Essay Rough Draft

There has been a lot of negative attention in the media towards video games. Enough that most parents don't want their young children being subjected to the violence and aggression that most video games have. While there are many arguments that oppose video games, they are also many that claim the opposite. In fact, science has proven that video games are actually beneficial to the cognitive development of human beings.

There are many studies that show an enhanced development in children who play video games. In the United States, an astounding 97% of all children play video games for an hour a day. While that may seem counterproductive to their social development, it's actually helping them …show more content…
Problem solving in video games is very common. From online shooter games to harmless puzzle games, it's common to challenge the player. This challenge can be a matter of problem solving or time management. There is always some sort of goal, or end game, to a video game. Regardless of intended age or genre of the game itself. If there wasn't a goal, there wouldn't be a point to the game at all. That being said, video games can even help children become more goal oriented. They can learn how to focus and teach themselves self discipline. They learn to work towards achieving their goal. They try again if they don't accomplish a level the first time, which is teaching them perseverance. These studies show that children who play video games have better attention spans. They also suggest children can multitask …show more content…
In fact, there are too many to try and list. Still, there are negative opinions regarding what video games have to offer. Even after decades of research, the results are inconclusive as to whether or not video games are a negative influence. There have been situations that were easier to face by blaming video games and media sensationalism. The school shooting in Columbine, and the unfortunate ones that followed, all accused video games of brainwashing the children. It's important not to rely solely on the media for opinions regarding this type of subject. The media has always put a negative light on video games and movies. Even music has been "to blame" throughout decades for unexplainable violent acts. But countless other people who play video games have never shown signs of violent or aggressive behavior. In excess, like anything else, video games can be more damaging than rewarding. But it's a matter of understanding the benefits of being an avid video game player. It's important to possess the ability to differentiate from reality and fiction. The children who played video games and then committed crimes are not influenced directly by the game itself. They developed differently, and their cognitive reasoning isn't what it's supposed to be. In fact, it might be because they didn't play enough video games when they were younger. That being said, the scientific studies

Some adults are amazed by how readily young children use computers. Many children find that using computers gives them a sense of power and accomplishment. And, unlike many adults whose first or primary contact with computers is work related, most children first use computers for entertainment purposes and games. This is by no means the only use that children have for computers. Because computer use is promoted in schools, and because computers are so ubiquitous, children have a great deal of exposure to them. In 1972, a new form of entertainment became commercially available with the release of the video game Pong. In Pong, two players tried to "hit" an electronic "ball" back and forth. From these humble beginnings, a revolution in the entertainment industry was born. Interactive game revenues are now significantly greater than the domestic film industry ("Industrial Strengths," 2000). Worldwide video games sales are now at $20 billion annually (Cohen, 2000). The PlayStation video game console, which began as a side project at Sony, now represents $6 billion of the company's $20 billion in annual sales (Cohen, 2000). These virtual worlds can be complicated and perplexing to parents, which is why it's important for you to understand what your child is playing and when to get worried. Parenting

...Families today live in a world saturated by media and technology. The average American child has 3.5 televisions, 3.3 radios, 2.9 VCR/DVD players, 2.1 video game consoles, 1.5 computers, and 3.6 CD or tape players in their home (Pigeron, 2009, p. 1). 84% of children ages 7-17 use the internet in their homes, and 57% have their own cell phones (Kennedy, Smith, Wells, & Wellman, 2008). Media has become intricately woven into the daily lives of families – it acts as a babysitter and teacher, a mediator, entertainer and everyday companion, but perhaps most significantly, it acts as a facilitator of daily family routines, transitions, and interactions. The ubiquity of new technology is quickly changing the means by which families interact with each other to create systems of shared meanings and experiences. Families are adapting to this influx of modern technology and media into their homes by developing new rules and systems of monitoring and regulation. The influence of media on the family life of a second-grade girl, Reagan, and her parents was examined in regards to these changes. In particular, two questions were asked: How do parents perceive and make decisions regarding their children’s use of technology, and how do new forms of technology alter family roles and relationships, particularly those between parent and child? Reagan is the only child of two, married, professional parents. Her media use is typical for children her age, expect that she has just recently...

Argumentative Essay On Screen Time

...Limiters also don’t teach their children about the effects of screens or even how to manage screen time as much as parents who mentor. These parents feel like it is their job to manage screen time, which is partly true, but if all a parent does is limit screen time themselves, the child will never learn how to manage screen time on their own. All in all, limiting screen time is a great way to start a kid into the digital world, but as they get older, kids are more likely to completely go against these rules and find their own...

Agression/Tv Violence

...Shumryia Neal Social Psychology Agression/TV Violence Prof. Zaleski 6/26/14 Television has its good side. It can be entertaining and educational, and can open up new worlds for kids, giving them a chance to travel the globe, learn about different cultures, and gain exposure to ideas that may never encounter in their own community. Shows with a prosocial message can have a positive effect on kids’ behavior; programs with positive role models can influence viewers to make positive lifestyle changes. However, the reverse can also be true: kids are likely to learn things from TV that parents don’t want them to learn. TV can affect kids’ health, behavior and family life in negative ways. The Amount of Violence on Television According to the renowned psychiatrist Karl Menninger, "We not only tolerate violence it is part of our life. Why over one third of our television programs use it for amusement. There are more than 200 million television sets in America. The average American watches over seven hours a day. For many children, this is more time than they spend in school. The world of television has been alternatively called entertainment and a vast wasteland. It serves as a model of the world around us.       What kind of world does it depict? The message is often one of violence. In 1973, the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, devised a "violence profile" to measure the amount of violence shown on television. The analysts watched over...

Advantage and Desadvantage of Media

...Media Literacy Project medialiteracyproject.org Introduction to Media Literacy Media literacy is a set of skills that anyone can learn. Just as literacy is the ability to read and write, media literacy refers to the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media messages of all kinds. These are essential skills in today's world. Today, many people get most of their information through complex combinations of text, images and sounds. We need to be able to navigate this complex media environment, to make sense of the media messages that bombard us every day, and to express ourselves using a variety of media tools and technologies. Media literate youth and adults are better able to decipher the complex messages we receive from television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, signs, packaging, marketing materials, video games, recorded music, the Internet and other forms of media. They can understand how these media messages are constructed, and discover how they create meaning – usually in ways hidden beneath the surface. People who are media literate can also create their own media, becoming active participants in our media culture. Media literacy skills can help children, youth and adults: • Understand how media messages create meaning • Identify who created a particular media message • Recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do • Name the "tools of persuasion" used • Recognize bias, spin, misinformation and lies • Discover the part of the story...

Influence of Home Video on the Young Adults

...integration and development. Major types of film are home video, which develop, until now, from what is formerly known as cinema or stage play/drama. As part of mass media, home videos play the important roles of informing, educating, entertaining and transmitting social heritage. Through their educational role, however, home videos concern themselves with evolving a better society by exposing societal ill and wrongs. Since the emergence of home videos, at the turn of the twenty-first century the films industries, and both male and female actors in Nigeria, Nollywood, have considerably influenced the habits, belief systems, style of dressing and other behavioural idiosyncrasies on many Nigerian youths. Thus, one can say, however, that the emergence of home videos have helped to promote the Nigerian cultural heritage; aside this, it has awaken in many youths the Nigerian culture that was once lost during the colonial period. There are also negative effects of home videos on audiences. However, there have been cases where home videos are criticized to the cause for some societal ills. Social critics, who believes in this school of thought says that some antisocial behaviours like violence and extravagant life that many films portrays in their content perceptibly affect the behavior of the audience. Communications Project

...Media Inequalities Abstract Today as in the past, mass media plays a very significant role in our lives. Individuals get information about people and places they have never actually met or seen. My research explains the media inequalities shared by minorities and media ownership. It also explains the influence a few companies have over the media industry and how minorities make little progress, whether in front of the camera or in influential positions behind it. In addition, much work has been done to bring forward this issue. With the help of special interest groups and other agencies there is a push to bringing diversity into the mainstream media business. Thesis Analysis of the mainstream media reflects inequalities for minorities and women. Of grave concern is the mass media’s negative approach to educating our society through what we perceive is open knowledge in the media, and poor media oversight. The media is undoubtedly important and there is extensive evidence that it both reflects and shapes society and individuals in both positive and negative ways. The issue of control and ownership of the media, and the extent to which this affects society, remain problematic and predominately white male media ownership. According to the article (Media Stereotyping, 2010) “media stereotypes are inevitable, especially in the advertising, entertainment and news industries, which need as wide an audience as possible to quickly understand information.” The passage...
