The Term Social Media
As the term “social media” implies:
“media” is a place where publications occur.
“social” implies that there is sharing occurring. A sharing of ideas, opinions, images.
The social in social media also implies the tools, places and services that allow people to gather for social interaction. Social media allows individuals to gather and express themselves in a much more simple and immediate fashion. By giving people this capability, they not only have the ability to share ideas, opinions and other contents, but also (if they wish) gain notoriety, and expand their influence.
The ability to do so has altered the way ideas change hands and how fast those ideas spread. At the same time, news and any information that would usually take days or even weeks to go from one location to another can now occur in seconds. This ease of communication has never been so available to people around the world as it is now and it is still continuing to evolve. Remember that throughout history, many countless numbers of governments have created and held onto their power by controlling information and the spreading of ideas. Because of social media, many of these types of governments can no longer function this way any longer. Why? Because the technology available to a person is so economical and simple to utilize that virtually anyone with some education or training on the subject can become a point of contact for the communication of information.
The Delivery of News, the Sharing of Ideas, the Expression of Opinions
The spreading of an idea, or of news occurring somewhere in the world can no longer be completely blocked by any organization. As long as one person is able to connect to the internet and express their view about a situation or simply about an idea, then the information that individual will want to share, will get out into the world. Remember, last

Importance of Social Media

...Richard Branson has this week talked of the importance of companies engaging with their customers via social media, calling on all companies to embrace the changes brought about by the rise of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook in his regular BusinessDay column. Many companies were very cautious and slow to start using social media, putting in place all sorts of guidelines for their employees about what could be said and how to use these channels. My team and I jumped in quickly and started to experiment - over the years we have always pushed each other to be innovative and approachable, explained the Virgin Group founder. We soon found that these channels were an amazing tool for reaching our customers and the public. One of the first things we learnt was that our new social media accounts gave us a real-time view of how we could improve. Through customers comments, we started learning about issues with our products and services more quickly than ever before. In response, we set up systems so that a customer who has a question or a problem can get a quick answer from our team. Whether you are launching a start-up or leading an established company, you should start establishing your social media presence if you havent already. The approach adopted by both Branson and the Virgin companies has paid dividends, with over 2.4 million people choosing to follow @RichardBranson on Twitter, along with a further 250,000 on Facebook and 2.9 million on Google+. As well as...

Social Media: an Unexplored Marketing Tool by Local Smes

...EG1413 Critical Thinking and Writing Assignment 2: Position Paper Social Media: An Unexplored Marketing Tool by local SMEs E12 Team Members: Anthoni Giam (A0085111U) Chen Ziyang (A0086387M) Ying Chuan Ong (A0074798H) 1. Background Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have always been crucial for the case of Singapore and as seen from Figure 1, they make up about 99% of the enterprises in Singapore (Singstat, n.d.). SMEs here refer to businesses with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million or employing no more than 200 staff (SPRING, 2011). Moreover, the importance of SMEs in Singapore’s economic landscape is highlighted by how SMEs “form an important pillar of the city-state's economy, employing 56 percent of workforce and contributing 42 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).” (People, 2007) If the SMEs lose their competitiveness, many workers in the SMEs can be adversely affected and even lose their jobs which could destabilize the society. This is also highlighted by Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam who said that the transformation of Singapore's SMEs is also essential to the incomes and living standards for Singaporeans (TodayOnline, 2012). Note: Adapted from “Composition of Enterprise Size,” by Singstat (n.d.). Social media has a huge role in the marketing field today as it allows companies to interact with in a casual manner while publicizing the companies’ products. It is defined to be...
