You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure that you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts; do not get distracted by doing analyses that apply political, economic, religious, or legal perspectives. Describe, compare, and apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the topics. Explain how the theories and perspectives would analyze the issue. What are the ethical issues? Where are there breaches of ethical behavior? How could each theory help us think about what would constitute virtuous or ethical behavior?

Cmp9500B Comprehensive Exam Solution

...Question 1: Theory Theories play a vitally important role in guiding research and organizing and making sense of research findings. In spite of the great importance of theory-building and theory testing within your field of specialization, there is no generally accepted conception of what a theory is. Because your dissertation must contribute to theory, you must have a clear understanding of the variety of conceptions of theory, types of theories, and ways of contributing to theory and be able to justify how, exactly, your study contributes to theory. Part 1 Using Gelso (2006), Harlow (2009), Stam, H. (2007, 2010), Wacker (1999), and five additional peer-reviewed articles from your specialization, discuss scholarly views on the nature and types of theory. Compare and contrast at least three views of what constitutes a theory, including the view you will use in Part 3 of this question. Be sure to distinguish theory from related concepts, such as hypothesis, paradigm, model, and concept. Part 2 Using Ellis & Levy (2008), Harlow, E. (2009), and five additional peer-reviewed articles, review the scholarly literature on the relationship between theory and research and the ways research (quantitative and qualitative) can contribute to theory. Discuss at least three ways research can contribute to theory. Part 3 Pick a theory (in one of the views of what constitutes a theory that you identified in Part 1) of current interest directly related to the topic area of your dissertation...

Ethics

...MOCK EXAM PAPER Ethics in Business and Society Exam Paper 2015-2016 Exam duration: 1.5 hours Answer ONE of the following FOUR questions. All questions have been written deliberately to direct you to answer using virtue ethics. You must demonstrate your knowledge of this ethical framework and the principles you are using to inform your answer and show how they are relevant in each case. 1. You work for an under-water exploration company. Your dearest friend is on exercises in a company submersible and there has been an explosion while the submersible is under the sea carrying out tests. Your friend is in an air locker, isolated from 20 crew. If the air locker is flooded the 20 crew will be saved but your closest companion will die. There is a slim chance that everyone can be rescued but it will take four hours - and if that attempt fails the ship will be so damaged that all the crew will be lost. Use virtue ethical theory to decide whether to kill your loved one to save 20 lives, or of taking a risk by waiting, knowing that you could perhaps save all 21 people or perhaps cause all their deaths. 2. ‘A listed company’s duty is to its shareholders and only to its shareholders’. Discuss this statement, using virtue ethical theory to argue for and against this statement. 3. As you sit in the exam room writing your answer to a question, you look up and see that a class-mate is looking at notes they have hidden up their sleeves. This is not only breaking the...

Module 3

...Egoism: This theory looks at an action in light of these consequences for only one entity, the person deciding whether an action is ethical. In other words, if an action is good for me, then it is ethical. The plus of that theory is that it is easy to apply--you need only look at a proposed action, figure out the consequences for you and if they are good then the action is ethical. The minus of the theory is that it obviously leads to many conclusions that most would agree are not ethical. Suppose you have a baby food plant and have some rotten fruit If it would be economically feasible to use that fruit (amount in profits vs. amount in lawsuits and lost public relations) then it would be absolutely ethical to use that fruit. Apply that example to out of date medications in the third world and you can see that it might be hard to make a straight-faced argument that this theory promotes what most think of as ethical outcomes. Think VERY carefully before you use this theory to justify any conclusion in today's business world. Libertarianism: This theory is a little more nuanced. You are still looking at only one aspect of the situation and that is how it upholds or promotes liberty, but you need to look at how the action upholds or promotes liberty for all those who might have rights. This theory looks at whether an action violates anyone's' liberty and liberty is defined as the right to property you have legally acquired and the right to be free from the unwanted or unagreed-to...

Ethics

...or a theory or system of moral values. High ethical values are very important to have as individuals, and even more important to have within a corporation. Yet ethics do not always seem to get the focus that they deserve. All one has to do is turn their attention to high-profile scandals [that] cast a shadow, reminding us about the consequences of unethical behavior and shady business practices to realize that high moral ethics are not getting the attention that it deserves. When most people think of ethics (or morals), they think of rules for distinguishing between right and wrong, such as the Golden Rule ("Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"), a code of professional conduct like the Hippocratic Oath ("First of all, do no harm"), a religious creed like the Ten Commandments ("Thou Shalt not kill..."), or a wise aphorisms like the sayings of Confucius. This is the most common way of defining "ethics": norms for conduct that distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Most people learn ethical norms at home, at school, in church, or in other social settings. Although most people acquire their sense of right and wrong during childhood, moral development occurs throughout life and human beings pass through different stages of growth as they mature. Ethical norms are so ubiquitous that one might be tempted to regard them as simple commonsense. On the other hand, if morality were nothing more than commonsense, then why are there so many ethical disputes...
