How Can Kellogg's Do Better in India

...KELLOGS: Kellogg is $13.2 billion multinational food manufacturing company with its headquarters in Michigan, USA. It has manufacturing units in 18 countries and markets its products in over 180 countries. Brand Kellogg’s a global successful player serving packaged breakfast items across globe. Kellogg’s ventured in India in 1994. On its arrival, it created a new category of branded breakfast cereal products. Since then the journey for Kellogg’s has been far from easy, actually it has been so tough that it has found itself to be one of the biggest brand failures in India. In this article let us study what went wrong for the global brand, what mistakes it made and going forward what should be its strategy. Breakfast Cereal Industry: The Industry was pegged at Rs 150 crores way back in 1995 during early days of Kellogg’s. Today, this new category created by Kellogg’s is pegged at Rs 500 crores. Cornflakes account for 80% of the market, rest is shared by Oats, Muesli and Wheat Porridge. Kellogg has 70% market share i.e. 350 crores. The category has grown by only 8.4% per annum over the last 15 years. The figures are testimony to the fact that Kellogg's effort to change the breakfast habit of the Indian people, has not had as much success as it hoped for. Cornflakes for breakfast is somethings we as Indians are not used to and making us leave our idli’s, dosas and parantha’s for cornflakes is tough. However higher growth rates in last 5 years signifies that the change...

...International Markets Bureau MARKET INDICATOR REPORT | JANUARY 2011 Packaged Food Sales In India Packaged Food In India EXECUTIVE SUMMARY With a vast population base, growing middle class and strong macroeconomic growth, India has become one of the fastest-growing markets for packaged food in the world. India’s packaged food retail sales grew an average of 11.5% annually during the past five years, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.93% between 2004 and 2009. While only 30% of the population resides in urban areas, urbanization has become a trend in recent years and has changed how and when consumers eat their meals. This migration of consumers has resulted in new products boasting ethnic and or region-specific flavours, appearing on store shelves. The search for functional food items paired with the desire for instant gratification has caused solid growth in ready-meals, noodles and soup sales. With the growth of modern retailing and the shopping revolution in India, there has been a radical shift in the Indian food industry. In addition, with the arrival of international fast food outlets in India, the food industry has experienced steady growth. It is difficult for most regional packaged food companies in India to expand nationally, due to the country’s underdeveloped infrastructure. Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) was the leader in the packaged food market, with an 8% share in 2009. INSIDE THIS ISSUE Executive Summary...

This case study analyzes the evolution of the NutriChoice brands over the last decade and examines various strategies adopted by Britannia to grow the brand into its present marketleading position. The Journey • Britannia NutriChoice was the first brand to recognize the needs of the fast-emerging segment of health conscious consumers in India and, for the first time, attempted to combine health with taste in the biscuits market. Through this proposition, Britannia NutriChoice attempted to mitigate the myth of healthy food being low on taste and flavor. • Until 2005 the company market-tested a number of product concepts under the NutriChoice umbrella and, in the process, developed a deep understanding of the need states of India's emerging healthconscious population.
