...new universities in developing provinces of Turkey. This is a response to pressure coming from local MPs who in turn voice the demands of their constituencies. However, while the already existing 85 universities are wrestling with financial and academic difficulties, it does not seem to be a good idea to add new universities to the system of higher education. First of all, the new universities will experience staffing problems. That is, they will have difficulty finding faculty that is qualified to teach in these budding universities. In our country the number of academicians who meet the academic requirements is limited. New universities will have two choices: either to draw from the existing pool or to employ under qualified people. To attract those instructors from other universities they will have to offer attractive incentives . However, since these will be state universities they will not have the necessary funds and most academics will be unwilling to go to small town universities where academic and life standards are below par. The only venue open to these universities will be to employ local professionals or under qualified instructors. The inevitable result will follow: a drop in the quality of education. In addition to recruitment problems, small town universities will have financial difficulties. The funds allocated to them by the state will not be enough to build from scratch all the facilities that make a university a "real university". A university is more...

University Learning

...Every experience in life comes with its own set of challenges to overcome, and university is no exception. Urquhart and Pooley (2007: 78) believe that students making the transition from high school to university experience “social, academic and personal challenges.” The purpose of this essay is to argue why the freedom, demands and social climate of universities are difficult to prepare for. In high school students have little or no academic and social freedom. In addition students only balance their school work with extracurricular activities and they learn passively. Lastly the high school society does not allow the consumption of alcohol and students are in regular contact with the same people. Snyders, Vawda, Taljaard, Brophy and Plaatjes (2006: 186) state that “at a tertiary institution, you have the freedom to choose how you will live and balance.” Freedom is defined as” having the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants” (Soanes and Hawker,2006: 400). Freedom is not simulated in high school because students are constantly under the authority of their parents or guardians. For the first time in a student’s life they are able to live alone and make their own rules (Rugg, Gerrard, and Hooper, 2008: 74). As a result of going from a life where students are constantly being watched, to one where they have the freedom to do whatever they like (Snyders et al, 2005: 186) students spend the majority of the school night socialising at parties (Burns, 2006: vi; Balduf...

Details of the budget show that there is a decrease for the Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) for both the academic programs and the UP system administration (UPSA), as well as for the six (6) autonomous campuses of UP, including UP College of Baguio. Hence, she called on the Chancellors of the different autonomous campuses and the Dean of UP Baguio to discuss with them the reduced budget and how will the reduced budget for autonomous campuses be allocated more effectively. Each Chancellor gave his/her own allocation method, taking into consideration the specific needs of his/her campus. Moreover, the VP knows that aside from the Chancellors, other parties are also involved in the budget allocation, such as the Congress, which is politically-driven. The VP also asked the officers from the Budget...

The University in Chains

...The book “The University in Chains: Confronting the Military, Industrial and Academic Complex discusses how democracy is disappearing on university campuses across America and the rise of “ideologies and practices in militarization, corporatism and political fundamentalism” (1) is taking its place. The author gives many possible directions for hope but still his writings lack possible more in depth directions to stop this growing trend. The author defends this with discussing how this type of logic is exactly what he is fighting against. Pre-written instructions that society has become so used to that it doesn’t know what direction to go when faced with difficulty and if it wasn’t taught that way then don’t do it that way. Democracy is something we hear more and more since the beginning of the Iraq war up to the next presidential election. But one question this book asks and as scholars we must ask ourselves, “Is our society, in all aspects, really democratic?” In the first essay of the book Giroux discusses how universities have become bedfellows with the American war machine. Giving the reader a raw look at how far universities have become militarized. The beginnings can be traced back to the post-WWII years. Giroux argues that even though it has been at least 50 years since this invasion of militarism into universities, since 911 this militarism has spread beyond the walls of the university into mainstream society. The concept of militarism is the dominance of...

What Is the University for

...University: more than producing job qualifiers Modern Universities are divided into different departments: social sciences, science and engineering, management and economics. These schools teach students how to acquire some skills and get all kinds of certificates. After graduating from the universities, students seek a job using these skills and certificates. It seems to be all universities are about: teaching students how to survive in society. However, university is a place different from the society. What’s the meaning of staying in university if all you care about is society? University should teach students who they are, what are they living for, and how to living their lives. First of all, university should teach students who they are. It may seem strange. We all know who we are: we have different names, different appearances. However, this name and appearance only parts of who we are. What’s more important is the inner uniqueness. Everyone is unique, therefore, we must know what we are different from each other. Understanding the uniqueness of people is an important task for us to complete. Furthermore, university should also teach students what they are living for. There must be some reasons why we are living in the world. Otherwise human is just an animal that can do some high-level jobs. Animals living just for survival, but that is not the case for people. People should live for something beyond survival. The reality is that not everyone knows what they are living...

The Function of a University

...Essay on The Function of a University The university occupies a place of overwhelming importance in our educational system. All our eyes are turned towards it. The universities in our country were originally planned by our colonial rulers to be factories for producing, on a large scale, certified clerks and copyists. Hence, the function of an India University was for a long time to test the students, after a prescribed course of studies has been completed in the colleges. Nominal provision was made for the study of law, medicine and engineering and commerce. And so a vicious system has grown up; teachers help the students to memories for examination; students cram and load their mind with the odds and ends of learning; papers-setters demand of the examines a moderate reproductions of what they have memorized. A country excepts its universities to provide leadership for different filed of the society. A University as the seat of higher learning may be said to have succeeded in its primary mission if it has given us leaders. It is not merely an examining body but has to serve as a centre of high academic studies and research. But an Indian University with decided bias for arts and commerce is only turning out graduates. The complaint that our graduates are unemployed is a charge not against the University, which is not an employment bureau, but against the State whose duty is to remove unemployment. To require a University to find employment for her alumni will be a diversion...

University Learning

...Students have different reasons as to why they enrol in university. According to The National Union of Students (2008; pp.3-4) 95% of students attend university in order to make a career for themselves, 67 % attend university because of social and economic expectations and 57% of students enrol in tertiary education in order to improve themselves. Whatever may be the reason or field of study, certain skills are required for the success in university and most students who graduate from higher education may have attained these particular skills; also known as employability skills defined by Robinson (2000; p.1) as “the basic skills necessary for getting, keeping and doing well in a job”, which inevitably benefit graduates when entering the corporate world. This argument shall elaborate and evaluate skills acquired and developed within a university setting with both positive and negative influences, by applying certain skills to particular examples of everyday situations within the corporate world and the community. This argument shall break down the main attributes of critical thinking with reference to research done by reputable authors. The importance and relevance of academic writing and critical literacy shall also be cross examined with the main elements of corporate writing, also referred to as business writing.
