

...Jack Johnson Boxing is a sport of contradictions: it is as artistic as it is primal and sophisticated as it is raw. The boxer’s must physically possess balletic footwork and brute force, while being emotionally equipped with both high-minded strategy and primordial blood thirst. Most importantly, however, the boxer exists within the ring in solitude. It is in boxing, above all sports, where the individual proves his worth. In early 20th century America, there were two undisputed truths about boxing: the Heavyweight Champion was the most prestigious title in sports, and a white man would hold it. Although slavery no long existed de jure, blacks were in no way free and by no means were they equal. Jack Johnson, a son of slaves, emerged from obscurity in the Jim Crow South to become the first black man to hold the most prestigious title in American sports. But, like the sport of boxing, Jack Johnson was a contradiction himself: although seen as a champion of the black race and enemy of whites, Jack Johnson himself was decidedly race-neutral. His hesitation to join the black community in complete solidarity made him an extremely complicated figure: he was feared by the white community and disliked by his own race. Underpinning this dynamic was his insistence on marrying white women, which made him a traitor in the eyes of the black community and a menace to the natural order of things. Jack Johnson was unique because of his unflagging individualism and his capacity...

Overcome Cognitive Dissonance Through Advertiesment

..."disequilibrium": frustration, hunger, dread, guilt, anger, embarrassment, anxiety, etc. The phrase was coined by Leon Festinger in his 1956 book When Prophecy Fails, which chronicled the followers of a UFO cult as reality clashed with their fervent belief in an impending apocalypse. Festinger subsequently (1957) published a book called A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance in which he outlines the theory. Cognitive dissonance is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology. The theory of cognitive dissonance in social psychology proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by altering existing cognitions, adding new ones to create a consistent belief system, or alternatively by reducing the importance of any one of the dissonant elements. Cognitive dissonance is the distressing mental state that people feel when they "find themselves doing things that don't fit with what...

...networks have allowed us to cross barriers associated with time and distance, the new multimedia realm is allowing us to include vital physical cues in the information stream, introducing a physical reality into the world of electronic communications, goods, and services. Not surprisingly, some of the industries that are being most radically revolutionized are those that deal with the human senses, including entertainment, health care, education, advertising, and, sadly, warfare. Simply put, technology changes your way and pace of life. In recent years, the word telecommunications has been used so often, and applied in so many situations, that it has become part of our daily lexicon, yet its definition remains elusive. So, let's start with a definition. The word telecommunications has its roots in Greek: tele means "over a distance," and communicara means "the ability to share." Hence, telecommunications literally means "the sharing of information over a distance." Telecommunications is more than a set of technologies, it's more than an enormous global industry (estimated to be US$2.5 trillion), it's more than twenty-first-century business and law that is being re-created to accommodate a virtual world, and it's more than a creator and destroyer of the state of the economy. Telecommunications is a way of life. Telecommunications affects how and where you do everything—live, work, play, socialize, entertain, serve, study, teach, rest, heal, and protect. Telecommunications has served...
