...Water is a compound made out of 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen. Temperature is the degree or intensity of heat in a substance or object. Water freezes at a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius. Water has 3 states of matter. Water in liquid form is water, water in solid form is ice, and water in gas form is water vapor. Most people would think that cooler water would freeze faster than warmer water because the cooler water is closer to the freezing point, but in the experiment that will be done, we will learn if this is true. The importance of this research is to learn if the Mpemba effect is a true/valid effect. The impact of this research would tell us if the Mpemba effect is a true/valid effect and that an experiment may have a much...

...automotive cooling systems, steam irons, etc. Distilled water is not however, considered to be suitable for human consumption on a regular basis simply because it lacks the natural beneficial minerals that ordinary drinking water contains. Required materials: Beaker Rubber cork / tubing Bunsen burner Tripod stand Stand with clamp Basin filled with sand Impure (muddy) water Distilling flask with thermometer Liebig’s condenser with stand Step-By-Step Procedure 1. Pour the muddy water into the distilling flask. 2. Use the stand to hold the flask in place, supported by the tripod stand. 3. Place the burner below this. 4. Connect the pout of the distilling flask to one end of the Liebig’s condenser. 5. Position the Liebig’s condenser using its stand so that it slopes downward slightly; its pout (other end) must open directly above the beaker. 6. Bring the muddy water to a boil and collect the condensed liquid for observation. Note * Place the distilling flask in a sand basin before heating it – this will prevent vigorous boiling and damage thereof to the apparatus. * Use the thermometer to monitor the temperature of the boiling liquid. * The Liebig’s condenser is an integral part of the simple distillation process – it consists of two concentric layers of glass of which the outer layer has air vents that facilitate the cooling of the inner glass tube. This in turn allows condensation of vapors to take place within it. The...

...Food Safety Manual for the Food Service Worker (Revised November, 2006) Introduction All food service workers are responsible for making sure that the foods they serve are safe and wholesome. This study guide is designed to give you a basic understanding of how you can store, prepare and serve food safely. Almost all foodborne illnesses can be prevented by following the procedures outlined in this guide. Please take what you learn here and use it in your workplace. Part A of this guide examines how to prevent bacteria, viruses, toxins, and chemical poisons from transferring into food while it is under your control. Part B examines ways you can control the growth of harmful bacteria and viruses that may already be present in the foods you prepare. Part A: Keeping the Contamination Out Personal Cleanliness Washing your hands thoroughly and frequently is the most important thing you can do to keep harmful germs out of the foods you prepare. Most of us first learned how to wash our hands as small children. Unfortunately, many food service workers fail to put what they ve learned into effective practice. Teach yourself to be aware of where your hands are at all times. Avoid bad habits like touching your hair or face, or wiping your hands on your clothes or apron. When you wash your hands, wash them thoroughly. Use hot water and soap, and scrub vigorously for at least 20 seconds, including forearms and under the nails. Use a paper towel or an air dryer to dry your hands. WHEN:...

...EDUCATION Critical thinking and analysis: a model for written assignments Sharon L Edwards W hat is critical analysis? In the author’s personal experience this question has been answered by the following statement: ‘It is being critical of the literature.’ However, this does not answer the question. A literature search also failed to provide any information on critical analysis. The justification for developing a model for critical analysis, however, was not solely the lack of available literature. Other reasons included: to provide a definition of the terms; and to help both educationalists and students interpret the concepts involved. Nurse educationalists and nursing students lack a clear understanding of the critical processes and this could severely diminish the profession’s ability to articulate issues that are imperative to the advancement of nursing practice in the future. This article recommends a model of critical analysis that can be used by students and educationalists. It suggests that critical thinking and analysis are interrelated and complementary, but not synonymous. It gives examples of the model’s components in order to clarify their meaning. The model will hopefully give students a premise on which to base their assignments, and nurse educationalists will be able to incorporate it into their teaching practice. It will also provide an element of reality to critical analysis which will prevent it from becoming so abstract and idealistic as to render...

...Blood pressure cuffs: friend or foe? Walker N, Gupta R, Cheesbrough J. Source Department of Microbiology, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Preston, UK. nwalker@doctors.org.uk Abstract A study to assess the level of bacterial contamination of blood pressure cuffs in use on hospital wards was performed. Viable organisms were recovered from all the 24 cuffs sampled at a density of between 1000 and >25 000 colony-forming units/100 cm2. Potential pathogens were isolated from 14 cuffs (58%). Eleven cuffs grew a single pathogen and three cuffs grew a mixture, yielding a total of 18 isolates. Meticillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from eight (33%) cuffs, meticillin-resistant S. aureus was isolated from two (8%) cuffs and Clostridium difficile was isolated from eight (33%) cuffs. This study serves as a reminder that hands are not the only fomite to go from patient to patient on hospital wards, and that measures should be taken to reduce the risks posed by blood pressure cuffs. ...their chemical nature. This so called freezing point depression is described as a colligative property of water. This property is one that depends on the number of ions that a substance produces when placed in solution. The more ions a substance produces when in solution in water, the more effective it is in lowering the freezing point of water. Salts such as sodium chloride and calcium chloride which ionize are useful in de-icing. However there are other variables to be considered such as the effects of these salts on grass, pavements, cars, concrete and living animals in the area. As for the methodology of this project, this science fair experiment also serves to acquaint students with the essential processes of sciencing such as the importance of the use of a control, of identifying dependent and independent variables, of data collection, of pictorial and or graphic presentation of data and of being able to make better judgments as to the validity and reliability of their findings. They take on the role of scientists and in the process behave as one....

...Abstract This research study includes the characterization and examination of the physical and chemical properties of the soil present in Cavite National Science High School to collect data about the present status of the soil in the area. The researcher examined the soils through the collection of data using the protocols provided by the GLOBE Website. The data that were collected were encoded to the GLOBE Website for the scientists to be able to better understand and interpret the current status of the soil. The soil samples were collected from the site located inside the vicinity of Cavite National Science High School. The gathering of samples was done on the two different seasons of the year, the wet and dry season. The protocols provided by the GLOBE organization were used in conducting the experiments in determining the soil properties. Some of the experimentation proper was done in the school’s Chemistry laboratory and Biology Laboratory. Soil samples were sent to the Department of Agriculture in Trece Martirez City to be able to obtain the results for the pH level and N-P-K Content of the soil. The results showed that the soil in Cavite National Science High School had a pH level of 5.8, temperature of 27.65°C. The nitrogen and potassium content of the soil was low in all of its horizons, sufficient potassium content and medium content of phosphorus. According to the analysis made, there was a significant difference in the bulk density of the soil and there was no significant...

...A DAY’S WAIT LITERARY ANALYSIS Author: Ernest Hemingway, an American writer. His writing celebrates heroes and explores the nature of courage in this story. In much of his writing he dramatizes the importance of bravery in the face of death and of life’s everyday problems. This story deals with the quiet courage needed to face fear. Looking at Hemingway´s biography we can find parallels between the story "A Day´s Wait" and the author´s real life. When Hemingway took part in World War I he was wounded twice. When he was in hospital he heard the doctor talk about his health and since he did not know any better he thought he would have to die. His own fear, the behaviour and the feelings in this situation Hemingway expresses through the character of the son. The boy only knows that you will die with a fever of 44 degrees but does not know that he lives in a country with different thermometers. Title: The title ‘A DAY’S WAIT’ suggests that an important thing is expected to happen till the end of the day. It suggests that somebody waited for something all day long. (It means that the protagonist had to spend a day waiting for his death (which ultimately did not occur). The title signifies the boy's tiring wait. Also, the story is set in the time span of one day.) Setting: The story is set in the country in winter. Point of view: First person point of view/ 1st person narrative, because a character tells the story and refers to himself as ‘I’, and participates in...

...The trust, rapport, and relationship development between client/child and family could possibly be the most valuable piece in any treatment for anxiety especially with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), being as though you will be presenting a treatment of challenging internalized thought processes and activities that can sometime be hard to grasp mentally. The next step in the intervention would be introducing probability of overestimation, helping the child understand that thoughts often can contain predictions about the future (Practicewise, 2009). This would be a great time in the treatment to add material and activities like the fear ladder or fear thermometer, weekly ratings can be conducted for feedback that can be beneficial for the client, parent, and the clinician. Tools such as the fear ladder and fear thermometer helps build that awareness for the child to understand that some of their thoughts of those like false alarm and helps with practicing to reduce unwanted anxiety (Practice, 2009). The next step with in the CBT approach is to review the concept of probability, help the client/child by providing a variety of examples of occasions and ask the child which event is more or less likely to happen. By ask the child to create and record examples of events and their probabilities give further insight into how the client may be thinking. It’s important with the CBT approach to provide feedback if any probability estimates seem inaccurate, for example; he/she is hundred...

...for 1999- the present to estimate the number of graduates that they would have for this school year, those statistics would be inferential because they are used to estimate future outcomes. There are four levels of statistical data: nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio. The nominal level deals with qualitative variables such as colors and blood types that can only be counted and classified. Ordinal data measurement is a variable rating system that ranks data according to predetermined categories that have only relative values such as poor, average, and good. Data can be ranked and ordered using this method. Interval data measurement adds to the ordered level by adding the characteristic of a consistently measured differential. A thermometer is an interval measurement tool. Differences in degrees of temperature are consistent between the level...
