Capote employs dramatic irony through his purposeful inclusion of the irrelevant conversations that were had before the proceedings of both Dick and Perry’s execution. During the novels excerpt, Dewey describes the conversations as disconcerting, especially due to the way they seemingly demonstrate no consideration for the Clutter family or the killers responsible for the murders but instead refer to the approaching hangings as “festivities.” As a result, this ultimately demonstrates Capote’s insertion of his bias on capital punishment and what should instead be done to criminals.
