I am thankful for veterans because they are the reason why we are able to live in such a great country and be free. There are so many veterans who served in all the wars across the world. Today, most people will talk about the Invasion of Iraq, Invasion of Afghanistan, Intervention in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Persian Gulf War, US Invasion of Panama, Grenada, Bay of Pigs Invasion, Vietnam War, Korean War, World War II and World War I. There’s still a lot of people who served in the military, but didn’t have to fight in a war that often get overlooked for their service to their country.

It’s important to thank those who served and fought in wars. It is also important to thank those people who enlisted and trained for battle even if they didn’t

American Sniper Analysis

...Maybe it is because I am not in the same position that Kyle is in, but I myself do not feel the same patriotism that Kyle does. I am thankful for the opportunities that this country has given me and the freedom and liberties that I can enjoy, but I do not love this country like I love my family. When asked to choose to go to war in Iraq again or stay with his family, Kyle chose war as his devotion to his country as the safety of his country was of more value to him. If I were asked the same thing, I would choose to stay with my family as family piety is above America in my mind. In American Sniper, this excerpt shows love in many ways. Kyle’s love for his country and family are as passionate as one can get. Risking his life for the lives of others is love at its peak. Even though I disagree with Kyle’s emphasis on loving his country more than his family, both are equally important and stress the importance of love in life. With this in mind, Kyle was able to create a powerful book untangling the abstract concept of...

Kennedy's Inaugural Address

...Kennedy addressed many problems the world is facing, placing fear in his viewers. Kennedy did a great job at including the younger generation in his speech but he fell short on addressing the entire nation as a whole, leaving his audience fell disconnected. Kennedy won the election in a very close race leaving American’s skeptical about his ability to perform as a leader of the country and fulfill all the needs of the nation. Trying to lead a country with less support than expected was going to be hard for Kennedy, so his inaugural address needed to be on point connecting with everyone. Being the youngest president Kennedy attracted a new generation to the political world, which helped gain support for his campaign but the political veterans could see right through his false hopes and focusing more on other countries than of his own country. In paragraph 9, Kennedy is addressing other “republics south of our border” in their own paragraph, which transforms the meaning of addressing his nation, he spends more time on addressing other countries which leads to unresolved issues in the borders of the United States and lowers his likely- hood of succeeding as president. There is just too many unknowns in America to be addressing other countries issues that are not an immediate threat. The opening of the...

The major decision to go into war all began on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii which resulted in the United States making the decision to go into war. Loosing Pearl Harbor had a large impact on America’s armed forces because it took out a major battle station, many men and women, along with a large portion of the United States’ military resources. Freedom in America

...Amanda Fuller Instructor Lori Mick Society and the Individual 11 September 2015 Freedom On July 4th, 1776 the Declaration of Independence, one of America’s most historical documents, was signed in Philadelphia. Doug Hoey states “It marked the birth of this nation which, under God, was destined to become the symbol of freedom and world leadership” (91) in his article Freedom is Not Free, and It Must Be Preserved. Each year on July 4th, Americans celebrate Independence Day, with fireworks, family gatherings, and bar-b-que, but the people of this country should also take time to reflect and remember the importance of why this is such an important holiday. Millions of young men and women lost their lives on a foreign battle field, fighting for this country, so that the people of the U.S. could enjoy the freedom and rights that they have today. Do they really understand how this country began and how their freedom was obtained? Do they truly appreciate freedom? The citizens of this country need to remember and honor these fallen heroes not just on Independence Day, but every day. “It is important that we recall and return to the faith of our forefathers. In our prosperity and our present position of world leadership, America today is forgetting the God who gave this nation its birth and its present greatness” states REV. Doug Hoey. (91) In the year 1492, the year that Columbus reached the present day Caribbean islands, Native American Indians made up the population of what...

Teaching Belief Paper

...Holly Green 19 June 2015 Belief Paper Teaching writing at the middle school level requires a specific focus on fundamentals and the product. Students are required to perform well on state level writing tests and master the basic functions required to produce persuasive, expository, and argumentative writings. Adhering to certain “tensions” throughout the development helps successfully achieve this goal for teachers and students. While more attention should be given to creativity and the students’ freedom in constructing a piece of writing, the demand for success from local, state, and federal administration directs the core of writing. I believe focusing on specific practices at this level of education will benefit the students’ success on demanding assessments. Clearly stated, “Quality writing is the victim of time and influence from external testing regimes.” (Ryan, 80). Controlling the assignment and focus on instruction is vital for a teacher. Middle school students need specific direction and continual guidance in order to produce a successful piece of writing. By giving the class a detailed expectation of each part of an essay, the students know what is needed to produce that. Defining length requirements, organization of thoughts, and conventions help students learn the specifics needed to write successfully. Student receptivity takes precedence over student activity. In accordance with controlling the assignment, production of an essay can be mastered...

Pearl Harbor

...Attack on Pearl Harbor, 2012). Now that we are out of the box looking in, this is what a Japanese pilot might have felt as he flew his plane on that haunting yet unforgettable mission to that bay at Pearl; for he was on his way of creating history from the destruction of an entire fleet in anchor. This Japanese warrior and his culture of war would not know the consequences of his emperor’s actions; for it would only unite an entire country in a fit of rage from this horrific and unprovoked act initiated by the rising sun nation of Japan. This battle would not only be the beginning of WWII for the United States, but it would be the beginning of the end of a military force in Japan. It was this mission and Japan’s cultural importance of war that would lead to the consequence of these pilots on that eventful day in December, for this mission eventually would only bring fire and a vast amount of immense pain and suffering upon their own people. The once fearless strength and courage of the Japanese warrior who would not face defeat upon their own eyes would be brought to their knees in the disgrace of surrender upon the deck of the USS...

And if there is a way, Dan Hong has the will. Ever since I was born, I was curious about the world. I always said yes to trying new foods, taking mental and physical risks, and learning new skills when possible. I was born and raised in Queens, New York where I hustled on the daily; interacted with people of all kinds and developed a New Yorker mentality of “time is money” and acquired a taste for Italian, Korean, and Indian food. Gratitude and Well-Being

...Gratitude and Well-Being Philip C. Watkins Eastern Washington University Content This chapter attempts to review the research that speaks to the relationship between gratitude and well-being. Considerable evidence shows that gratitude is associated with emotional and social well-being, and experimental work has provided promising evidence that gratitude causes enhancements in well-being. I propose that gratitude supports well-being because it amplifies the good in one’s life. Gratitude and Well-Being Gratitude is the most pleasant of virtues, though not the easiest…. Gratitude is a mystery, not because of the pleasure it affords us but because of the obstacles we must overcome to feel it. It is the most pleasant of virtues and the most virtuous of pleasures. -Comte-Sponville (2002), p. 132 At a recent convention a colleague asked me, “Why is gratitude so great?” His question came about while discussing the many virtues that seem to result from gratitude (Watkins, 2004; Watkins, Van Gelder & Frias, 2009; Wood, Froh & Geraghty, 2010). In this chapter I will seek to answer this important question. In pursuing this goal I will first attempt to define gratitude and I will present several ways of assessing this emotion and virtue. I will then review the research that speaks to the issue of whether gratitude is all that “great.” Third, I will explore the “how” of gratitude; I will suggest several mechanisms that might help explain how gratitude...

...Effecting Change with Respect and Humility: It Starts with Success in Your Classroom Chapter Nine I. II. III. Effecting Change as a New Member of a Community Getting Started: Tangible Steps Toward Effecting Positive Change Conclusion: Do Choose Your Battles—Wisely As mentioned at the start of this text, your commitment to propel your students to achieve ambitious academic goals is an effort to make change. As new members of our school and community, we must approach any attempts to make change with great respect and humility. This is even more critical if you seek to change policies or practices at your school that you believe to be inhibiting your students’ academic achievement. Your quest to close the achievement gap for your students in your classroom may lead you to encounter other, related problems that you are eager to take on and overcome. Perhaps there are special education placement policies that you believe could be adjusted to better serve the needs of your students. Perhaps a mandatory dress-code check is leading to excessive tardiness to first period. Perhaps you have opinions about how money should be spent. As a member of your school community, you may be able to influence some of those policies and decisions. If and when such issues truly hinder your students’ learning, you may feel the need to engage in those issues to maximize the likelihood that your students can meet their academic goals. Of course, how you choose to approach the issues can be just as...

The department of homeland security has the duty of protect our home land from anything and anyone. This might include terrorist attacks and such. Many of us don’t even know what the purpose of the Department of Homeland Security is for, or what does it do and what does it protect. My priority is to leave that very clear to everyone and why will we always need this department in place no matter the ups and downs of our economy. It is very essential to have such department in place for the fact that we need to protect our land from any illegal activity or an attack to our people, we can’t afford another attack like the 9/11 one. A country with the guidelines and boundaries well organized, ordered...
