...Ester1 James Ester Dr. Jordan Alexander Psyc 101 25 April 2011 There are five general perspectives on human behavior: biological, learned, social and cultural, cognitive and psychodynamic. These perspectives aid in revealing how relationships begin, develop, and are maintained through the course of a loving relationship. All five behaviors, when studied, play a role in how a healthy relationship works which can maintain itself and stand the course of time. Of course for every positive there is always a negative, thus if some of the five general perspectives are lacking this can also lead to a toxic or negative relationship. As I look back over the past thirteen years of marriage between my wife and myself I can see clearly how each perspective can help to maintain, or lack there of, destroy a relationship. I remember the first time I met my wife. It was in the sixth grade, english class, we shared our first words. As any typical sixth grade boy I poked and made fun of her to hide the awkwardness of situation. You see, I thought she was cute but at such a young age I was only able to express this feeling with four eye jokes. As the year went by the feelings subsided and my parents bought a new house which resided outside the school district. At the end of the year we moved away and I thought I would never see her again but life had other plans for us. “The biological perspective...

...One’s life story can be written out of two words. In this case it’s precision and persimmons. It’s crazy how two words with different meanings can mean the same thing or paint the same picture. This poem has two words that bring a flurry of memories back to the poet mind beginning with a persimmon. The persimmon shows a loving connection between two people. “Persimmons” is a free verse poem by Li-Young Lee, who tells a narrative that being in elementary school. He didn’t know the difference between precision and persimmon, but throughout the poem he illustrates both words. The poem shows precision in the other words he has trouble with words like fight and fright, also wren and yarn. The poet has a connection with these words too which makes it hard for him to remember the difference. Lines 32-33 make it clear how he relates the words so close to each other. “Fight was what I did when I was frightened, fright was what I flet when I was fighting (Lee, 557).” This poem dramatizes the conflict between good and bad memory. The poet is in class and gets slapped on his head because he doesn’t know the difference between persimmon and precision. The fact that he needs precision to pick a ripe persimmon makes it even harder for the international student. The poet also holds out on the class information about the persimmon that Mrs. Walker has brought to class. He knows that it was unripe, so he doesn’t join in the eating because he feels as that is payback for his mistake with the...

...the novel 1984 is set in a totalitarian society where whatever the government says goes without question. The Party is able to distort and rewrite the past, including the memories of the people, but a small glass paperweight from before the rule of the Party remains. The glass paperweight defines Winston Smith's undivided fate throughout the novel. Winston buys the paperweight to reconnect with his past, the paperweight has no value except for its beauty. The beauty of the paperweight symbolizes Winston’s connection to the past and the room above Mr. Charrington's shop. Winston has a tough time recovering his real memories due to how the Party destroys photographs and memories, so when Winston decides to buy the beautiful paperweight from the antique shop in the prole district he tries to reconnect with his past, a time where the Party wasn’t all that powerful. When Winston remarked “If There was Hope, it must Lie in the Proles”(Orwell, 89) he believes that the proles are the least ones corrupted by Big Brother and they have the power to overthrow the Party. He has hope in the proles to change society and bring the past back to when they were not overruled by the Party. The coral paperweight symbolizes a beautiful, safe and secure environment. Winston craves for a safe haven to live in, similar to the glass dome in which the piece of coral is encased. A place where he can be free to love Julia. ...“He cried because he was hungry and cold and terribly weak. Jonas cried, too, for the same reasons, and another reason as well. He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared for himself.” Sometime in the future in a community a boy named Jonas receives memories from The Giver. The memories he received made him start to doubt the things he was taught and where he lives. Having a biological family, love, and celebration would’ve been important to make The Giver community more positive. The first thing that would’ve been important to make a more positive community is having a biological family. One detail to support this is on pg.124 and it states, “Grandparents. It meant parents-of-the-parents, long ago.” This detail supports the claim because nobody in the Community has grandparents, even though grandparents are loving and they make you feel special. Another detail to support the claim is on pg.22, “Three births, and that’s all. After that they are Laborers for the rest of their lives.” This detail supports the claim because the Birthmothers give birth but they do not keep the child, the child goes to another person, even though mothers are loving. This is why having a biological family would’ve been important to make a more positive community....

...in Brendon Gallacher. In Brendon Gallacher, Kay delves into the past experience of the narrator and his joyous relationship with his imaginary friend. Similarly, in OPDM we witness the narrator delving into the past and describing his sense of anguish from the loss of his father as well as the loving relationship he also had with him. Moreover both poets’ skilful use language and structure effectively emphasises the character’s nostalgic look into the past. This emotion is clearly evident in both poems. The theme of love in both poems is also apparent and is used by the poets to effectively convey the affectionate memories of the past. In OPDM, the narrator’s love of his father is clearly shown when he remarks, “He took me on long silent walks.” Here the narrator remembers his father with great affection and emphasises his father’s deafness. The narrator continues to emphasise his love of his father with “In country lanes when young,” this shows the long relationship the narrator has had with his father, from childhood until his father’s death. The imagery of affection produced for the reader, accentuates the loving relationship of the characters. Similarly, Kay also accentuates the loving relationship between the narrator and Brendon Gallacher. We witness how both characters confide and spend time together: “He would hold my hand and take me by the river,” here their childish innocence is clear with the narrator’s anecdotal evidence, allowing the reader to visualise with the...

..."Success to me is being a good person, treating people well," said philosopher, David LaChapelle. Georg Suchsland is a great example of an amazing and successful person. At the age of 76, he still comes across as a fun-loving person who enjoys all aspects of life. One thing that distinguishes Georg is his determination to uphold the happiness and well being of his loved ones. With a masculine build and steely eyes, Georg Suchsland demonstrates selflessness by always putting others before himself. Measuring up at five feet and ten inches, Georg possesses an optimistic demeanor, mirrored by his bright blue eyes that are always looking for his next adventure. Being an extrovert, he has an easy smile ready for everyone who meets him. One could compare him to the stereotypical "mountain man" or "lumberjack" who helps others along the way. Sturdily built...

...Would you rather remember the good times or the bad times? Often times one may have a certain memory that comes to their heads when they hear a song, or read a poem. Keyshia Cole and Anne Sexton both have memories that come to their head, but they are both different in their own way. The song “I Remember” is about remembering all of the bad times someone else pushed the pain upon them, on the other hand, the poem “I Remember” is about remembering all of the good memories someone shared with him or her. Cole included the technique of fresh, engaging, or beautiful language to make the listener understand that one will never be able to forget the way another has made them experience pain. In her song Cole sings, “For the rest of my life, I promised myself I will love me first genuinely.” This line portrays that loving yourself first is important than loving someone else. The use of fresh, engaging, or beautiful language here makes the listener feel as though they can relate to the song because they understand more that pain is unforgettable and will never be forgotten, also because of the feelings and emotions displayed throughout the song. Along with the writing technique of fresh, engaging, or beautiful language, Cole also included alliteration. Cole incorporated the method of alliteration throughout the song...

...“My Papa’s Waltz” “Recalling days of sadness, memories haunt me. Recalling days of happiness, I haunt my memories”. Many childhood memories are remembered as fun and joyful, the time without a care in the world. The speaker, which is the young boy in Theodore Roethke’s poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, recalls a time out of his childhood that involved him and his father during family time at home one evening. A strong bond of love and playfulness between father and son is shown thru Roethke’s recollection of personal childhood memories. The poem takes place at the family’s home on a quiet evening. The father comes home after a hard day’s work which is where Roethke states, “With a palm caked hard by dirt” (line 14) suggests that the father is a blue collar hard working man who provides for his family and puts the food on the table every night. Since he works so much and does not want to come home bitter and exhausted and complain about his long day, he rewards himself with a bit of alcohol. The speakers reveals, “The whiskey on your breath, Could make a small boy dizzy” (1-2). One might get the impression that the father came home drunk out of his mind, but what those two lines say to me is after having a drink or two, or maybe he drank at home, he was in such a good mood that he started waltzing with his son. Also since the father was such a hard worker and most likely was a big fellow, his son mentions the whiskey breath which would be too strong for him but does not make him seem...

...This is the shadow that represents her, Paul D, and Denver’s past, present, and future. This shadow embodies Sethe, Denver, and Paul D’s past because it represents the outline of a happy family that none of these characters previously possessed but so badly desired. Sethe fell in love and bewedded Halle while under the ownership of “schoolteacher”, their harsh, inhumane master, but still longed for a life of freedom and happiness, one where she could raise her children away from the struggles of slavery. Denver grew up at 124 loving her mother, Sethe, out of fear; a fear of her mother attempting, again, to murder her children. It was this fear that Denver previously held that...

...CFC Youth for Christ Covenant Orientation Talk 1: Loving, Honoring and Serving God Expanded Outline I. I believe that I am special to God. A. God loves me. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life.” (John 3:16) We can personalize this sentence as if the Lord is speaking to us: “For God so loved me that He gave me His only Son, so that if I believe in Him, I will not perish but I will have eternal life.” God loves us inspite of our sinful nature. He accepts us for who we are. B. God forgives my sins. “...for this is My blood of the Covenant, which is poured out to many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matt. 26:28) God is full of mercy. He wants to forgive our sins so we can always be close to Him. C. I am a son/daughter of God. “You yourselves are no longer a slave but a son or a daughter; and yours is the inheritance by God’s grace.” (Galatians 4:7) We were once “slaves” of sin, but Jesus freed us. We became sons and daughters of God the Father and brothers of Jesus. We are also prince and princesses because we will soon inherit the kingdom of God. II. Our Response. Since we know that God loves us and that we are special to Him, He has forgiven our sins and we are His children, then the Lord is also special to us. He is so special that it makes us want to love Him more than anything else. “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all...

She is the one, the person who I want to spend the rest of my life with. I have never been more sure of myself and what I want in life. I want a healthy, joyful and fulfilling life, to share my life with the ones I love. I want to be able to share my accomplishments, adventures and memories with you. Aracely is a part of my life, we have already shared four years together, and I would love for you to get to know her. She is a fun, loving, caring, intelligent, beautiful woman. I have never been taught to discriminate but for the first time in my life I have experienced discrimination, from all of you (asking me to separate myself from Aracely has caused me pain, anger and sadness). I and Aracely are human beings who want to be treated fairly and acknowledge as any other couple would be. If I am unable to be with the person who I share my life with when I am around you then there is no meaning to our relationship. Any relationship consists of two people who share their lives with one another. Especially family who should love you unconditionally, support you and most importantly wants you to be happy. This is my happiness even though I have not received acceptance or approval from you. I ask that you accept Aracely and I for who we are, a couple who loves unconditionally, who believes in commitment, family...
