...Influences of Visual Media Paper HUM/176 Professor Craig Bowler There are many forms of visual entertainment readily accessible to us; it has become the primary source of entertainment. Visual entertainment only has not helped shape American culture but also its values. Visual entertainment comes in many forms; whether it is reading a newspaper, magazines, or just watching television. Visual media has many numerous advantages as well as some disadvantages. Advisements are used to target individuals that find their product appealing. This compels viewers to buy the latest technology gadget or to wear the latest fashion clothes. Media has also changed the way we communicate and this has improved our culture in many ways. For example, in the recent years it has been possible to connect on real time with someone across the world through a computer. Now we are able to connect with people through a simple device like the IPhone 4S. The IPhone 4S lets a person talk through face time and allows them to see each other. Visual media has also made a huge impact on young children and teenagers. With all the new artists coming out changing the music and media culture the younger generation is looking up to them more each day. The younger generations view these artists as role models and want to be exactly like them. The music industry has changed media forever. Artists have introduced us to many different cultures...

...Influence of Visual Media Paper By: Marco Contreras There is a strong link, or interrelationship, between culture and visual entertainment media. Visual entertainment media has been used to depict, and to some extent, influence society and culture. Everything we watch on television, film and even digital gaming has influenced us in one way or another. We can easily see an array of examples of these influences. For instance, Marilyn Monroe was considered a huge “sex symbol.” Visual media created this image of her as the “ideal woman,” thus many other women at the time began to imitate her and her style. Another example is the singer and actress Jennifer Lopez. At one point in time, being “anorexic skinny” was what every woman aspired to be. This changed thanks to the exposure of Jennifer Lopez through visual entertainment media. Her “curvy” body became the “ideal” much like Marilyn Monroe was during her time. As such, many women began to change their concept of what is “sexy” or the “ideal woman.” Unfortunately, not all visual entertainment media’s influence on society has been positive. There have been saddening examples, such as the appearance of the television show “Sixteen and Pregnant.” Instead of learning from the show, young teenage girls began to imitate this behavior. Next thing we know, there was a wave of teenage girls getting pregnant across the country. We see all these music video where sex, drugs, and alcohol are glamorized. Kids think that...

...In this paper I will be describing and explaining the interrelationship between culture and the visual entertainment media. I believe that there have been many television shows and movies that have displayed the culture of times in them. People have been influenced by these movies and television shows because some individuals can really relate to the lifestyles or actions of the people in these movies or shows. Especially with videos out there for learning things, I think that can really help with teaching people rather than just trying to get them to read materials to learn. It gives a different view of the materials and what is supposed to be learned. I think that these different forms of visual entertainment media have shaped American culture and its values by influencing people to act differently because of what they see on television or in movies. I believe that celebrities can have a large impact on how people say and do things. For example, Marilyn Monroe was a huge symbol in the past. She was someone who a lot of women admired and tried to be like. I believe that the social influences of the visual entertainment media are mostly positive because it is not always a bad thing to want to better yourself to be like someone in movies or television. Honestly, I think some people can learn a lot from visual media because if they just moved to America or where ever, they can watch movies and television to get an idea of how things are. That is just one example, there are just...

...Neil Postman argues that the form of communication and its delivery determines how individuals feel, think, and react. His book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, discusses how the medium of television and the media in general can change of society’s way of thinking and the general public discourse. The most obvious political detriment of television is that it affects society's ability to form an informed electorate. Television and all forms of media has taught society to judge politicians by their celebrity aspect. This does not allow individuals to consider the important issues and elect politicians who have the best chance of bettering our lives or ensuring our safety (Postman, 1985, p. 95). In Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman writes "You...

One example of a visual art painting is “Pablo Picasso’s Seated Batter,1930.”(Sayne,2010) Introducing an example of Auditory Art would be “Neo-Classical 5 “(celestical-voices.blogspot.com/2010/04/neo-classical-2010.htm/). Introducing an example of Performance Arts is “The John Oats Band” (performing arts.utf.edu/events/2011/the john-oats-band/. ...Thesis Statement The combination of Ethics and Social media is complicated. What people say online is considered their written word. Professionals often struggle with befriending clients or co-workers. Subordinates sometimes feel pressure when their bosses request friendships. The Social Media frenzy has given professionals the opportunity to communicate with clients online but the rules of confidentiality are sometimes vague. Mass media and ethics in today’s society raises many concerns as decisions are made daily involving ethics and such decisions possess the ability to impact the lives of millions of people, whom read, watch, listen, or browse through a media source outlet. To prevent a formal code of ethics from being broken through mass media, in this case-social media, it is important to understand ethical compliance, especially in the workplace. I. Legal and Ethical Issues associated with Social Media A. Privacy Policies 1. Copyright, Piracy and Libel are all issues directly associated with the ethics of social media. Using someone else’s words or speaking negatively about someone in a way that harms their reputation presents a gray area for social media users. 2. Websites are often constructed to defame someone’s character. There is virtually no way to keep people from going live with these sites. Minimal judgments have been issued mandating the removal of defaming information from websites. II. Social Media and Educational Facilities A. Student Confidentiality...

...The Digital World The digital world of today can be understood as a product of late-Victorian construction of the machinery of information organization combined with Modernist visual forms. In his doctoral dissertation, The Engineering of Vision from Constructivism to Computers, Lev Manovich, professor of New Media at the University of San Diego, states it is the influence of Modernist visual forms, mainly Soviet era Constructivism, that shapes the look of the current digital world (e.g. the Internet). Professor Simon Cook of Duke University, in his recent paper, Late Victorian Visual Reasoning and a Modern History of Vision, argues that Manovich overlooks the importance of the Victorian period in influencing the aesthetics of our present digital design. Cook bases his argument on the concept of an orderly and well-catalogued Internet, as if the system had been developed in nineteenth century Britain. However, due to the chaotic, disorganized and ever-changing look of the digital world, the argument of a Victorian based system is flawed. The late nineteenth century does not have the impact Cook believes it does, whereas Manovich remains on track in his original argument. Still, Manovich’s ideas can only be regarded on a temporary basis, because the face of the digital world has changed drastically since its development, and will continue to in the near future. Before exploring the look of the current digital world, it is first important to look at its physical development...

...Carel Bou Maroun Research Paper on Media ENG 203 – Layla Al Kadi Harmouch Introduction: Everywhere you go, you hear people talking about Media. Media is the plural of Medium. But what is a medium? A medium is a mean of mass communication. How can you communicate with a big number of people without what we call a medium, such as newspapers, television, or the Internet for example? Simply, you can’t. Media are elements that help to communicate messages. Any element. In a classroom for example, media are the walls, the board, and even the people inside it. The term mass communications alludes to any type of correspondence that at the same reaches a huge number of people, including yet not constrained to radio, TV, daily papers, magazines, bulletins, movies, record. (Wimmer and Dominick, 1983.) As we all know it, some media are more active and used than others today. For instance, we can think about televisions or mobile phones. But we all know that television is not the first technology used to spread messages. “Media are the result of technology.” (Avery and McCain, 1982.) Day by day, new technologies are emerging and the “old” ones are being forgotten. This is what our modern-day world looks like. It’s constantly changing, moving, evolving… The innovation and models for creating and conveying media substance are always advancing. (Croteau, David, Hoynes, and Milam, 2003.) Media are also socialization agents. You learn...

...DeLynn Downam Professor Tiffany Grovenstein Developmental Psychology 241 February 25, 2016 Are there cognitive benefits for young children in watching baby media? Introduction We live in the period when TV, online videos are used for many different purposes. Various video programs can provide educational purposes, accelerating and facilitating the processes of learning, different movies and TV shows can perform the function of entertainment. And although some video-reportages, films can carry the aggression, violence, etc. in general TV media themselves are not something positive or negative. Whether TV brings benefits or harm to the individual, as I believe, depends more on how the individual will use what television media offers to him/her. In the modern time, not only adults watch different media, but young children are also exposed to watching different TV programs, cartoons, educational movies etc. Parents of young children can use baby media to calm a child, as a safe replacement for other activities, as the background, to distract the attention of the child, etc. Some parents also tend to believe that watching television programs by children is a necessary element of a normal development of a child. However, these assumptions are often baseless and not supported by any facts (Brown, 2011). In early childhood, there is some invisible but intensive development in the brain. The brain of a 5-year-old child in size is almost the same as that of an adult. Brain structures...
