There are many ways that a fully operational health information system can help alleviate the high cost of healthcare in the U.S. Each year, the U.S. spends approximately $1.7 trillion in healthcare costs, but yet our system still delivers poor health quality (Hillstead, R. 2005). Investing in health information systems however, the results have been an increase in efficiency, and a savings of about $77 billion or more annually (Hillstead, R. 2005).
