The controversy that arose from The Dixie Chicks in the early 2000s caused them to lose a lot of their support in the US. After President Bush decided that it was time for the United States to invade Iraq, he received a major backlash from many people throughout Europe. Nevertheless, many American country artists, country fans, and other pro-war individuals were supporting the idea of going to war with Iraq but there laid an outlier in this group of people. The Dixie Chicks shared their thought on going to the war, as Maines says, “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas.” Even though they received applause from the European audience, their loose language towards President Bush angered many Americans. Throughout the Dixie Chicks’ documentary, the most useful lens is the cultural lens because this trailer shows a lot of what happened from the majority of the public. People would sit out buckets for people to come and dump out all of their Dixie Chicks’ CDs. Also, the protests that took place around the country and the Chicks received negative letters. All of these actions that the public took to “harm” the Chicks was because of a cultural backlash. Furthermore, the Dixie Chick’s were a progressive country music group because they made use of pop and alternative music to please their progressive fans. However, many traditional country artists were traditional and they liked their music to be the way that it has always been.
