Do Colleges Need an Improvement?
College is a normal part of a student's development in education, it allows students to learn and excel in the field and career they wish to pursue. Secondary education costs however have been on the rise along with concerns of quality courses and programs. Understanding the importance of college tuition, scholarships programs, beneficial degrees of studies and educator performance are all discussed in articles written by Brent Staples, Kevin Carey, and Sophie Quinton, all of which shine light on the benefits and disadvantages of post secondary education.
The first idea is students and parents should evaluate the importance of a quality degree and program. Obtaining a quality degree is essential in today's …show more content…
Students enrolled and enrolling in programs cannot compete or be assisted at all with the cost of most college. Brent Staples explains students are taking on large sums of debt for programs that are becoming increasingly difficult and lengthy. It is very important for students to be awarded grants and scholarships as “the cost of a first-tier diploma now exceeds $120,000” (Staples 937). Staples believes it is very important for students to manage their finances responsibly, especially when receiving outside funding. Staples statement is similar to Kevin Carey’s argument as he explains in his article Pell Grants. Created by Claiborne Pell, Pell Grants are dedicated to helping low-income students cross into the promised land of opportunity and higher education. However, Carey explains the failure of such grants as he states in “1980, a typical public four-year university cost $2,551 annually. Pell Grants provided $1,750, almost 70 percent of the total. Over the next three decades, annual funding increased from $2 billion to nearly $20 billion. Today Pell Grants cover only 33 percent of the cost”(Carey 1). Carey explains the cost of college tuition has increased so substantially, programs such as Pell Grants cannot offer students the necessary funding to compete with expenses and incurring debt. Lower income students are almost obliged to attend inexpensive, but underrated institutions that will not benefit from a fulfilling degree. Another author who explains her views on college tuition, Sophie Quinton, a fiscal and economic policy analyst for Stateline who previously studied at Yale University. Quinton first explains a vast majority of students who attend college “are taking on debt they cannot repay”(Quinton 1). Quinton goes on to explain “37 percent of students two-year

Action Inquiry Course: EDA 555 Statement of the Problem What must be done to raise student and family awareness of the importance of post-secondary planning? Holbrook High School has taken on the challenge of raising student and parental awareness of the reality of today’s economy – a high school diploma is not enough. To raise awareness of the importance of planning for college career readiness post- high school, HHS has attempted to develop a stronger career planning component. Relation of the Problem to the Specialization In examining the legal issues related to post-secondary planning and career readiness, effort must be made to address the State of Arizona’s mandate on College and Career Readiness, the school district’s policies, and the ramifications for federally funded schools that do not meet the State’s required Education and Career Action Plan, (ECAP). ...Why is a college education important to me? Some people say college isn’t for me, or college is just a waste of time, but in the day and age we live in I believe it is essential for a multiple of reasons. A College education is important to me because of financial success and stability, the opportunities and doors that it opens, and the self improvement that you gain on the journey. Now I firmly believe that money isn’t happiness, but it does get you one step closer to that goal. In order to have financial success in life, you need to work hard and always give 110%. That’s not to say you can’t have that stability in life without college education but, I think you would have a better grasp on how to manage finances with that under your belt. Leonard Boswell once said “The American Dream is one of success, home ownership, college education for one’s children, and have a secure job to provide these and other goals”, and to exceed that “American dream” you go to college, you put in the effort and you come out with that success in your grasp, and that is important to me. Going to college doesn’t just open a door to unlimited learning; it opens a gateway to thousands of incredible opportunities. A college education opens up the door for a lesser chance of you not getting a good job. Having a college degree tells potential work places that you are determined and serious-minded about your future, which can reward you with the triumph of a great job. Also by having a good education...

Reflective Essay

...Writing 101: My Trials and Tribulations Writing 101 As my first English college course nears its end, I can’t help but be proud of the minor yet significant improvements I have made throughout the last eight weeks. I enrolled in WRTG 101S to meet my general education requirements, but also to refresh my reading and writing skills, as it provides the foundation for most other college courses. When I began WRTG 101S, I was uneasy with the quality of my research, formatting, and writing; now I am confident in my ability to produce well-written literature. Over the past eight weeks, I have learned much about the writing process and the importance of prewriting, writing, and revising to ensure a quality end product. Since being introduced to college writing and the writing process during a conference assignment in week one, I have applied these skills to all of my writing projects, which have yielded successful results. These steps allow me to progress through any writing assignment in an organized and efficient manner. This process was especially helpful in the cause and effect essay. This was the first essay I had completed in 10 years, since graduating high school. I was very anxious and nervous about the assignment since I had not written academic pieces in quite some time. Honestly, I still become anxious when approached with any type of writing assignment. This is due to my desire to excel in all that I encounter. I now, however, feel more at ease in knowing that I have specific...

Experience vs. Education: a Nurse's Perspective

...realize the irony of my prior sentiment. Ever more appreciative of the nursing process and affected by changes in modern medicine, I found myself looking for ways to improve the environment in which I devoted so much time and energy. In the pursuit of improving my department’s methods and practice, for both patient satisfaction and financial efficiency, I accepted my first leadership position in the cardiac catheterization lab. The rest, as they say, is history. A new passion was formed, and the love of contributing to continuous process improvement was born. Suddenly, I needed the formal education and degree I had previously rebuffed. So here I stand, humbled, at the beginning of a new journey. As the culture of American medicine rapidly evolves, so does the need for adaptation from the nursing field. It has always been important to be competent in the theories and application of patient care. Any good nurse should appreciate the importance of continuing education to stay on top of current medical trends as well as scientific and technological...

Hrm Services Survey

...Research Project IV Nicole L. King Baker College HRM315: Evaluating Human Resources Tae Dawson June 13, 2012 Abstract This purpose of this research project was to find out how well BWI HR is meeting the needs of its employees. Fifty surveys were collected and reviewed. One each survey were eight HR services. The HR services are Performance Appraisal, Wage & Salary Administration, Incentive Pay Program, Internal Job Posting, Healthcare Insurance, Technical Training, Career Counseling/Development and Flexible Work Schedule. Each of the HR services had a rating scale to see how important and satisfied the Target employees would rate them. There were three HR services that showed the largest gap between importance and satisfaction. The incentive pay program, performance appraisal system and career counseling and development all showed large negative gaps. The incentive pay program should be changed from an individual-based program to a team/group-based program. The performance appraisal system should evolve into a “social network” type of performance management system. This type of social performance management system will bring many advantages, including empowerment. Finally, the career counseling/development programs should see a small expansion and reviews of the eligible degrees, adding certificates, increasing the tuition reimbursement amount and adding mentoring programs. These improvements should be implemented to improve the HR services, our people and...

They supply the countries work force. They always play major role in providing higher education to the youth. The teaching faculty is the very substance of a higher institution with the best instructor or professors. Compared with some foreign countries, in Ohio State University where students are educated in a research intensive environment and whose faculty is multi awarded in terms of research and studies; most of the countries colleges and universities rely teaching and learning in the four corners of the classroom as such would depend greatly to the efficiency and expertise of the teacher. Through which various activities will depend on the individual faculty’s strength, interests and the mission of their respective colleges/universities. Personal Responsibility Essay

...big choices in my life that defines me. They are having a child, getting married, and joining the military. Although I have decided to go back to college, the relationships between my personal responsibilities and school will definitely play a major role in being successful; as a result, I will address two specific areas for improvement and strategies to use in order to establish an advantageous accountability plan for the upcoming months. The decisions to become a father and husband are very similar in the aspect that I chose to take full responsibility for someone besides myself. Joining the military is a choice that was made in order to support the responsibilities that I had taken on. At that time, it was the easiest and smartest thing to do in order to gain adequate income. My options were to stay in school, apply myself, and get a part time job, or enlist. Now years later, I am attempting school again but this time with new goals and ambitions. My family in relation to me going to school is challenging. Because of the added responsibility, it is taking away some of the time spent with them. Even though the military is credited for me being in school and providing everything that my family needs and wants, I still have a very important job to do and higher priorities to fulfill with them. Although college is of the same importance, work is still justified as the main priority. In order for me to be personally responsible for work, family, and school, and to take the offensive...

...and the American College of Healthcare Executives has undertaken a number of initiatives to demonstrate the organization's commitment to ethics and support its members in making ethical decisions. (ACHE, 2013). This paper will examine the influence of individual ethics on decision making within the health care industry. It will discuss what the self-assessment taught me about my own ethical decision making, the effect of professional ACHE standards on my own ethical decision making, how individual ethics influence my decision making, and what strategies I can adopt to improve my ethical decision making in the future. Self-assessment Results The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) offers a self-assessment in which you examine yourself enabling you to learn more about yourself. The self-assessment is not a scoring assessment and therefor requires each individual to recognize the areas in which they have strong ethics, and areas that may need improvement. Any questions answered with “always” identified an area of potential weakness where ethics could be compromised. The self-assessment enabled me to see my strengths and weaknesses so that I could identify the areas in need of improvement. ACHE Standards ACHE standards have been established to help educate healthcare professionals regarding ethical decision making. As improvement on CELTECH COLLEGE accelerates, this issue can arise within a year or two of purchase. In some cases, particularly where the technology will continue to perform satisfactorily to their students notwithstanding that it is obsolete, it may be worth retaining. In other cases, it may be desirable to upgrade technology quickly in order to gain some benefit from reselling the old equipment while it retains some value. The issue of when to upgrade obsolete equipment must be taking action, as it will impact on the likely cost of the school and increasing number of students will going to enroll. This will serve to reduce the longer-term cost of implementing Navigational Equipments. This approach necessitates a deliberate decision to reuse equipments...

Colleges and universities that have a diverse student population with many students from out of state, or out the country, should understand the requirements of the states and countries that the students come from. Beaudin (2017) explained how the days following a data breach often require the institution to send notice to the affected individuals within a reasonable time. Because each state is different, general counsel should work with IR staff to prepare a data breach response plan based on the state requirements for notification.  Data breaches come in many shapes and sizes.
