Independent Learning- Benefit and Drawbacks

Independent learning generally means learning by doing. In this type of learning a person takes the charge of his own learning. It is an ability of the people to select his learning process and contents. Independent learning is just opposite to guided learning. In guided learning process of learning, subject matter, source of learning and the ways of learning are predetermined as well as given.

Discussion-

There are five major steps of independent learning-

1. Identifying the target of the learner

2. Identifying the useful resources and learning

3. Identifying study time and making a plan

4. Self-test or evaluation

5. Using the learning in daily life.

1. Learning is a wider concept. Its boundary and scope are neither limited nor simple. It is not an easy matter to specify the target of learning for an individual. Moreover the individuals’ justification may not match the demand of the market. Now a day learning is largely concerned with the job requirement. Thus in general academic learning the concept of independent learning is not suitable. So selection of target in independent learning if very difficult.

2. Resource identification in independent learning is a time consuming task. A learner is assumed to be not informed of all the resources of his targeted learning. In such a case wrong resource selection may be misleading and resulted in incomplete learning.

3. A learner may enjoy better independence in the case of determining his study time and to design study plan. But when the learner belongs to an academic institution he or she will have to tailor the personal study time and plan with that of the academy.

4. Self assessment is one of the best way to estimate the progress of learning. But there is no best fit measurement technique in this

Independent Learning

...Independent learning is the most effective methods of study. To what extent do you agree? It is generally accepted that there have been many immense learning methods impacting to success in the field of education. Nowadays, beside some traditional learning methods, typical as the lecture method, the one of the best learning options is independent learning which is becoming increasingly important for students. There is no doubt that studying independently, especially in higher education, can be a frustrating and sometimes confused experience. But while independent learning has its drawbacks, the disadvantages are far outweighed by the advantages. Independent learning does not mean learning without a tutor or classmates. In generally, most students confuse when they are encouraged to studying independently. This is a misunderstanding. In fact, independent learning, which is also called “self-learning”, means learning motivate with or without the help of others in study. The independent student s do not have to know everything by themselves or they are also not expected to be a talent who do not need any support from others. On the contrary, independent learners who are capable of working individually or in a group becoming a problem- solver. Independent learning has many obvious benefits...

Independent Learning

...Reflection of Independent learning At the beginning, I think my listening skill needs to be improved and my vocabulary is too small too. So I wanted to improve my English listening skill and enlarge my vocabulary through this independent learning activity. What’s more, I also wanted to know some techniques of taking tests, and know differences between British English and American English, and what features does British English or American English has. Last, since I’ve never done a presentation before, so I wanted to grasp some skills and tips to apply on my presentations. In order to achieve those goals, I selected many activities which train the listening skill such as learn English through movies, lyrics training BBC Podcasts, and help to enlarge my vocabulary such as word dynamo, Free rice. I also selected some activities which contain simulated tests and some tips about how to write an outstanding article. Besides, I thought that activities sharing the presentation skills also worth to take, so I put them into my calendar. Then, according to my calendar, I do corresponding activities from the independent learning website. When I practice my listening skill by doing the activities I selected, I tried to listen to each word that had been spoken in the activities, and listen to the same movie or song twice, then take the corresponding tests it has. When I do vocabulary activities, I would look up the dictionary when I encounter an unfamiliar word, and read the word out loud...

Importance of Independent Learning

...Why it is important that I understand what independent learning is? By: Catia Marques As Social Creatures we have the desire to learn, this desire is cultivated during our early development when we learn, through participation (Berk 2008). In these early stages of learning, cognitive, metacognitive and effective skills are developed. These are vital skills for a student to comprehend independent learning. Knowing and understanding the value of ‘independent learning’ has been considered the core basis for a successful academic journey. In other words, ‘independent learning’ is the foundation for students becoming confident self-regulated life-long learners, Koper and Tattersall (2004). Although, ‘independent learning’ is not a new concept, Broad, (2006) believes that there seems to be a lack of agreement on what it actually means.   However, the intention of this paper, therefore is to analyse the meaning of ‘independent learning’ and the important influence it has on a student’s academic performance. This paper will also evaluate the impact of teaching modes on the learner’s education experience. Therefore in order to understand the importance of ‘independent learning’, one must look into its meaning to fully comprehend its value and benefits. Kesten,(1987) defines ‘independent learning’ as the “acquisition of knowledge free of external control by a self-motivated learner that willingly and appropriately identifies and uses resources available to make decisions to meet...

Mathematical Dependent vs Independent Variables

...terms of x, then y is known as a dependent variable (and x is an independent variable). Statistics In a statistics experiment, the dependent variable is the event studied and expected to change whenever the independent variable is altered.[1] Modelling In mathematical modelling, the dependent variable is studied to see if and how much it varies as the independent variables vary. In the simple stochastic linear model the term is the i th value of the dependent variable and is i th value of the independent variable. The term is known as the "error" and contains the variability of the dependent variable not explained by the independent variable. With multiple independent variables, the expression is: , where n is the number of independent variables. Simulation In simulation, the dependent variable is changed in response to changes in the independent variables. Statistics Synonyms Independent variable An independent variable is also known as a "predictor variable", "regressor", "controlled variable", "manipulated variable", "explanatory variable", "exposure variable" (see reliability theory), "risk factor" (see medical statistics), "feature" (in machine learning and pattern recognition) or an "input variable."[2][3] "Explanatory variable" is preferred by some authors over "independent variable" when the quantities treated as "independent variables" may not be statistically independent.[4][5] Independent variable(s) may be of these kinds: continuous variable(s), binary/dichotomous...

Trump Won’t Go Forward with Debate

...Won’t Go Forward With Debate By JEREMY W. PETERS Donald J. Trump has dropped plans to moderate a presidential debate, but don’t expect him to fade quietly from the political scene. In fact, Republicans may have gotten more than they bargained for by shunning him. Mr. Trump’s statement on Tuesday that he was bowing out of the Newsmax debate seemed certain to open the door to another round of “I just might …” threats from the real estate mogul. “It is very important to me that the right Republican candidate be chosen to defeat the failed and very destructive Obama administration,” Mr. Trump said in his statement. “But if that Republican, in my opinion, is not the right candidate, I am not willing to give up my right to run as an independent candidate.” Mr. Trump drew considerable criticism from the Republican establishment for moderating a presidential debate while openly saying that he might still run if he was displeased with the candidates. Rather than go ahead with the debate and declare that he will not run — Mr. Trump has flirted with running for president several times since the 1980s but has always decided not to follow through — he chose to drop the debate. “I must leave all of my options open because, above all else, we must make America great again!” he said. Mr. Trump was facing a potentially awkward task: moderating a debate that only two candidates said they would attend. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were the only two Republicans who agreed to participate...

Arla's Foods

...1. The Arla Company did a good job in overcoming potential barriers through this one-way communication method. This is evident in the way the company acknowledged that their local newspaper was responsible for the controversy and is in fact at fault, yet they are included to be blamed. They also agree and understand that the public have every right to feel offended and outraged by the newspaper’s actions. In addition, they also shared their opinion about the matter, clearly indicating that they are opposed to it as well. Although this statement was delivered through a one-way communication route, it gives the audience perspective from the company, seeing as to how the company is being blamed. It also provides them with appreciation, in the sense that the Arla Company are being understanding of the public and are trying to clear up the issue as much as possible. 2. Personally, I think that the most impressive statement in the article is as follows: “However, Arla’s business in the Middle East has been affected not by its own actions, but because of the actions of others.” This is because this statement is true and it is what the entire article is centered about. The local newspaper’s actions have not only caused an issue for their business but for other Danish businesses as well, in this case, the Arla Company. This simple statement reinforces the truth, seeing as that the actions of the controversy were never indeed initiated by the Arla Company. 3. I believe that...

Therefore from the rigorous analysis I conducted data analysis for a linear and logical regression tests based upon descriptive statistic portion using the identified dependent and independent variables. Independent Variables: x1= state and/or federal laws and regulations x2= state fireworks stands x3= professional fireworks shows x4= location x5= pricing Dependent Variable: y= sales of fireworks Through the process of creating a fictional data set I did at times try to think of average people ages, and other factors to make it appear more realistic however it was primarily focused on the ethnicity of Native American which is one bias for this fictional data set. However by creating male and female participants and creating varying age ranges I expanded the possible participants and gained a better understanding of the outlook of fireworks sales by using a larger sample than using a single sex, or age group. In doing so, I was able to create tables in excel and SPSS to visually demonstrate the...
