...Thinking Critically Thinking Critically An asset is someone or something that is a viable liquidity that expresses a positive value. Being a positive value to a company is a person who can analyze and execute decisions. In this simulation our team had to establish ways to overcome adversity that happens in everyday business. Establishing a value to these problems helps the understanding of how to solve intricate problems in business. Using several tools and techniques helps to develop a clear concise simulation outcome to better business. Evaluation Tools and Techniques The problem solving tools and techniques used in the simulation are importance weighting, criteria matrix, and benchmarking. In the beginning of the simulation the user is asked to categorize the problems of the store into four different categories. These categories are: urgent and critical, non-urgent and critical, urgent and non-critical, and non-urgent and non-critical. This is both an example of importance weighting and criteria matrix because the user is asked to place importance on the problems faced and then asked to place them into a matrix based on that importance. Benchmarking came in at the end of the simulation when we’re being asked to choose the metrics that will be used to measure the impacts of the decisions made previously. The problem solving tools that I would have chosen are histograms, mind mapping, and cause-and-effect (fishbone) diagrams. First I would...

...! University of Illinois at Springfield Journal Article Review By Sadanand Patil. Instructor: Hamed Saremi. ABSTRACT: In this paper we are going to review three journal articles based on Business Process Modeling and Simulation. These articles explain the importance of business process modeling and simulation in business processes. Authors discuss how modeling and simulation is done. We start with some information about the business processes explained by the authors then we will discuss business process modeling and methods of modeling. We will also go through how simulation modeling helps to evaluate alternate business process strategies. We will also discuss benefits of simulation of business process modeling. The purpose of this paper is to give readers idea about the journal articles, whether they are worth reading and importance of these articles and how these articles will help to understand Business Process Modeling and Simulation. INTRODUCTION: Ray J. Paul, Vlatka Hlupic and George M. Giaglis explained in their article that due to increasing competition, organizations need to make major changes in their each step of business process. BPR (Business Process Re-engineering) helps an organization to enhance the business process and also creates new ways in order to gain a competitive edge in a real market. BPR helps to redesign the business system for the enhancement of an organization. Many organizations faced a failure because of many factors...

...Introduction The Everest simulation provided several situations where multiple management theories, discussed in the lectures, were applicable. Being divided into teams to complete the task helped align this simulation’s findings with a real life business setting. Contrasting roles and goals of each individual team member further enhanced the similarity to an everyday business. To conquer Everest, whether it is in reality or as part of this ‘simulation’, requires significant amounts of planning and well thought out management decisions which allow for continued success for the team as a whole. Upon review of the simulation two management concepts were more prevalent than others; ethical and social responsibility with specific focus on the utilitarianism approach and the concept of strategic planning and goal setting, within that scenario planning and crises management. The concepts applicability to both the individual and group components of the simulation will be the main focus of this report. Clarity gained from scholarly articles will also be discussed in detail. Concept 1 – Strategic Planning/Goal Setting and Scenario Planning and Crises Management Good planning is the foundation of any successful individual, team or company venture, conquering Everest is no different. The planning process is often divided into three levels. The first, strategic, focuses on long range goals and focuses on the goals of the organisation as a whole. (Steiner, 2010) Second is tactical planning...

...Thinking Critically Simulation Review Names Mgt/350 Due Date Professor Problem Formulation and Identification When making decisions toward a problem, a manager is responsible for coming up with a solution or solutions to solve the problem. There may be the same situation that may occur in but not every individual will choose the same solution to solve the problem. Based on the Thinking Critically Simulation an individual is to assume a role of a manager and find ways to come up with solutions to solve the problem. The four people on Team X took the simulation will result in four different ways of using the tools and techniques to solve the problems. For Team X to complete the simulation members had to record their information on three documents that would help them come up with a valid solution to solve the problems that was mention in the simulation. Allowing each individual to discuss what she thought of the simulation, discusses how the tools and techniques used and how changing an individual’s way of thinking will prove that not everyone think alike and that there is not right solution. The simulation is designed to test Team X’s problem formulation and decision implementation skills. Terria’s impression of the simulation was that it allowed an individual to see what problems managers have when trying to manage a business and how they will come up with a decision. She believed that this allowed the individual to be put...

...Computer Simulation: The process of computer simulation is mainly used for the purpose of generating an abstract model of a specific system. The way how system behaves can be shown by this along with few other activities involving constructing, designing and defining a model of a system. Simulation can be defined as mimicking or imitating through experimentation with a model of some real system Importance of Simulation: To lead a day-to-day life, many industries such as Healthcare, Military, Retail, Logistics etc. also makes use of these simulation models for their routine work to be done in an effective way. When these industries face problems they can be solved by acquiring the knowledge of simulation software which can be obtained by the use of analysis and modeling Simulation & Modeling can be used in various areas such as: In call centers- Simulation used in call centers is mainly to assure customer satisfaction. Simulation helps in predicting various calls and analyzing the agents to work on each type of call. Agents are trained in such a way that the waiting time for the incoming call should not be increased and one should respond to it immediately to answer customers queries managing their own time. This way customer satisfaction can be obtained handling numerous calls per day. Therefore simulation helps in call centers to plan and manage the workforce accordingly. In Healthcare- To investigate various diseases and to design new pharmaceutical agents modeling...

...MGMT1001: Everest Report Andrew Lau A critical and reflective self-evaluation of my experiences during the Everest team simulation in the contexts of ‘attitudes, personalities & perceptions’, ‘power & conflict’ and ‘groups & teams’. Executive Summary The Everest simulation is a team simulation designed to emulate real life group processes and the diverse range of intergroup interactions this entails. Developed by Harvard Business School, participants are grouped into teams of 5 (with an optional sixth member, the observer) that make a virtual climb up Mount Everest. Performance is assessed through both individual and team goals that are provided throughout the simulation. Members were allocated into groups randomly within tutorial groups and assigned roles within the simulation. I was assigned the role of environmentalist, but assumed the informal role as one of the team’s leaders. Our group as a whole managed to achieve a satisfactory 67% of team goals, and I managed to achieve 57% of my individual goals. The objective of this report is to critically analyse and reflect upon the intergroup interactions that lead to the successes and failings of our team. These successes and failings will be viewed through the lens of the theories and concepts developed in the course in order to gain insight into group processes and human behaviour. The report starts with analysing and breaking down human cognitive processes and social interactions through the tripartite...

...Ways of training managers and state the importance In the consideration of management training the objectives of the organization must be acknowledged. Therefore the organization’s strategic, tactful and operational plans are of utmost importance, because these are the factors of the manager’s job analysis which will determine the intricacies and interest of the incumbent’s training. A manager’s job description will vary according to organization, culture and political boundaries, however, managers must posses the qualities of human, conceptual and technical skills in respect of the job description for effective management in changing times. Recommendations to address the development of manager’s human, conceptual and technical skills can be considered as follows. Management training may take place on the job “informally” or off the job “formally”, however, most management training takes place off the job states Stephen P. Robbins’s Essential of Organizational Behavior eighth edition. Informal training on the job tends to disrupt productivity and services so off the job training is advised. Off the job training is considered formal as they are structured and planned to facilitate the job description. As for the manager’s training in particular, formal settings, such as classroom lectures at the tertiary level or the organization’s own training institution providing coaching by outsourced professionals or the company’s own executives, seminars, workshops and meetings of...

...assignment of members to groups, each group undertook the Everest Simulation – a teamwork and leadership challenge requiring groups to ascent a virtual Mount Everest. Drawing upon a range of fundamental organisational and managerial concepts and coupled with frequent challenges, the simulation effectively replicated a dynamic and teamwork based organisational environment. The simulation seeks to test interpersonal relationships and group dynamics by creating dissonance on both an individual and group level, as groups and group members strive to achieve both individual and group goals. This report will critically analyse the very processes used to undertake the Everest Simulation, along with results, focusing on the three concepts of ‘Communication’, ‘Groups and Teams’ and ‘Leadership’. These are of critical importance to forming an analysis of not only the simulation itself, but also a broader organisational and managerial situation and the correlation between managerial theory and practice and the Everest Simulation. The transition in dynamics within the group between the different simulations, and the solving of numerous challenges corresponds to the improvement in our results of the simulation. Moreover, this transition and triumph also elucidates the practicality of managerial theories associated with ‘communication’, ‘groups and teams’ and ‘leadership’ and their applicability to not only the Everest Simulation, my personal and group results, but also the wider contemporary...

...time management is essential and required while undergoing a task and the person who is working on a task should have acquired the skills of time management to eliminate defects and time wastage. An inspiring quote which emphasizes on the importance of time management is: “Time stays long enough for those who use it” and from this quote we can sense the deep meaning of time management skills. Reflection is defined as deliberately examining and considering the advantages and disadvantages of a personal experience. Reflecting on your personal work will help in learning from past experience; also it allows for personal and professional growth. A reflective essay is a way of writing in which the writer illustrate and describe his or her personal experience. Reflective writing is done by describing the facts which made up the experience and by evaluating the whole experience after it have been done by looking on what when well and what did not. This essay is going to reflect the time management skills used by me which allowed me to overcome my graduation project and presentation. (Quotations Book. 2013) The experience & evaluation: In my final year study at the university I was asked to carry out a research on fiber lasers and use simulation software called RP Photonics to design a practical laser. Both the software and the fiber laser...

...Change Simulation Experience “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” - Charles Darwin Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking theory of evolution was certainly not restricted to species in the wild. Adapting to change in any corporate environment is fundamental to the success of any organization and its employees. Achieving this success depends on a key ingredient – appropriate application of change management that focuses on increasing levels of commitment to change and decreasing levels of resistance. Our group perceived the ‘Global Tech Change Simulation’ to be reflective of real life organizational change as it recreated a business scenario that needed to follow a multi-step process in a timely and sequential manner in order to have a successful outcome. There are challenging barriers to change which include acceptance, adaption and resistance, and each obstacle requires the use of change leadership and best practices to guide an organization through such a transition. Our Approach: What Worked Our group was aware of how essential it was to follow the seven-step Experience Change Model and categorized each tactic according to our analysis of where it belonged within the model – see Appendix A. We started our simulation with balanced participation through stakeholder mapping to ensure that key stakeholders in all departments understood the need for change. Stakeholder mapping allowed us...

...of my experiences of The Everest group simulation z3238040 Seung Kon Back ● The Executive Summary The team 1 was organised to perform two Everest simulations and its members were Seungkon, Florence, Yajia, Michael, Manas and Rebecca. This report is a record of experiences during the simulations and also aims to describe the team’s experiences and critically analyse the results and communication structures. It was found that the main factor of the team’s failure is attributable to poor performance of a physician and there were some communicative conflicts. A disappointing performance is linked with the concepts of cognitive dissonance, task cohesiveness and social loafing. It also was confirmed that the problem of communication is associated with several factors such as the linguistic barrier, stereotyping, different decision-making styles, the internet-network communication and different cultures.
